A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
rule questions (Jeff, zen, ect)
1. Hida sakamoto. He gives all samurai in his army a +1 yu bonus. Does that mean that after the personalities that have been in an army with him and had the yu bonus now perminantly have 0 yu when not in an army with him.
Yes.
can this yu be used with kisada's shrine.
Yes.
2. Is anvil of dispair/ kisada's shrine / kaiu forge. is this a respectable combo for huge weapons, when combied with a yu personality?
Yes.
3. will a person welding a tachi be able to recieve a bonus from burning blade because it gives the bonus to the weapon not the personalty?
Yes.
4. is it a coincidence that wolf's proposal and maho bujin work well together?
Yes.
5. seductive kansen, can we get a clarification on how this card works
If the focus of the drawn card is 3 or less, nothing happens. If the focus is 4 or more, the shugenja dies if he's Shadowlands and permanelty becomes Shadowlands if he isn't.
6. The Dark Daughter's Caress do monks or courtiers or hida osano'wo's? who casts a kiho or spell efect gain the shadowlands trait?
No. Only Shugenja.
can this combo well with 'for the empire'?
Sure, if your opponent plays with Samurai Personalities.
will a deck that runs this event and no shadowlands or maho card be considered tainted?
Probably not.
7.Entrenchment
can personalities be sent home at a battle where entrenchment is. what happens if a player gets blocked supplylined or refuged at such a battle? would they bow and stay in battle?
They would not bow. A unit which is sent home bowed does not bow if it does not go home.
and if so, can I move them with hida advisors and have them gain a perminant 0 yu?
Yes.
9.hida Tokichiro
can he be kolat mastered by a player who has shadowlands cards in play? does that count as entering play?
Changing controllers while in play does not count as entering play (although it is "joining"). He can be Kolat Mastered freely.
11.Doji Akiko does her ability act like blessed dojo and also allow someone attaching secrets on the wind to gain extra tokens? or will only blessed dojo do that?
Akiko only affects Chi while your shugenja are casting spells. If you want a bonus while attaching too, use Blessed Dojo.
12.Tamori Shaitung
can she cancel someones wind's truth when they are wind's truthing gains or losses too or from you?
To you, yes. From you, no.
13.Agasha Chieh
how does her ability work? can any clan buy her as a member of their faction? or is it only there for cards like family tactics, agasha join the pheonix, F(sp) Seido region?
It's only there for cards like Family Tactics, etc.
14.Yogo Hatsumi
do you need to bow a holding when you use hatsumi ability? or can you bow now holdings and use it?
She says "any number". You can bow 0 Holdings along with her. Zero is a number.
15.Muchitsujo
can you use his reaction when not in battle, to bow a moving sunetra or somthing?
Yes.
16.Shadow Dragon
will it prevent the personality from straightening with rally cry?
Rallying Cry does not straighten a Personality. Rallying Cry stops the Personality from bowing in the first place. It does not interact with Shadow Dragon in any way.
17 Bezerker Rage
Will the personality be able to straiten on the second straiten phase after using it?
During it, yes. Just not before it.
18.Loyal Yojimbo
will this prevent the first oni's self destruction during his duel?
Yes, since it's a duel effect.
can it prevent the destruction of one of your personlities losing a duel that you initiated?
Yes.
Lesser Shrine and Deeds
Does a honor loss caused by your Deeds not Words pop a Lesser Shrine?
If it came from one of your actions (like bowing a Kabuki Theater Troupe for 1 Honor), yes. Buying a Personality at full price will not destroy it because that's not an action.
Sealed Deck
Are there any rules for Sealed Deck tourneys other than what appears at l5r.alderac.com/ccg/code_of_bushido.html?
Officially, no, though even we ourselves sometimes use an optional rule that Shadowlands players can treat "0" Honor Requirements on Personalities as "-".
I have several players who insist that they can use multiple Unique personalities, and more than 3 of normal cards...
They are incorrect. These arguable results were due to potential loopholes in the DCI's general Sealed Deck floor rules, which we no longer use.
Naval Invasion & Scout
Can I use Scouts ability to play a terrain after I used my first action from naval invasion?
No.
The Dark Allies rule book states; "Players with units in the Naval army may not play Terrains until after one of the other players passes or takes a Battle or Open action." Would the scout ignore this restriction?
No.
Question about Shosuro Turaki
When she copies someone's force, does she copy it with all modifiers ? ie, if she copies someone with a celestial sword who is at 15 force, does she now have 15 ?
All references to a card's stat refer to the current total value of that stat unless the "base" or "printed" value is specifically mentioned. [p. 32] If the sword-bearer's Force is 15, then that's what Turaki copies.
During a battle, if the personality she copied the force from has his force changed, does her force also change ?
No. [p. 41]
If she copied the force from someone she had a waepon, does she get the additional bonus from her own weapons ?
No. [p. 32, 42] The amount she copies is her new grand total.
campsite n kolats
kolat interference wouldnt that totally negate a campsite?
Yes, if you can figure out a way to play it on the same turn you attack the Campsite's player.
