post for 11-12 September 2002
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Go Master/Oracle of Earth + Accessible Terrain
A card such as Go Master or Oracle of Earth may NOT be used to play a Terrain if you have no units in the current battle, even if the Terrain is one that can be played directly in such an instance.
Rules question
Maybe some one can help me with this....
The scenario is I'm attacking with hida kosho and a dai suchi. I beat the player in prov A. Can I play a sup tac after i play rally cry to move kosho into prov B? I've seen it done with hida sunao and accessable terrain.
No. Superior Tactics moves a unit from one Province into another. Accessible Terrain moves a unit into a Province from anywhere. If you're the Attacker or an ally, your units go back home after every battle. Only the Defender's units stay at the Province.
Facing Your Devils Q
A shugenja receives a chi bonus from Blessed Dojo or Doji Akiko before casting Facing Your Devils, the challenged controller accepts the duel. My question is how high is the chi of the caster for the purposes of the duel - his printed value or does it include the chi bonus form BD or Akiko.
The duel is an effect of the kiho, so any Chi bonuses the caster gets for kihos lasts for the entire duel.
Better understanding needed on Asako Towers vs Fall on your knees. / Another Asako Tower Question...
On Sept. 9th Jeff Alexander answered this question:
... Which I'm sure has been asked and answered many times before. If I use Fall On Your Knees to prevent a Shugenja using the Stronghold's reactions, can my opponent merely react again with another Shugenja?
Yes. ------------------------------------------------------- On page 48 of the Dark Allies rulebook under Reactions it states:"Also, each printed instance of a Reaction can be used only once per trigger.(It's legal to use multiple identical Reactions if they all come from different physical cards.)"
Now if each of your Phoenix Shugenja are considered to gain the strongholds Reaction to cancel an action targeting a samurai, (the way Yogo Towers works for Scorpion), then I understand why Jeff answered yes to this question. However, it is my understanding that bowing a Shugenja is a cost of using the strongholds reaction and that the source of the actual Reaction comes from the stronghold itself, which would count as only one printed instance. If that is correct then an Asako Towers player should not be able to react again with a different Shugenja.Could Jeff or some other rules guru please give me a better understanding on this issue.
As has been pointed out, a canceled action is not considered to have been used, so attempting it with another Shugenja does not violate the once-per-written-instance limit.
Rules Question
The foo rule is it gone some guys at my local store say that they abolished the foo rule but I haven't found anything to say that they have and those guys at my store are idoits
It has not been abolished. It's called the Keyword Rule now, and it's in the rulebook on pages 33-34.
City of Gold
Can you use city of gold to like this - bow jade works as a reaction bow city of gold purchase 2 large farms?
No. You buy one thing at a time in L5R.
Costs vs Effects (Frenzy) [Jeff]
Quick question which came up in a game. Exactly which results of playing a Frenzy are costs and which are effects? The Gold wording is unclear, as the Force bonus, dishonouring, destruction of Followers, and honour loss are all separate sentances.
The card is clear. None of those sentences say "Do X *to* do Y" or "Do X as a cost", so everything the card does is an effect.
If I play Frenzy on an opposing unit, and the other player counters it by slapping down Superior Strategist, exactly what has he cancelled, and what are the costs that remain paid?
You still lose the card and you still have to pay its 0 gold cost, but nothing else happens.
rule question
Can asako towers cancel an action that is targeting one of their bowed personalities?
Yes.
if so does this mean, I can use flee the darkness or faith in my clan, to cancels actions that target my personalities?
Yes. Neither of these target anything but the action they're canceling.
Rules question
I don't mean to be a pest but I thought I'd repost my question since I haven't received a reply in days.
I answered these in my September 9th post, actually.
1. I have Isawa Suma with an emerald armor. Casting spells will not reduce his chi to below one right?
Right.
What if I have suma with the emerald armor, and my opponent dishonors him and then plays force of will on him to switch his chi and personal honor, does he die? If he does not die, what is his chi?
The Emerald Armor sets his minimum Chi to 1. Minimums are always applied last. [p. 31] Force of Will will try to set it to 0, but it will then rise to the minumum and he'll live.
2. I have a personality with three chi who is challenged to a duel by an opposing personality. My personality focuses, say a four, and the opponent strikes then plays poisoned weapon. What happens next?
Your Personality's total Chi was 7 as soon as you focused. Focusing adds immediately. [GE p. 61] Then Poisoned Weapon reduced your Chi to 4.
Now you resolve the duel. If your opponent's total Chi is 5 or more, you lose the duel and die, and he wins. If his Chi is 4, it's a tie and you both lose and die. If his Chi is 3 or less, you win the duel. Then your bonus from focusing disappears, but not the penalty from Poisoned Weapon, since that lasts all turn. You have only 0 Chi now (3 - 3) and die.
Some Questions
The ruling has not changed. Defend Your Honor still cares about whose action caused the loss, and the action causing the loss here is Iaijutsu Challenge, which your opponent played.
In this case would this also cancel your personality from becoming dishonored?
No. Defend Your Honor negates the Honor loss. That's it.
When you cast Secrets on the Wind: When this Spell enters play, it gains a number of tokens equal to this Shugenja's Chi. Elemental Limited: Bow this Shugenja and destroy a token on this Spell to dishonor a Personality. A Scorpion Clan Shugenja need not destroy a token to take this action.
If the spell is canceled do I still have to destroy a token?
Your answer is on the card. "Bow this Shugenja and destroy a token on this Spell to .... " Everything before the "to" is a cost. Costs are not refunded when an action is canceled.
Also with any spell that must be destroyed when cast, if it is canceled is it still destroyed?
By general ruling, the destruction is a cost for all Spells that destroy themselves when cast. So, yes.
"we will have revenge" question
I'd like to be sure of what that card can do.
Can you use "we will have revenge" in reaction to the refusal of a ijajutsu challenge?
i'm not sure if the 7 honor loss is part of my opponent action.
The 7 pt loss is from A) the challenging player's card, B) the challenging player's action, and C) the CHALLENGED player's decision. What you do next is read We Will Have Revenge and see which of these it cares about. WWHR says "Play after losing Honor due to another player's action." That's B). It can be played against a refused Iaijutsu Challenge.
question
If I ambush otomo disichi, do I destroy my opponents province.
Yes. It is Dsichi's trait that's destroying the Province, not the battle's outcome.
And if I use, we will have revenge?
The answer is the same.
scout question
Can I use a scout to play a terrain under armor of sun tao?
Yes.
