post for 14 October 2002
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
post for 11 October 2002 / season of the crab
What are the official starting dates and ending dates for the season of the crab?
October 1 - November 31.
Can you (or someone else) confirm that it's actually shipped, then?
It doesn't start shipping until the 21st. I'll try to confirm the tournament dates in the meantime, but I might not get immediate results there, since Ray is in Europe until next week.
post for 9 Oct 2002
Recently I'd asked how these tourneys would be sanctioned, but it seems that the new system of scoring doesn't allow more than 1 on 1 games (the system only allowed "who beat who", not "who beat who, who and who"). Any new news on that front, Jeff?
As Dave said, we're working on a way to record multiplayer results.
Solar eclipse Q [Jeff]
Ok, what if I threw a ring into play with that shuggie that lets you do that as a limited action and solar eclipse went off. What would happen? Would the eclpise make the ring "real" for just that turn or from now on?
Real for just the turn.
Would it still have to be shuffled back into my deck after 2 turns?
Yes.
With other words, is the negating of solar eclipse permanent?
No.
Same Q arrises for finding the harmony...
The Ring would also be real just for the current turn.
Overwelmed
How does Overwelmed interact with bowed units. Can you destroy your own bowed personalty? With the card effect, I was told you could I believe you cant.
You can't target your own bowed Personalities with your actions. You can't destroy one of your bowed people to pay the cost if you're playing it, but you can destroy one of your bowed people if someone else plays Overwhelmed against you.
If you can destoy your own bowed personality, do you destroy your personalities as if it were like a ranged attack (actual force) or a bowed unit (0 force). It says personality so it makes me think actual force.
You are correct.
Test of might
If I test of might a bowed unit are they considered 0 force? or their actual force.
Test of Might cares about the Personality's Force. Since it is looking at one individual card's Force, being bowed does not matter. Its actual Force is used.
How does your ruling with overconfidance work with it can you play overconfidance when they strike and when they reveal focus cards to bow them?
Overconfidence must be played when the bonus is gained. Focusing adds to your duelist's stat immediately, not when it's revealed. You have to play Overconfidence when plays a sufficiently high Focus Value -- which means you somehow need to know what it is. You can't react to an unknown bonus and hope it's high enough.
I remember the ruling on to do what we must a bowed unit is considered 0 force for purposes of that card.
That's because To Do What We Must compares total unit Force.
Rules Question: Revering the Past
I need an answer regarding Revering the Past. If you retrieve an Ancestor, but do not have a personality to whom you may attach it, does that Ancestor go to your hand, return to your deck, or go to the discard pile?
From the archive: "Any time a card is retrieved from any deck with instructions to play it immediately, if the card is not playable, it is discarded."
Fall prieviews?
I was wondering when the 30 day countdown for "the Fall" will begin?
Somewhere around the first week of November, roughly.
Quick Ranged attack question (Jeff etc...)
Just in a little argument with a friend about the results of the following situation. An answer would be appreciated.
A ranged 3 attack hits a BOWED personality with force much more than 3 (force is really irrelevant)
Whould the bowed peep hit by the RA die?
No. Bowing does not affect individual card Force.
Hantei the 39th
Hantei the 39th Relevant text:
"... bow Hantei and move him to your home instead of destroying him each time he is destroyed."
Question: What happens if I'm able to put 5 -2C Wasting tokens on him? Does he go to an infinite loop and thus stay bowed?
That's a fair assessment.
Hantei the 39th
Follow up question,
what happens if I managed to cast "Capturing the Soul on him" Does removeing from the game translates as destroyed? Or is he just removed from the game? Does the owner lose the game?
Neither "discarded" nor "removed from the game" count as being destroyed. His controller would not lose if these happen to him.
Fortification Question
If I use taeruko's ability to get a poorly placed garden, can I bow it to gain two honor that turn because its still the limited phase or do I have to wait for my next turn?
You can bow it that turn.
Also does arrows from the woods affect spells like cascading fire. Spells are considered ranged attacks right?
If the Spell says it creates a ranged attack, then, well, it's a ranged attack. If the Spell also doesn't say the attack can't be modified, you can use Arrows From the Woods to increase its strength.
Matsu Hatakai xp question
Q If Hatakai xp is bestowed with the scorp clan trait (most likely oathed), he gains benefit from the yogo towers stronghold. In defense, can he bow a follower/peep with out follower, use ability to straighten, bow a follower/peep with out follower, use ability to straighten, bow a follower/peep with out follower, use ability to straighten etc etc. Is he is this good?
Yes.
another movement question
If hida Sunao is sent home bowed... could I use his ability to discard a card to straighten him
Yes, but not until "after the end of [the] battle". [card text]
and then use oracle of water to move him back into the same battle?
No, because it's over.
Diamond/Broken Strongholds
Okay my question is this. Have the designers actually gone and said we are scrapping the cards? Or is this a rumor by people try to decipher what other people think and then adding they're own twist?
At this point, it's a little of both.
Black Scrolls & Osano-Wo
A Shugenja with Armor of Osano-Wo strapped on cannot be targetted by Black Scroll effects. Let's say this same (non-shadowlands) Shugenja actually has a Black Scroll attached. Since Gold Targeting Rules, it seems that the -1 Chi token gathered when said Shugenja unbows is now an effect targetting the Shugenja, right ? (it doesn't specify it doesn't target, it doesn't apply to its own card, and doesn't affect a whole group of cards) So if I'm reading this right, a Shugenja wearing Black Scrolls & the Armor is immune to the corruption tokens ?
That is correct.
(Jeff) Q about Kaneka's Blockade
It says a player supporting a different wind than you, say the person I'm VSing pulls it and I'm not supporting any wind, what happpens then?
You do NOT count as having a different Wind from his. He may not target you.
Black Scrolls & Kaagi's Journal
If you have a Shugenja with Wasting Disease and Kitsu Kaagi's Journal, does that personality get the -1 Chi tokens when it straightens?
Yes. Gaining a corruption token isn't an action.
2) I lose a battle, and my army consisted of at least one human personality. Is this play legal?
I play A Wish Granted to bring a shugenja into play (keyed off the resolution of the battle). I then use the shugenja to cast The Wind's Truth to steal my opponent's honor gain from winning the battle.
This is still waiting for a Rules Team decision on the exact sequence of events during battle resolution.
