post for 11 October 2002
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
This one goes back about a month and a half. Apparently I transfered it to the wrong subfolder.
Question on Kyoso No Oni exp
Card text reads Unaligned Oni Sovereign Nonhuman Experienced Unique Shadowlands Lose 5 Honor. Kyoso no Oni cannot attach Followers or Items. Open: Destroy one of your Personalities to give Kyoso no Oni +2F/+2C.
Can you destroy bowed personalitys in a resolved battle to give Kyoso the bonus in the current battle?
No, because you can't target your own bowed Personalities with your actions.
If I have a blacksmith in play and 2 iron mine's and my opponent has 2 corrupt iron mine's in play, do the blacksmith's pay 2 gold or 0 gold?
2 (2 + 2 - 2). Or 4 for a Weapon or Armor, since the Weapon/Armor amount is unaffected by either type of Iron Mine.
season of the crab
What are the official starting dates and ending dates for the season of the crab?
October 1 - November 31.
Questions
Now that I have access to local tournaments, I find that there are a number of ratling players around here (about 1/3 of the players seem to prefer ratlings). Being that I haven't played much for a few years, I've forgotten a couple of things that I can't seem to find answers for in my searches.
1) When playing Warrens of the Nezumi, with Ratling Villages, can I get the Ratling Pack token off of the Villages for free with the Warrens reduction.
No. You are not paying the Gold cost of a Follower. You are paying the Gold cost of an action on a Region.
2) Tchik'chuck/Kan'ok'tichek reducing a ratling personality to 0 in my dynasty phase. Do I gain the honour or not?
If you then pay the full cost, which is now 0, you gain the honor.
I seem to remember a ruling that reducing a cost to 0 meant you could not gain the honour, but I don't know if that ruling has been reversed or not.
There was never such a ruling. You might be confusing this with the Ninja Stronghold ruling, which says you don't gain honor if you *waive* a Gold cost.
3) Can a Ratling Nest buy another Ratling Nest?
Yes. The Ratling Nest is a Ratling card by the Keyword Rule.
Obsidian and Jade
I have a clarification questions for Obsidian and Jade. The last sentence reads:
"For the rest of the game, that Personality cannot assign or move into a battle with other Personalities, and other Personalities may not assign or move to a battle with that Personality."
Question 1: If I send one Goblin Wizard to my opponents Fate most province at what point is he considered in the battle? A. As soon as he assigns? B. After the assignment phase? C. Other?
Question 2: My reading of O&J is that it affects everyone's Personalities since it says "other Personalities". Thus your opponent could not assign or move his Personalities to a battle containing the O&B'd Personality. Is this the correct interpretation?
Depending on the answer to Question 1 this could be a very nasty card. Once O&J takes effect if your opponent could not assign Personalities against him or move unit into his battle once he was assigned. I know that is way too strong but the card text is very vague and I think requires some clarification.
Obsidian and Jade works just like the original Hida Yakamo oni. The Personality cannot assign to an army that already contains units, units cannot assign to an army that already contains it, and it cannot assign at the same time as other units. The card has no effect on how units are allowed to assign opposing it.
Rules Question (JEFF)
Hi Jeff, I've been reviewing some rulings from last week and I've got a question on your ruling on A Wish Granted. You stated that you must meet the honour requirement of the personality that you are bringing into play. Is this a card-specific ruling or are you reversing the ruling stating that "Personalities' Honor Requirements need only be met during the Dynasty Phase" which is currently listed in the rules archives?
You know, I looked for that ruling, which I thought I recalled, and I didn't find it. My mistake. You're right, you do NOT need to meet the Personality's Honor Requirement. This is a REVERSAL.
Intelligence Agent - clarification please?
Intelligence Agent Gold 5 - The Intelligence Agent will join a Scorpion player for 2 less Gold. Open: Bow the Intelligence Agent to target another player's Personality, even one that actions normally cannot target. Until the turn ends, you may target the Personality, regardless of card effects.
Hi all- our local Scorpion got a hold of this card and is very excited about the possibilities. I think it can't be as good as he thinks as it is. I just need some clarification on the can + can't of this card. Can Int. Agent allow him to play 3 Shames on 1 guy? Shoot through followers? The possibilities seem endless, really. Opinions?
