Jeff Alexander, sent 23 August 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

About BB

Dang,

I just received 1 box of starters and 1/2 box of boosters of BB because I wanted the boxtopper so much and now I find out that the boxtopper has been places in the boosterbox.

That @$#!.

Anyway is this also the case for the next set cause then I will only buy a box of boosters and 1-2 starters instead of a box of starters.

Except for a small number of boxes made available early for prerelease events, Broken Blades has moved the "box-topper" promo card in the booster POP display boxes. This is where we plan on inserting it from now on.

Iaijutsu Art duels and Bend Like a Reed

In Iaijutsu Art duels is it allowed to use a Bend Like a Reed after the other person strikes?

Yes. Bend Like a Reed is neither focused nor played instead of focusing.

Poisoned Weapon Question

How long does the -3Chi penalty last?... i assume that its until the end of the current turn, correct?

That is correct.

Questions on We Will Have Revenge

Text of card:

We Will Have Revenge 0G Reaction: Play after losing honor due to another player's action. Target one of your units and one of that player's units. Negate the honor loss. Your unit begins an attack against the other. No units can be assigned or move to the battle, and the battle cannot destroy a Province. The units cannot move to provinces from the battle. You cannot take this action during an attack or duel. FV 3

Will this trigger off of The Wind's Truth sending an honor loss my way?

The Wind's Truth does not change the source of the loss. If, and only if, the loss your opponent redirects to you came from one of her actions, you may react with We Will Have Revenge. (Which means you can't react to, say, the redirected loss from bringing a Corrupt Iron Mine into play.)

Chukundomo & Wave Tattoo

I read on this list that if you were unable to straighten during your straighten phase then the Chukundomo reaction woulnd't kick in. Does that mean if it was attached to a character with a Wave Tattoo that it would never kick in?

I'd say that is correct.

The Code of Bushido + Iaijutsu Challenge

Does "The Code of Bushido" force a samurai to accept a "Iaijutsu Challange"?

Yes.

L5R-CCG-Digest V2002 #573

Let me go on record as saying I wish [Draw Them Out] wasn't here. As a Dragon running Shrio mirumoto with my fate-cycling shugenja, Ive never had to worry before when I draw 17 cards a trun from Chieh, stronghold and Campsite. Thanks for giving me one more thing to worry about.

Hey. I'm here for you.

post for 21 August 2002 / post for 21 August 2002 / open warfare - dark path of shadow ruling question

Behalf Of Jeff Alexander

Maybe the card is clear but i still need a confirmation does "open warfare" negate the use of the send home ability from dark path of shadow stronghold, or you can still use the ability?

The Stronghold ability can still be used.

How is this so?

Past precedent that the Dark Path of Shadow overrides all card effects that try to render it illegal or unusable.

Side note: Played against a Shadowlands Player, this card would appear to nullify the 'cannot swear fealty' cause for the rest of that turn.

That would be why you can't play it on yourself, or on a partner in a Team game. It's one of the many potentially broken combos that our playtesters did catch.

Quick interaction check related to this: Tamori Shukuen makes any Kiho cast by her?

Sorry. "Him." I probably had the name "Shaitung" dancing in the back of my head.

Political (card text). If a Shadowed Tower of the Shosuro player is fielding Shukuen, does this qualify for the 'after playing a Political Action card' trigger to reshuffle the Kiho into the fate deck?

Um... Yes, since it makes the action Political, not just its effects.

Specifically, If I Iaijutsu Challenge my opponent and s/he refuses, that would be _my_ card causing an honor loss, no?

Correct. The loss from Iaijutsu Challenge comes from the Iaijutsu Challenge card and the action of playing it.

Make Your Choice Playable by Shadowlands?

Not one with a Stronghold that prohibits swearing fealty.

The corrolary(sp?) here was : Shadowlands can play Poisoned Weapon even if they can't lose honor. Resolve all other parts of the action. _Thus_ Shadowlands can play make your choice even though they cannot swear fealty. Resolve all other parts of the action.

No. Shadowlands players cannot take actions that involve their own Personalities swearing fealty. Otherwise they could drop as many Oaths of Fealty every game as they drew, for free, giving every single one of their people an additional permanent +1/+1 each time.

Duelling questions

My first question is, what happens when Judgment of Toshiken is played during a duel created by a Geisha Assassin? I'm guessing that the Geisha's Chi stays at the initial amount, and the person targetted gets to Focus again. Is that correct?

Correct. (Well, they'd both get to focus again, but the Assassin can't.)

Second, who do the following cards target, if anyone?

Bend Like A Reed

Targeted by rule #4. Targets the thing it affects: your duelist.

Kakita Technique

Untargeted by rule #3.

Face Me

Targeted by rule #1. Targets both duelists by card text.

Unprepared

Untargeted by rule #3.

Shosuro Technique

Targeted by rule #4. Targets the things it affects: both Personalities. This is true for both its actions.

Strike of Flowing Water when played to discard a Focus

Untargeted by rule #3.

Hitomi Echiko

Targeted by rule #4. Targets the thing it affects: your opponent's last focus card.

Blade of Truths

Targeted by rule #4. Targets the thing it affects: the opposing player in the duel.

He's Mine!

Targeted by rule #4. Targets the things it affects: both your Personalities.

Snow Crane Tattoo

Targeted by rule #4. Targets the thing it affects: the focus card whose value gets raised.

Torii Tattoo

Untargeted by rule #3.

Shiryo no Hotei

Untargeted by rule #3.

Do any cards which are played as Focusses target? (Karmic Strike, A Perfect Cut.)

No. Focusing is neither targeted nor an action.

When Mirumoto Shokan issues a Iaijutsu Challenge, is his controller able to play any reactions to the refusal of that challenge (Nagori)?

No. [extension of the ruling on Bayushi Yokuan/Shosuro Aroru]

How about the honour gain for winning the Challenge?

Not unless the gain happens after the duel ends, which would be extremely unusual in the case of the gain awarded to the winner.

Loyal Yojimbo?

Clearly illegal.

Kaelung and Kolats

Say I cast a Wind's Truth or Purity of Spirit using Kaelung. Could my opponet react to this by playing investigation?

The traits of an action are only those of the card that the action is written on. [p. 34]. The Wind's Truth is merely a Political Kiho action, no matter who casts it.

Bringing personalities in play Q

Just to confirm this, as the rulebook isn't explicit. Do you gain honor for out of clan personalities you bring into play?

No.

Unaligned in BB [Jeff, Dave]

The Unaligned trait seems to be a fleeting thing in L5R -- not given as often as one would think, given to those you wouldn't expect, then taken away soon after. My friends and I looked in vain for useful ronin without clan alignments during the first arc (we'd given up by the second) -- they kept getting sucked up into Toturi's Army and YA.

Now we seem to have cut out the middle-man entirely. Why, Powers That Be, isn't the Unaligned trait on a few more Personalities in BB? Specifically, I ask because it is lacking on Garen and Katsu, prime candidates for it. If you wanted it there and this was a mistake, fine. But if there is a thematic reason, please clue us in, because it is utterly opaque.

We're deliberately using the "Unaligned" trait in a more intuitive manner now, typically only assigning it to Personalities who are affiliated with none of the Factions in the rulebook. That includes the Shadowlands, because, special affiliation rules notwithstanding, a Personailty with that trait is still conceptually "working for them" rather than being detached from every major group in the game.
