post for 14 August 2002

Jeff Alexander, sent 15 August 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Seeing as there are Broken Blades preprelease tournaments happening, plus I have the actual cards in-house to refer to, I'm going to start answering questions about that set now.

Broken Blades Ruling Questions

Kisada Shrine Can return Bowed Personalities?

Yes. It's used after destruction, when the Personality is in the discard pile and no longer bowed.

Lesser Shrine Triggers on a refused Iaijutsu challenge?

No. It's not your card or action causing the loss.

Pirate Wharf Two gold per action?

Yes. The effect lasts all turn.

Agasha Chieh Would be a Doji if joining Dragon?

Yes, due to Doji Reju.

Yogo Tiejki May not challenge Tamori Shukuen?

Initially, I'll say correct, but I'll forward it to the Rules Team.

Ide Sadanobu Must be Bowed in conjunction with stronghold?

Yes. Sadanobu produces Gold for the same thing that the Stronghold is paying for.

Make Your Choice Playable by Shadowlands?

Not one with a Stronghold that prohibits swearing fealty.

Gaheris No Shiryo Can be used with Armor of the mountain?

Can be used. Gaheris's unit will not move in, but the other movement is still negated.

Hound Of The Lost So you cannot cancel it with Towers of the Asako?

Correct. You cannot.

Chukandomo Will trigger if the personality cannot straighten?

No, because the Personality dies instead of straightening. [card text]

Will of Air I can use all 3 actions on Cascading Fires?

Yes.

Question regarding Chukandomo

Chukandomo says: During your Straighten Phase, if

this Personality is bowed and there are any Personalities in play with more Personal Honor, destroy this Personality instead of straightening Him or her. Just to make sure I understand the definition of "during"...if say, a personality with 2 PH has it attached to him and that personality attacks and goes home bowed, and then my opponent brings in a a 3 PH guy, when my straighten phase comes up, the personality with Chukandomo is destroyed, right?

Right.

The biggest BB question at the Tacoma pre-release

Exactly how does Solitary Engagement work?

how I interpret it, and please correct me if I'm wrong. That's actually exactly what I want. This card caused confusion galore.

Wording:

Battle: Send home one of your units and one opposing unit. Your Personality challenges the other Personality to a duel.

My interpretation:

a) There must be a unit of yours and a unit of theirs to target, both of which must be legal.

Correct. That part is straightforward.

b) default of a duel = loser dies, refusable with no penalty

Correct. [p. 61]

c) default of being sent home from battle = bowed

Incorrect. The default of being sent home from battle is that you're in your home now instead of at the battle. Nothing else.

The challenge part of this card is a drawback, not an added feature. One of your units gets to remove itself and another unit. That other unit can then probably destroy yours if it wants to and is big enough.

source of honor loss from Iai Challenge

But I can't find anything in the archive or rulebook that discusses what the source of effects are - sepcifically with regard to Iaijutsu Challenge.

Archive, section "GENERAL RULES", subsection "Effects":

] "The source of an effect is generally where the effect is physically ] written in ink. Notable exceptions include cards or strongholds that ] grant actions to other cards (e.g., the bowing ability of ] Personalities controlled by a Yogo Towers belongs to the ] Personality).

It's just a few pages from the top.

Rules question about Make Your Choice...

Make Your Choice Open: Give one of your bowed or unbowed Personalities without your Faction trait, the Unaligned trait, or the Shadowlands trait +1/+1 permanently and straighten that personality, if necessary. The personality swears fealty to you and permanently loses other faction alignments.

This can be read one of two ways. Which of the following is correct:

A) Give one of your bowed or unbowed Personalities without your Faction trait, *without* the Unaligned trait, or *without* the Shadowlands trait

B) Give one of your bowed or unbowed Personalities without your Faction trait, *with* the Unaligned trait, or *with* the Shadowlands trait

I don't see how you get B). If I go to a restaurant and order a sandwich "without pickles, peppers, or onions", should I expect peppers and onions to be on it?

The answer is A).

Ki-rin Shrine and Fortress of the dragonfly

I was wondering if you bring in a ki rin shrine, or fortress of the dragonfly in play they come in play bowed, well when bowed do they still give the 1/1 or +1 chi bonus/. or do you have to wait until the holdings are st

You still get the bonus. "Bowing does not turn off continuous effects of a card, such as traits, Force and Chi bonuses, or effects that are not actions" [rulebook p. 24]
