post for 30 September 2002

Jeff Alexander, sent 1 October 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Siege trait

Some of the followers in KYOD have the Siege trait, yet I can find nothing about what this trait does, if anything. I am curious as to what this trait does currently (probably nothing) and what it is being contemplated for in the future.

Right now it does nothing except give us an opportunity to do something with that class of cards as a whole in the future.

In Time of War ruling

<< Hey Jeff,

Has the Junta made a choice about this (it was in your September 5th rules post) ? :

<< [Subject = In time of War, and the honor gains being there but not active or something, like the cap on Matsu Domotai's Force] Now since honor gains do not vanish at the end of my turn, during my opponent's turn he use the basic Yogo Tjeki on me for a 2 pt Honor loss. My honor : A) Drops by 2 and goes to 18, or B) Drops by one since I still had one of those magical invisible "excess honor" points and I end up at 19 ?

If the answer is A), where did the excess honor point go, and why did they vanish at the end of my turn ?

Interesting point. I'll see what the Rules Team has to say. In Time of War does, in fact, work like stat maximums do. If you exceed the maximum, your Family Honor becomes that maximum at the end of the turn. Yes, this is a bit of Designer Fiat.

Jeff, Can I add to that please. What if it is a multiplayer game, and the guy who put In time of War into play is removed from the game by province destruction? What happens to the honor gains that happened while In Time of War was in effect?

The exact same things that happen when he's not removed. Eliminating a player does nothing to the duration of effects started by her cards.

Open Rules Question

Do bowed cards have force for purposes other then battle?

Bowed cards contribute less Force to their units' Force totals at all times. [GE p. 55]

The question comes up because of the event Ascension of the Mantis: You must bow more personalities and followers then your opponent has force in play. So if they have bowed personalities, do they count for this total?

No.

To Jeff about Chi Penalties

This came up today in a game and a bet was involved (hehehe, Adam) It regards the duration of Chi Penalities. What happened was: that Person A dueled Person B Person B played a Poison Weapon. Person B lost the duel, but then Kolat Mastered Person A. We want to know if the Chi Penality of Poison Weapon lasts until the end of the duel, or if it's until end of turn.

All effects last until the end of the turn unless a card or rulebook rule says otherwise. [GE p. 39]

1YK0D

i might have missed it if anyone asked but does anyone know if i join imperial assembly now can i order 1ykod? or is it only offered to those who were members when it was released?

You can order it if you just joined.

if i can order are there still sets left to order?

Yes.

More Rules Questions

1.) I have a 2 chi personality. I play nemesis, targeting him and Toritaka Kitao., and I play iaijutsu art, pitting himself against toritaka kitao. Because of nemesis, my peep gets a +2f+3c bonus and enters the duel, right?

Right.

We focus and focuses are revealed and Kitao ends up with a lower chi total. What happens next? Kitao loses and is dishonoured, but is rehonored after the duel? Or is the duel cancelled? Or is his dishonouring cancelled but the duel resolves anyway?

Why would anything be canceled? Kitao's Chi was less than yours at the duel's resolution. He's dishonored, you gain 4. What happens to your Chi after the duel doesn't matter.

Can I play ring of fire after the duel?

Just before you challenged, your Chi was less than his. Yes. [card text]

2.) I have isawa tomo in province A and sorrows path on province B. My opponent attacks province A. I can use tomo to "push" (move) his peep into province B, and then sorrows path destroys his peep right?

If Province A's battle is resolved before Province B's, and Tomo is used in a legal fashion, then yes.

What if, Tomo defends the province that has sorrows path (B), can he "pull" an opposing personality who attacks province (A) into his province?

Tomo is legal to use if you satisfy Presence and Relevance. With Tomo, there are three distinct cases that come up:

* You have no one at all in the current battle. * You have one or more units in the current battle, but the Tomo you're using is somewhere else. * The Tomo you're using is in the current battle.

In Case #1, the only legal use for Tomo is to move one of your own units into the current battle from another one.

In Case #2, you can move a unit belonging to any player between the current battle and one of the other battles, in either direction.

In Case #3, you can move a unit belonging to any player from any battle to any other battle.

Also, a battle resolves at each province, regardless of whether there are attacking and defending peeps, right?

