Jeff Alexander, sent 11 September 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Does this also mean that personalities who enter play dishonored still have their personal honor get added to the total.

No. That ruling is not going to change.

Can I ask the reasoning behind this? My understanding is that "enters play dishonored" personalities are not dishonored while in the Dynasty deck or provinces, which is where they appear to be now when their personal honor is added.

Long story short: we're trying to change as little as possible. We don't want this new rule to impact other rulings, and *thought* we'd arranged it so it didn't. I'll see what the Rules Team wants to do with this one, but I'll state right now that our preference is that the "enter play dishonored" ruling doesn't change.

definitions in rules

Katsu and all shadowlands personalities in B.B. does'n have the unaligned trait. Does this means that you build the shadowlands clan trait?? How can this be useful for shadowlands or other clan players (Having the unaligned trait or not, having the shadowlands clan trait or not)???????????

We are trying to use the term "Unaligned" intuitively these days, reserving it for Personalities who are truly not affiliated with any of the game's recognized Factions. Yes, "Shadowlands" is not treated as a faction trait, but back at the intuitive level, that's splitting hairs. Players (understandibly) THINK of Shadowlands Personalities as belonging to that Faction, so its presence will also make a card ineligible for the Unaligned trait.

Deck reprint question

I'd like to know, was Careful Planning reprinted on a Spirit Wars starter?

No.

Fields of the Morning sun

What is the card text on "Fields of The Morning Sun"? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

"No player may assign or move any Personality with over 2 Personal Honor to battle at this Province."

GenCon Top 8 -- More information

Think of this table as answering the question, "What are my chances of making it into Worlds if I play Clan X?"

[KAI] Well, looking at the Ratling Statistic seems to throw this right theory out the window.

A more appropriate response is to assign the Ratling statistic much lower confidence due to the small sampling.

Which successful decks require the least and the most risk and judgment-calls? Which decks are so steeped in innate economic, mechanical, and statistical strengths that they are closest to "robot" decks?

The ones that interact least with their opponent, winning by Honor via gains that come exclusively from their own cards. And, you know, SOME clan is always going to be best at this. It's inescapable. And you know what else? I don't mind that there are some factions and deck styles in the game that are easier for new players to win with, and some that take the expert players farther.

A few Questions

1) If I target a bowed personality with Shousuro technique, do I gain the personalities force or do I gain nothing because he is bowed?

Shosuro Technique cares about the Force of an individual card, so being bowed will not change the value it copies. Bowing affects unit totals, not card stats.

2) If I'm loosing honor for whatever reason, and I bow Bayushi Kaukatsu to share it with my opponent, can I then The Wind's Truth the loss I recieved to him as well?

No. Wind's Truth is played "when" the loss happens. Kaukatsu is used "after". Wind's Truth must be played first, and if it is, you no longer suffer a loss that Kaukatsu can react to.

Kaukatsu's original version, Bayushi Goshiu, was deliberately worded in this way to render it impossible to "have your cake and eat it too" -- if you want to duplicate a loss, you have to actually suffer it yourself. This one card, printed way back in the Shadowlands expansion, is the primary reason that Reaction timing conflicts are resolved first by exact card text, THEN in some sort of turn order.

A few Rules Q's (jeff?)

Hi!

A few rules q's that came up while playing a lion:

Can Shriryo no Taisa Cancel a fall on your knees? (Lion attacks, plays sneak, I play fall, he cancels fall?) In other words, can Shiryo no Taisa cancel reactions that the defender takes before his normal first action?

Yes. Any time you see "before the Defender's first action", read it as "before the Defender's first normal chance to take a Battle or Open action".

And can a peep with a snow crane use it when another peep is in a duel?

Yes.

And can you use Snow Cranes reaction while the peep carrying it is bowed?

No, because the ability is on the Personality.

Can you send your own attacking unit home when it is bowed? (with favor or Blocked SL) Once again, I guess not...

You cannot target your own bowed Personalities with your actions, so you can't send them home with cards that target Personalities or units. And that's the only reason -- there is no rule that attackers can't ever send home their own people.

Shame Bait?

Of course, if this ruling has since been withdrawn, and you can no longer use Defend on your opponent's Challenges, please tell me so I can take them out of my deck.

The ruling has not changed. Defend Your Honor still cares about whose action caused the loss, and the action causing the loss here is Iaijutsu Challenge, which your opponent played.

What all does A Test of Courage cancel, 1.one personality from being sent home(one who plays it), 2.both from being sent home, 3.cancel the entire action.

"Cancel the action." [card text] 3.

Clarification, Jeff (was Re: [L5R-CCG] From the Rules Sheet)

KRS and Yojiro no longer give their PH bonuses fast enough for a player to gain extra honor from their entering play by paying full price. Correct?

Starting August 19th, that is correct.

post for 14 August 2002

This means that We Will Have Revenge can cancel an honor loss caused by an opponent's Deeds and simultaneously allow you to ambush one of their personalities, am I reading that right? Sick.

That is not correct. Deeds, Not Words changes gains into losses but does not change any other aspect of the honor adjustment, including the source. The source of the loss remains whatever the source of the gain would have been.
