A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A few easy questions

We have a relatively new play group and the question came up if you could attach multiple copies of the same item (non-weapon, non-armor, non-unique) to a personality.

You may.

Also, does the event Traveling Merchants remain in your province until the tokens are gone or do you refill as you normally would and just keep the events effects going.

Refill the Province normally right after it resolves. Keep the Event in play in your home region while it has tokens.

More Face Me Questions

He does not die instantly; his chi is not 0, in fact is hasn't changed. however, he WILL probably die when you say strike.

His personal honor is 0. naginata does not change personal honor. The duel compares PH instead of chi; it does not, in any way, swith chi and PH. you start out ahead by 3 (your PH compared to his)

Are you reading a poorly-translated foreign version of the card? My copy says "Replace [both duelists'] Chi with their Personal Honor until the duel ends."

This happens when Face Me! is played. Anyone with 0 Personal Honor dies instantly, when their Chi is set to the same value.

Ruling Question

I had a question about the Experienced Hataki's ability. Lets say my opponent attacks province 1 and 2 and I'm defending at province 1 with Hataki who has a Jade Bow attached. Say I kill his personality with the jade bow, the battle ends and Hataki goes home bowed (because of the bow). Now the battle at province 2 starts. Can I straighten Hataki and move him into the battle?

Yes.

Or do I need to have a personality already at that battle?

You need to satisfy Presence and Relevance. Bringing any unit into the current battle satisfies Relevance. Bringing one of your own in satisfies Presence as well.

Last Wish Question

When you use Isawa's Last Wish, can your opponent destroy the Last Wish or its personality?

Your opponent can destroy any one card you control. That includes your Wind. He, unlike you, is not limited to destroying only cards in the battle.

ide sadanobu

How does his reaction works? When?

Can I, for example, buy him with the stronghold and then use his reaction?

You bow him after you bow your Stronghold to pay for a Unicorn Clan Personality. [card text] His Gold can only be spent on the Personality that the Stronghold is helping to buy.

Armor of Mountains

Question for the List: What happens when a Tactician with the Armor of the Mountains tries to use Luring Tactics? Is the action cancelled? Is the movement of your guy negated, but the other guy still moves? Can you just not use it at all? Inquiring minds want to know.

Your movement is negated, but the other unit's is not.

Yasuki J-K

Can the new crab courtier yasuki j-k target and affect other copies of himself while in still in the province? ie can he target a copy of himself while in province A to increase his PH to 5 and then buy him for a 5 honor gain

No. You normally cannot target cards not yet in play [p. 46], AND you normally cannot use actions on cards not in play or in your hand.

Overwhelmed...

One of my local players has brought up a solid point on Overwhelmed. Card Text:

Battle: Destroy your Personality in this battle with the highest force. (In the case of a tie, choose one) The Opposing player chooses either to destroy one Personality with the highest force in his or her army or send two units in his or her army home without bowing.

Now, from the Dark Allies rulebook, page 43, on costs:

Many costs appear in action text. You pay an action's costs, then its effects happen. For sets starting with Fire and Shadow, only something described as a cost or something followed by "to" or "for" are costs.

So, destroying your own personality is an effect, not a cost, which targets. Thus, the following:

1. If you have no personality in the battle (but do have a garrison, or some such) you can still play Overwhelmed and send opposing units home or force a destruction.

2. If your only personalities in the battle are bowed, you cannot target them with Overwhelmed, but the other effects (destruction or send home of opposing units)still happens.

Now, to me, the card seems to imply the first effect is a cost of the second effect, but we all know how those implied things work, they usually don't.

This really needs to be addressed, and in a hurry, because I thought this card was overpowered if the first effect were a cost, without it being a cost, I think it borders on broken.

While it was supposed to be a cost, I'm not sure there's a problem. You cannot take a targeted action if you cannot pick all the targets you need to. If you can't target a real Personality controlled by you in that battle, you can't play Overwhelmed. And it doesn't combo with Garrison. Garrison gives you a unit there "for taking actions during battle" -- i.e., for the Rule of Presence -- only.

rules question

Muchitsujo - Reaction: Bow before another player attaches a card from his or her hand to one of his or her Personalities to redirect the attachment to another legal target.

I see people saying that he's a built in Ninja Thief, but if it needs to be another "legal" target, that would exclude Muchitsujo's controler's people right?

Right. It has to be someone else that player could have tried attaching that card to in the first place.

L5R-CCG-Digest V2002 #626

1. I have Isawa Suma with an emerald armor. Casting spells will not reduce his chi to below one right?

Right.

What if I have suma with the emerald armor, and my opponent dishonors him and then plays force of will on him to switch his chi and personal honor, does he die? If he does not die, what is his chi?

The Emerald Armor sets his minimum Chi to 1. Minimums are always applied last. [p. 31] Force of Will will try to set it to 0, but it will then rise to the minumum and he'll live.

2. I have a personality with three chi who is challenged to a duel by an opposing personality. My personality focuses, say a four, and the opponent strikes then plays poisoned weapon. What happens next?

Your Personality's total Chi was 7 as soon as you focused. Focusing adds immediately. [GE p. 61] Then Poisoned Weapon reduced your Chi to 4.

Now you resolve the duel. If your opponent's total Chi is 5 or more, you lose the duel and die, and he wins. If his Chi is 4, it's a tie and you both lose and die. If his Chi is 3 or less, you win the duel. Then your bonus from focusing disappears, but not the penalty from Poisoned Weapon, since that lasts all turn. You have only 0 Chi now (3 - 3) and die.

Another Asako Tower Question...

... Which I'm sure has been asked and answered many times before. If I use Fall On Your Knees to prevent a Shugenja using the Stronghold's reactions, can my opponent merely react again with another Shugenja?

Yes.

Overwhelmed...

Another question is, if the only unit they have is bowed they cannot choose that one correct? Just want to verify.

A player is only prohibited from targeting his own bowed Personalities with his own actions. He can choose them as targets when required to by someone else's action, like Overwhelmed.

Rules Questions (The company you keep)

We where playing last night with my friends and a question arrived to us, now that you gain honor before the personality comes into play (Broken Blades RS), how does the company you keep work?.

The dishonoring happens before the honor gain, by direct card text. Paying full price will generate a 0-pt honor gain, which will not restore the Personality to honor.

On the other hand, Can I play Resist Magic to cancel a Purity of the Seven thunders?

Purity of the Seven Thunders is a global effect, since it destroys "all Shadowlands cards in play". By targeting rule #3, it does not target. No.

Thousand Years of Darkness question

is there someone i can email or call to confirm that i've got my order in for Thousand Years of Darkness. i placed it when the herald first advertised it but just want to be sure my order is still there.

(909) 390-5444. Ask for Dave Lepore or Estela Samaniego.

Imperial Census Question

Does Imperial Census cause Shinjo Osema to bow when he is in play for an Utaku Palaces player?

Yes.

Imperial Census Question

And as a sub-question: do 7 gold personalities bow for a Yasuki Palaces player?

Yes. The Palaces have a Gold Production stat of 5. Imperial Census doesn't care about the modifying clause.