Right. [GE p. 58]

But the attacker determines the order of battle resolution. Given the same situation above, but this time, attacker attacks province A (which tomo is defending) and chooses to have the battle at province B (which has sorrow's path) resolve before the battle at A. I know that Tomo can still push the attacker into province B (even if battle has been resolved) but will sorrow's path still kill his peep?

A Sorrow's Path at Province B will kill attacking cards that are in Province B during Province B's resolution. The order the battles are resolved in doesn't matter (though it can sometimes affect how difficult it is to move units into Province B in time).

If tomo moves an opposing personality to a province whose battle has already resolved, and the opposing personality's force is still enough to break the province, does the province break?

Each battle is only resolved once. Units moved into a resolved battle won't destroy anything -- not the Province, not each other.

And can I play slaughter the scout on a personality that's been moved by tomo (assuming I have an unbowed peep in the province to which the opposing unit has been moved)

Yes.

3. Can I play dark lord's favour if my opponent and I have the same honor? (do I not technically still have the lowest honor, even if I'm tied with someone else?)

Yes. [archive]

2 Questions involving KYD (Someone official please?)

Firstly - Tsukune. Holy cow. OK, it says Exp2KYD, and specifically says non-unique. So how many Tsukune's can you legally have in play, assuming you're playing Open? There is the standard one, exp1, exp2, exp3, and now the non unique exp2KYD. Is the EXP2KYD considered separate from the standard nonEXP one, which would mean you could have 7, or not, meaning you could have 4. This is hurting my brain :)

Seven. (Eight with the Egg of Pan Ku.) You may have one of her Exp2 version and three of her Exp2-KYD version in your deck.

Open Format Multiplayer Question

In an Open Format Multiplayer, can a Shiro Matsu player use Plans within Plans, his stronghold ability and Delicate Calculations during another player's limited Actions phase?

Yes. Keep in mind that Delicate Calculations does not create an attack -- it changes the rules that govern how the attacks you do make can be directed.

Bayushi Yoj ?

Was Bayushi Yojirro experienced errattad like the ki-rin shrine experienced?

The Shrine did not receive errata. The rules of the game changed so you gain honor before effects like these start applying.

Bayushi Yoj ?

Where can I find this ruling... I'm a TO for a tounament and I'd like to have this on hand.

Question about Clan Champion and Faith in my Clan(JEFF)

The card text for the KYOD toturi says Lion Clan Champion, Toturi's Army. For Faith in my Clan reason is he also the Clan Champion for Toturi's Army?

Yes.

Random Question

I was wondering if creature and nonhuman are interchangable traits. I can't seem to find anything thats indicative either way, except for the common sense fact that if its not stated as interchangable, theyre not...

A Creature is automatically also Nonhuman. [GE p. 34] The opposite is NOT true.

Timing question for Jeff

I have a question about the timing of destruction and honour gains during a battle resolution.

We had this come up during a casual session:

A: During a battle one player has a couple dishonoured peeps. At battle resolution the two armies are tied.

And this one came up during Season of the Dragon.

B: One player loses a battle. He has a shugenja with the Celestial Sword attached outside of the battle. His Chi is high enough to take the honour gains from the battle with a Wind's Truth if you include the peeps in the battle that are being destroyed.

So, the question is, what comes first, personality destruction or honour gains?

If Personality Destruction is first then for each of the above:

A: The player loses honour for his dishonoured peeps then he gains one honour for each of the destroyed cards in the other army.

B: He can't take the honour gain as his Chi is too low.

If the honour gain is first or if they are simultaneous:

A: The dishonoured peeps are rehonored and the player gains and loses nothing.

B: The shugenja can use Wind's Truth to take the honour gain.

I "ruled" on the first one that the peeps were rehonored and no honour was gained or lost. Then at the tournament it was ruled that the shugenja can not redirect the honour gain. Since these two rulings contradict each other I thought I had better check.

There is no gain to steal. "Dishonored Personalities cannot bring Honor to their family, including through battles and duels." [GE p. 60]

Furthermore, according to page 61, if Dishonored Personalities die and gain honor at the same time, they are restored to honor first. There is no loss due to dishonorable death either in this case.

Does that address all your issues?

Parasitic Oni Question

Parasitic Oni +2F +2C 0HR 3G -PH Oni * Nonhuman * Shadowlands Lose 2 Honor. Destroy this Personality if Parasitic Oni is destroyed. "Yori is not the most powerful of the Dark Masters, but he is certainly the most creative" - Hantei the 39th 2F Diamond, Gold Legal

- My question is, if this follower gives it's force directly to the Personality, can it be destroyed by a ranged attack?

