A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
V2002 #701
3) A Wish Granted I seem to recall seeing this asked, but I don't remember seeing the answer. Do you need to meet the honor requirement of the person you bring into play, and do you gain the honor for their PH in play, or do you follow normal honor-gaining rules for bringing people into play?
You are bound by all play restrictions. You do not gain Honor unless you pay full price for someone during your Dynasty Phase.
Text of A Wish Granted: "Reaction: Play after one of your Human Personalities is destroyed by a battle, or another player's card effect to bring a face-up Human Personality in one of your Provinces into play without Gold cost. If the Personality has your Faction trait, gain that Personality's Personal Honor. "
The question is valid, but it's already been answered. Either Jeff or Zen said that you get the extra point from KRS, Yojiro, or similar effects. I don't remember the exact post, but I remember reading this.
Oops, yeah. I'd overlooked the last sentence of A Wish Granted. Sorry for the confusion.
There is an honor gain, but it's not because you're bringing a Personality into play from a Province. It's because of explicit card text.
Humkingbird Tatto Q
Just to check, if the personality with the Hummingbird tatoo straitens he can assign to battles, but not move once he is in them by any players actions.
Right?
Right. Assigning and moving are two different things.
Shinjo Technique
The redirection targets a personality controled by the player who originaly played the action Shinjo tech is reacting to. Right?
So, as the target must be valid, S tech could not redirect a Duel?
Can it target a personality of the reacting player?
Your question is a little hard to read, and I think I answered it with my last post, but just to be sure...
If I redirect one of your actions, I am normally only bound by your action's targeting requirements. Your action is the only one targeting anything. My action is NOT targeting them as well.
Now, Shinjo Technique, by its own text, does apply extra restrictions. When I play it on one of your actions, the new target I pick must be one of your own Personalities AS WELL AS a card you could have targeted originally.
Playing multiple clans
I play multiple clans, but I am having a problem with the rating/ gencon bye's.
It just that in order for me to get standard barrer, hamamoto, or warlord.
I need to focus one one clan for tournament play.
Your ranking within a Faction is based only on games you have played with one of that Faction's decks against one of a different Faction's decks. For instance, your position in the "Top Crane Players" list counts only your games played with a Crane deck against non-Crane decks.
Your overall ELO score is based on all your games, no matter what.
Nogoten's Bow Question...
During a discussion I was asked: "If I use Nogoten's Bow, can I use Tsuruche's arrow to make the negative chi token '-5' instead of '-2' since it is considered a ranged attack and Tsuruche's Arrow adds +3 to a ranged attack?
No. The size of the token's Chi penalty is not the ranged attack strength, and is not modifiable as such. This is in the archives at http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/ .
Solar Eclipse (Jeff)
Does Solar Eclipse remove the "..The ring does not count towards and enlightment victory.." clause from Hoshi Tadao's innate ability?
Yes.
What about Finding the Harmony?
Yes. Kihos produce Spell effects. [GE p. 30] I'm not going to split hairs between "Spell effects" and "effects of Spells".
Not Another Step (ruling needed)
Not Another Step: Reaction: Play before one of your personalities with 3 or greater chi performs a ranged attack. This ranged attack may target a card in an unresolved adjacent battle.
This situation came up recently and opinion is split on it.
I am the defender. The attacker attacks province A with misc. Scorpion personalities - Paneki and Yudoka for the sake of argument. I assign Tsuruchi Hiro and/or Tsuruchi Heishiro (both have high enough chi) to province B - adjacent to the province that is being attacked. I do not assign any defenders to province A. Can I play Not Another Step and shoot into Province A?
Which battle is being resolved? Province A's or B's? If it's B, yes. If it's A... I'll ask the Rules Team. Not Another Step implicitly allows you to expand your target selection without first needing to meet the original requirements, but it does not do that with Presence/Relevance, and in L5R it is generally not legal to start an illegal action and then make it legal with a Reaction unless that Reaction is worded to allow just that.
If I am wrong, I am open to suggestions on how to use this card 'properly'.
It's easier to use on the attack, when you control which battle resolves first.
post for 7 Oct. 2002
You're conflating the terms "action" and "Action card". The definion of "your" you are trying to apply works on cards and tokens only, not to nebulous, non-physical things like actions.
So does that mean that there is a different definition for "your" for actions than for Action cards?
It means there's a different definition of "your" for cards than for other things. "Your turn", "your deck", "your army", "your action"...
If there is a different definition for "your" for actions, could you tell us what it is?
"Your action" means "an action you took". Common sense, really.
PK Rant Repost
One of the factors that has made PK so rampant, in my opinion, is the spilting of the favor into the four winds. Before, the versatility of the favor meant that a player could use it against military, dishonor, or help card drawing - all in the same game. Now a player has to decide what one aspect is the most useful.
Most people have decided that sending home militayr units is the most useful. as evidenced by the amount of people playing Tsudao (see OP stats). The problem then was that there was no good, decent, or reliable way to rehonor dishonored personalities, which are extremely vulnerable to PK in the gold environment.
Recently there have been attempts at fixing the problem - Island Sanctuary in KYOD, Loyal Yojimbo, Shrine of Reverse Fortunes, etc.; But a PK deck should be able to deal with these for the most part.
I, for one, would like to see a reliable way of rehonoring personalities.
By your own admission, there is one: Hantei Naseru. Yes, choosing Naseru means making your deck relatively weaker against military decks, but that is not a matter of dishonor-defense reliability. Naseru is EXACTLY as reliable for restoring live Personalities to honor as the Favor used to be.
Arrow Knows the Way Q
Would Arrow Knows the Way work when the Personality bowing for the Ranged Attack bows Anekkusai's Feathers instead?
If the Personality does not bow, The Arrow Knows the Way cannot be played.
Question about buying Personalities [Jeff]
Hi, I want to know if I have only the gold to buy a personality completly (for example 2 Jade Works for a Hida Rohiteki exp.) can I tell the other player that I don't take the honor?
You always have the option of saying "I'm reducing her Gold cost by 2", which prevents you from gaining Honor.