Come One at a Time Rules Question
Hey guys, I was wondering, based on the gold wording of COaaT
Come One at a Time 0G 1FV Immediate Terrain. Battle: While there is only one defending Personality, the Personality may, as a Battle action, issue an unrefusable challenge to an opposing Personality, and each player may, as a Battle action, send one of his or her bowed or unbowed attacking units home bowed. The defending Personality may take one such challenge action now."
If a shugenja issued such a challenge it would be an innate ability, is this correct?
It is not correct. The sole defender does not gain the ability.
rules questions
1) A question about Hida Shara
The wording on the card says:
Ranged attacks cannot target cards in sharas unit.
So does that mean that if she has no followers attached that she can be targeted?
No. Shara is always in her own unit.
2) if you attach a tachi to hida tokichiro. Does he still get hi +1/+1 bonus?
Yes, since the bonus it applying to the Tachi, which then adds +4/+4 to Tokichiro.
3)If you have 3 jade works and 3 jade veins. could you destroy all jade veins to make each jade works worth 6 gold?
Yes (or 8 for Jade cards).
Is that jade works only in play?
Yes, under the Gold Edition definition of "your".
Shiba Yoma question
We were playing a game the other day and my opponent used a kiho in a battle containing Shiba Yoma. I cancelled the kiho, but we weren't sure if Shiba Yoma kept the +1/+1 anyway as he got the bonus *before* the kiho was cast and therefore didn't care if it was cancelled or not. What's the ruling?
If it's canceled, it wasn't cast. No bonus.
Hidden Heart
In multiplayer, What happens if the player whom I control one of their personalities with Hidden Heart of Iuchiban leaves play (lose the game), Can I keep their personalitie's control or it's removed from the game?
When a player is eliminated, all cards he or she owns leave the game as well. [rulebook p. 20]
Limited Play Idea
Jeff is there any way that we could get this into the rulebook/sheet as an optional play format.
Maybe. Give it time to actually be used and I'll consider it if it catches on.
Hitomi Echiko
Hitomi Echiko "Reaction: When Echiko is in a duel, bow her instead of focusing to discard the last card focused by the opposing Personality."
Dark Allies rulebook, p.55 "Being bowed does not affect ... Chi"
Does this mean that the following play is legal? Echiko enters a duel with a Personality who has lower Chi. The opposing Personality focuses. Echiko bows and uses her Reaction to discard the opponent's focused card. Then, Echiko strikes and wins the duel (barring some nefarious Reaction from the opponent).
Once Echiko bows, your option to focus or strike is over and play returns to your opponent. You can't focus and strike at the same time -- that includes Reactions taken "instead of" focusing.
Rules Question (Yoritomo Soetsuko)
Yoritomo Soetsuko 3F 3C 0HR 7G 2PH Mantis Clan Samurai * Naval Reaction: Bow before one of your personalities in this army bows due to a another player's card effect to negate the bowing.
Does Soetsuko need to be in an the army to negate the bowing?
She has to be in the same army as the Personality she's keeping unbowed.
what does negate entail?
The bowing of the other Personality doesn't happen. Everything else still does.
example: someone bows a unit with a follower using relentless assault. I use Soetsuko's reaction.
what happens? a) neither the personality or follower bows. b) the follow bows but the personality doesn't

A question came up...
There were some wuestions at out local tournament about Campsite/Draw Them Out.
1. When the player with Campsite uses his reaction it isn't an all or nothing proposition, is it? I mean if 4 units attack can he choose to draw 2 cards rather than 0 or 4? 2. Does he have to announce how many he is drawing or is the reaction to each unit seperate? (I draw one...and another...and another...)
Each unit assignment and each movement is a separate trigger. The Campsite's Reaction is optional against each individual one.
A question came up...
he can choose how many cards he is drawing, up to the number of units asigned/moved, because the asignment of each unit is a trigger he can react to, and is his choice if he uses the reaction or not.
If that is so, a fall on your knees can only cancel 1 card drawing? That does'nt sound right... Or can't Fall cancel campsite?
Fall On Your Knees cannot be used against Campsite's reaction to assigning a unit, since it's not the Battle Action Segment yet. And if it's used against a movement during batte, the Campsite's Reaction can simply be used again, as its canceled attempt doesn't count against its maximum number of uses per turn.
Question
Is it considered a Political Action when the Imperial Favor is discarded to attach the Imperial Standard?
Not under Gold Edition rules, no.

I know you do, since you are now considered the card's controller for all game purposes... I can't find it in the rulebook however.
I answered this earlier in this post. The stolen cards leave the game.
Yes there are too many over powered sensei. It is easier to just drop them all in this limited format. A short list would be Kaede, Kaiu, Yodin, Nio and there are others that I probably cant think of right now. Others are not as bad but it is easier to just say no and reserve them for true open.
[Jeff] Are there any plans for reintroducing senseis in the future?
The Design Team does not believe Sensei are needed in the Gold environment at this time.
Can someone of the AEG please tell me if I can pay AEG by paypal? I would like to order some Season of the Dragon kits for the store I work for, but I can't find it in the Store on the Internet site and the site says that you only accept Visa and Mastercard as payment methods.
Can you even order the season of kits off the website?
No. We do not sell it directly. It is only available from distributors.
