Jeff Alexander, sent 28 August 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

AEG Payment methods

Can someone of the AEG please tell me if I can pay AEG by paypal?

No, you can't. We don't have an account, and besides, we do not offer Season Of... kits for direct sale to consumers.

Clan Letter Passwrods

I was going to reread my most recent clan letter, but appears the passwords have changed...

What gives?

I've forwarded this issue to our webmaster.

Does that mean that 1KYoD will only become tournament legal 30 days after the next retail set (The Fall of Mujina Villiage) is officially released (just like the Herald Promos)?

1,000 Years of Darkness becomes legal in tournaments on November 1st.

Shiba Yoma question

Reading this tells us that a kiho which was canceled was never attempted in the first place. So Yoma gets NO bonus.

However, if you read the 4th paragraph on the same page: "If a card or action is canceled after it has already produced some effects, do not undo those effects."

Yoma does get to keep his bonus.

Sorry. This rule is irrelevant. Yoma's bonus is not an effect of the kiho.

rules query.

Here's one that I'm pretty sure has been answered before, but I couldn't find it, so here goes:

Relevant card text:

Faith in My Clan: You may play this card only if a Clan Champion from your Faction is in your army.

Reaction: Cancel an Action

Kuni Utagu Exp Crab Clan Jade Champion

So, does Utagu meet the requirement for Faith In My Clan?

No. A Personality is only a Clan Champion if it has the "Clan Champion" or "XXX Clan Champion" traits together.

post for 26 August 2002 / Lesser Shrine and Deeds

Does a honor loss caused by your Deeds not Words pop a Lesser Shrine?

If it came from one of your actions (like bowing a Kabuki Theater Troupe for 1 Honor), yes. Buying a Personality at full price will not destroy it because that's not an action.

Just to be picky you cannot play Deeds Not Words on yourself (card text)

Correct. You can't. I had missed the subtle inclusion of the word "your" in the original question, which seems to be throwing other list members into confusion.

The basic point was that Deeds, Not Words is not the source of any losses suffered during its effect that would normally have been gains. The source remains unchanged, so only if you take an honor- gaining action would your own Lesser Shrines be destroyed.

1. Hida sakamoto. He gives all samurai in his army a +1 yu bonus. Does that mean that after the personalities that have been in an army with him and had the yu bonus now perminantly have 0 yu when not in an army with him.

Yes.

can this yu be used with kisada's shrine.

Yes.

So... any personalities who have spent time in an army with Hida Sakamoto can be brought back from the dead by Kisada's Shrine?

I'm pretty sure that's what I just said, but, yes.

post for 26 August 2002 (Deeds and Shrine)

Let me rephrase the original question, then: Will the honor loss created caused to your opponent by your Deeds not Words pop your own Lesser shrine?

No. Read Lesser Shrine. To kill it, you need to take an action that causes yourself a loss.

Badge of Purity/ Drain the Soul

If a shugenja has both the Badge of Purity and Drain the Soul attached, if the shugenja casts the spell and then bows the badge to negate the chi loss caused by the spell, is the ENTIRE effect of the spell negated, or only the chi loss?

Only the Chi loss.

Reaction question

This came up in a game.

I was wondering if a Diplomatic Apprentice attached to a Nagori could bow to use Nagori's effect, and then the Nagori could bow himself to use it a second time. I didn't see it in the archive about it, and the rules book didn't disallow multiple reactions.

The rules do disallow multiple uses of the same printed Reaction, on page 48. Bowing the Apprentice instead of Nagori does not change the fact that it's Nagori's Reaction being used, and each individual Nagori's Reaction can only be used once per loss/gain.

No One Wins

No One Wins Polictical Reaction: Play during battle resolution to prevent all honor gains from destroying cards during this battle's resolution.

How does this work? a: I win the battle and refuse to take any honor gains and destroy the cards. b: I win the battle and have no choice but to take the honor gain and the cards are not destroyed

a), mostly. It's not so much that you refuse to take the gain as that there isn't one to begin with. No One Wins merely negates the two point honor gain per card destroyed awarded to the winner, or the one point per card awarded to each opponent in a tie. I don't know why so many people read it as giving players a choice between gaining honor or destroying cards -- the wording doesn't seem in any way ambiguous to me.