Sure. It's a Follower, isn't it?

- If so, what strength ranged attack?

2, since the Oni's Force is 2.

post for 26 September 2002 + dueling questions

Dueling Questions:

1.Player A focus "another time" during a duel against player B, when both players reveal their cards, Player B plays poisoned weapon. My question is, does poisoned weapon resolves?

Player B can't play Poisoned Weapon. By card text, Poisoned Weapon is played AFTER focuses are revealed, but Another Time ends the duel WHEN focuses are revealed.

2. Player A duels Tamori Shaitung exp. of player B, Shaitung Calls a strike and player A plays 2 poisoned weapon and plays one wind´s truth to redirect the first lose of poisoned weapon to his opponent, player B reacts with shaitung to cancel the action. My question is, shaitung could do this beacuse she is still alive after the poisoned weapon? Shaitung is dead, se can´t use his reaction? something whent really wrong with the order of the reactions?

Player A has to play one Poisoned Weapon at a time. If he's Wind's Truth-ing the loss from the first one, Shaitung is clearly still alive (5 Chi to start + focuses - 3 from PW > 0). He could, however, redirect the loss from the second PW instead. Shaitung will be dead then if she focused less than 2 points during the duel.

By the way, everyone would appreciate it if you trimmed any unnecessary lines when you quote a long email. Thanks.

solitary engagement

TypeAction TitleSolitary Engagement Rarity/EditionU Broken Blades TextBattle: Send home one of your units and one opposing unit. Your Personality challenges the other Personality to a duel. Focus2

Player A is playing Scorpion/Yogo against player B, player A attacks players B province with one unit, and player B defends with one. Player A plays sneak attack and bows player b personality, Can player B use solitary engagement to remove his personality and his opponent personality from battle?

Solitary Engagement targets both units. Targeting a unit also targets its Personality (and vice versa). You cannot target your own bowed Personalities with your actions. You cannot play a targeted action if you can't pick a legal target for it.

In short: no.

Can you remove one of your bowed personalities with solitary engamente if there are more unbowed personalities in a batlle? can you use solitary engagement if you only have bowed personalities in a battle?

No and no.

Ok I see a problem with the Sanctioning of events...

Looking at the list its not looking quite right.

The system has been up since Aug 1 and someone has over 100 matches already at 88w/22l?

What the hell is that all about?

How is the system suppose to work?

Looking at the scorpion clan rankings.. the #4 is 15/24 yet the #5 guys (tied) are 13-11.

That does not make sense. Why is someone who has won .625 of their games higher ranked than .846?

Ryan Dancey would be a better choice to address this (are you listening, Ryan?), but in a nutshell, Organized Play ranks players using the ELO system. Under this system, the rankings of the opponents you win and lose against are as important as winning and losing itself. Beating highly-ranked opponents a few times is worth more than several victories against neophytes or known poor players.

I also think the number of events you can be in should be 1 per day 3 per week max or something like that. A great majority of us are working adults, yet if I owned a store and had events every night that I played in, I could rack up the points too. How is that fair to everyone else? Does that mean I need to go out a buy my own card/comic store so I can compete?

The ELO system takes that into account. You can't artificially inflate your score by playing the same people over and over again. As you beat them, their ratings go down, which means you get fewer and fewer additional points every time.

Dark Ring of Fire question

Just a silly question...if my opponent focuses a 1 while the Dark Ring of Fire is in play for me, is their focus now 0 or -1?

0. Stats other than Family Honor and Honor Requirements can't go below 0. [GE p. 31]

Question for Jeff A.

Lesser shrine question If I have a LS in play and one of my peeps is targeted with an I. challenge, then I refuse the challenge and commit seppuku, are my LS'S destroyed?

Refusing an Iaijutsu Challenge is not "taking an action". It will not destroy your Lesser Shrines.

Question for Jeff A.

Doji Jotaro Political Battle: Bow to dishonor a human personality attacking one of your provinces.

Does Jotaro have to be at the battle to take this action or do I simply have to have presence?

Just satisfy Presence and Relevance -- you must have a unit there (any unit, not necessarily Jotaro), and either Jotaro or the target have to be in the current battle.