Intelligence Agent only overrides additional targeting restrictions imposed by cards other than the one the action is on. It will not, for example, let you play Charge on a defending Personality, since the restriction to attackers only is on Charge itself. It will not let you play three Shames on one Personality without re-honoring him and dishonoring him two more times inbetween. It will not let you shoot a Personality who has Followers because that restriction is in the rulebook, not on a card.
ccg Question
Kan'ok'ticheck Unaligned Ratling Chieftain Creature Soul of Tchickchuk Plague tokens do not affect Ratlings. Each other Ratling Personality and Ratling Follower gains +1F while in Kan'ok'ticheck's army. Reaction: When paying for a Ratling, bow Kan'ok'ticheck to lower the Ratling's Gold cost to 0. You may take this action when paying for a Ratling attaching to Kan'ok'ticheck.
-I'd like to clarify this. Can he bow to reduce the gold cost of all ratling cards or just personalities and the specified follower?
All Ratling cards.
Does imperial census have to account for cards like Firebird falls? Or does Firebird Falls considered "activated" during a player's dynasty phase much like the Price of War?
Firebird Falls affects Personalities only while they're entering play. Their costs return to normal once they're bought, and will be affected by Imperial Census more easily.
In relation to Firebird Falls and The Price of War. When a player overlaps an exp personality with an exp 3 personality, does the player have to pay the added gold cost when paying for the difference when overlapping the personality? Or is this an exception?
For Firebird Falls, no, because the Exp3 version is not entering play. (Overlaying does not count as playing a card -- GE p. 36.) For The Price of War, all Personalities cost 2 more Gold, so both the Exp and Exp3 cost more and the difference between them will be the same.
Kolat Bookkeeping Reaction: When a Stronghold bows to produce Gold for bringing a Personality into play and the Stronghold's controller has, face-up in a Province, a Gold-producing Holding for which the Stronghold alone could have paid, the Stronghold produces no Gold.
-Can I react to this when my opponent, on his action phase, has a face-up holding, and plays kolat recruiter using gold on his stronghold to pay for my personality?
Yes.
Kage exp4 Unaligned Kolat Master * Tactician * Exp 4 * Unique Reaction: Whan a human personality is being discarded during a player's dynasty phase, bow Kage and pay the personality's costs. The personality enters play under your control, ignoring honor requirements, and permanently gains the kolat trait
-Does it have to be only my opponent's dynasty phase (or mine for that matter) that I can effectively use kage, or can I, on my dynasty phase use disarmament and then activate Kage to buy my opponent's personality.
Kage can be used during any player's Dynasty Phase.
-If the answer is yes, can I activate Kage when I use Disarmament and the discarded face-down card happens to be a personality? Or is it too late by then? Timing issues.....
You have to use Kage when the card is discarded. If you don't know it's a Personality until it's in the discard pile, it's too late.
Hound of the Lost Oni * Creature* Shadowlands * Lose 1 Honor. Reaction: Bow Hound of the Lost before another card in this army produces Fear targeting exactly one unit. The Fear targets and bows a single follower of your choice in that unit regardless of force, instead of producing its normal effect.
-Can I use fear effect+hound of the lost+the face of fear combo ?
Yes.
Question about Kyuden Hitomi
Hi List,
cards says I can put 5 cards under it at the beginning of the game: Do I select which ones or is it random ?
You select.
Reaction Q
Can a bowed personality react. I think not as it is still an action.
Not if it targets him, no.
My real question is who does Shoshuro Tech target?
Both Personalities.
And can I use it after Kwanchai substitutes another Scorpion in a duel?
Not if he's bowed, no.
And on a related question (due to a recent ruling on copying) can Asako Towers cancle my Shoshuro Tech
Yes.
Rules Question
I was wondering how much turns Baku no Oni had to stay under Forgotten Tomb, 0 or depending on your cards in hand?
How exactly does this work?
Its Force doesn't change until it enters play. It will come out in 0 turns unless there is something giving Force bonuses to Oni still in your deck, like The Spawning Grounds.
Dark Oracle of Air follow up Was: post for 10 Oct 2002
Dark Oracle of Air says that the honor loss from its action cannot be copied or modified. Does modified mean I cannot use The Wind's Truth to redirect the loss?
Yes. Redirecting it is modifying it.
How about Kaukatsu? I'd say no as I lost honor, and he is reacting to create a new honor loss.
Kaukatsu copies the loss, and the Oracle clearly prohibits copying.
Question about Follow the Path
does the personality where the follower is moved to have to be unbowed ?
Not inherently, no, but you cannot use Follow the Path to move Followers onto your own bowed Personality because that would require targeting your own bowed Personality with your action.
