post for 10 Oct 2002

Jeff Alexander, sent 11 October 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Sneak Attack Question [JEFF]

Can a player play more than one Sneak Attack in a battle. I get conflicting reports here.

You can play more than one, but you do not get more than one extra action.

Sepukku Question

Ok, both Golden Obi and Kisada's Shrine trigger off a personality being destroyed. According to the rulebook, a person committing seppuku is being destroyed. Can you trigger off of it and prevent their demise with the Obi and the Shrine?

Yes and yes.

Rules Clarification

I have a question about Overwhelmed. If my opponent plays Overwhelmed against me can I bow Hammanari to cancel the action?

Yes.

If so is the action cancelled before or after my opponent destroys their personality?

After.

Also, can I use the Towers of Asako ability to negate the Overwhelmed?

Towers of the Asako cancels. It doesn't negate. But, yes.

If so does this occur before or after my opponent destroys their personality?

Again, after.

Question for Jeff

Dark Oracle of Air says that the honor loss from its action cannot be copied or modified. Does modified mean I cannot use The Wind's Truth to redirect the loss?

Yes. Redirecting it is modifying it.

The Celestial Pattern

---- The Celestial Pattern: The next event card is negated and is discarded without effect. The negated event is still considered to have occurred. ----

Avoid Fate is played "before an Event begins to resolve." Does Celestial Pattern trump Avoid Fate?

Yes. Celestial Pattern stops Avoid Fate's trigger from occuring.

Unavoidable Destiny

---- Unavoidable Destiny: Until the beginning of your turn two turns from now, Events may not be cancelled, nor their effects negated, by cards or Strongholds. ----

Avoid Fate does not use the word "cancel", despite the fact that it essentially behaves as a cancellation effect. Is Avoid Fate playable while Unavoidable Destiny is in effect?

Technically, it's still playable, but it will do nothing.
