Not Another Step Q

This may seem kind of silly, but can I use Not Another Step for a combined ranged attack?

As long as the Personality participates, yes.

being bowed

Does a bowed unit have zero force or just contribute zero force to army total? If the bowed unit is truly 0 force then a pearl magic or Heart of the Inferno will detroy a whole bowed army very dirty!!!!! Can some one help Clarify please on this Ruling

Here's what the FAQ is going to say:

Q: My opponent has an 8 Force samurai in a battle against me, but he's bowed. Can I kill him with a strength 2 ranged attack? I think I can. His Force is 0 when he's bowed.

A: You can't. Although the Force total of his UNIT -- and the Force that that unit adds to his army -- is 0, as an individual CARD, his Force is still 8. A ranged attack below strength 8 won't kill him.

Even when a unit is just one Personality card with nothing attached, there's still a distinction between individual card Force and total unit Force. Some cards and game effects, like To Do What We Must and the Resolution Segment at the end of a battle, care about one, and some, like Test of Might and ranged attacks, care about the other. You need to read the card or the rulebook carefully and decide which kind of Force it refers to.

Followup discussion for Jeff regarding Isawa's Last Wish.

Just to clarify here, I'll jump in.

No, I'm not Jeff. I'm not even the next best thing. But I try. Still, grain of salt and all that ...

"You must choose all targets when you announce an action, before you begin paying any costs."

The problem with Isawa's Last Wish is that YOU (the player of the Action) do not choose the target of the "retribution" part of the Action. There isn't really a definitively written rule in the rulebook or archive for when another player is forced to choose targets as part of another player's action.

I think the best thing to do in that case is to work with precident: Choose the target when instructed to do something that requires targeting by the card. This is how you work out the targeted parts of re-attaching followers after Street to Street, after all.

With that in mind, Isawa's Last Wish will never instruct the controler of the "Victim" to choose which card to "retaliate" against until the first effect (the controler of ILW destroying something) has resolved, because it explicitly says, "Do X. THEN player B does Y."

Hence, the action of Isawa's Last Wish won't qualify for the trigger "When an action targets a shugenja you control" of Asako Towers until it has already produced and resolved its first effect. By that time, it is too late for Towers of Asako to stop the destruction of the first card due to canceling the Isawa's Last Wish action.

That's precisely right. Thanks for the accurate in-depth explaination.

Crane Clan Deck:other clan personalities?

Hello, I just purchased a Gold Ed. Crane deck and inside I found something very awkward. Inside the deck was a loin clan scout, a unicorn clan warrior, and a dragon clan samauri. I was wondering why they mixed other clan personalities in a crane deck.

Because only 50 cards in the deck are standardized. (That includes the four Winds and one Stronghold "card".) The rest are randomly chosen from the same source as the cards that go into booster packs.

And my other question was how many wind cards can you start with in the beginning of the game??

Zero or one. [DA rulebook p. 28]

Question about Ambush Strategist

Would Ambush Strategist give a force bonus to a spell producing a ranged attack? EG: Cascading Fire...

"Effects that try to change a value that a card does not normally possess fail -- the value will always be 0." [p. 32]

Ambush Strategist tries to give a Force bonus to the Spell, since that's where the Ranged Attack is, and it fails.

Master Bowman

if i overlay the exp master bowman on the non exp version, does all my farmlands followers go from having a ranged one attack to no ranged attack at all becuase of the overlaying Trait rule?

Yes. They lose the Ranged 1 Attack.

Yoritomo Heishiro and his ability(Jeff or Zen)

A question came up on the Mantis Website (Tsuruchi's Arrow) about Yoritomo Heishiro being able to benefit from Port Towns due to them being considered Ports due to the Foo Rule. What we were wondering is if you are able to bow the region to give him his force or chi boost?

Yes. There is no rule prohibiting Regions (or Fortifications) from bowing.

A Stout Heart and others

Hello, I was looking through my deck earlier because my coisin said if I want to do well in a tournememnt that I should know all of my cards very estutely, and i ran into a few confusing ones. First "A Stout Heart" Reaction: Play this card when Fear targets one of your units, negate the Fear. I was wondering what is fear and what does it do?

A Personality with an ability like "Battle: Fear 3" can, once per battle and without bowing, target one other unit in his battle and cause all Followers in that unit with a Force of 3 or less to bow. You ought to be able to find more details in any edition of the rulebook, including the one online at http://l5r.alderac.com/ccg/rulebook.html .

Next the "Katkita Technique" which reads" Play this card when one of your personalities enters a duel against a personality with lower personal honor. Your Personality has the first option to strike or focus." what are striking and focusing. i don't really get the whole sequence of dueling, if someone could explain it it would be great.

At the end of a duel, the Personality with the higher Chi wins and the other loses (which usually means dying). Each duelist's Chi at the end of the duel is equal to the Chi they had when the duel started plus the Focus Values of any cards played as Focuses during the duel.

When someone is challenged, he has the first option to either strike or focus. If he focuses, he gets to play a card from his hand face-down as a focus -- a secret Chi bonus -- and then his opponent can focus or strike. As long as players keep focusing, it bounces back and forth, with both duelists gaining Chi bonuses that are unknown to the other player. Finally, someone will strike, either because they want to or because they have to. When that happens, all focuses are revealed, the duelists figure out what they raised their Chi to, and now that we know who won and who lost, the results of the duel are applied.

Kakita Technique lets you change who gets the first chance to focus or strike. It is almost always used to allow your Personality to challenge someone with lower Chi and strike immediately to end the duel and win it before they can focus.

Tokens. I have no clue what tokens are.

Tokens are any kind of physical object -- glass beads, dice, pennies -- used to mark that something has been added to a card. Some tokens carry Force and Chi adjustments, some represent extra Followers, and some merely have a particular word attached to them that's used to identify them as one particular type of token so that other cards can interact with them.

L5R-CCG-Digest V2002 #548

"If you bring into play a Personality with your Faction's trait, you may> either lower his or her Gold cost by 2 or add the Personality's Personal Honor *just before the personality enters play.* "

Does this also mean that personalities who enter play dishonored still have their personal honor get added to the total.

No. That ruling is not going to change.

Does this also mean this alters how "The Company You Keep" works?

No.

A lot of changes in L5R eh?

I haven't played L5R in a long time. Anyway, I have a few questions:

1. Can we still use the cards from the older sets, like from Time of Void and stuff?

It's legal in Open tournaments, guaranteed. In Gold tournaments, it's only legal if it's been reprinted with a Gold bug in some other set or it's a Personality and has had a "Soul of..." version produced.

2. Is Toturi's Army dead now? =(

It's long gone. Toturi himself is dead, and most of its surviving members were either incorporated into the Imperial Guard or Monkey Clan decades ago or resumed their leaderless ways as true ronin.

Tsuno Attack

when the event Tsuno Attack Resolves does the defender get to asign his personilties to defend against the one prov under attack?

Yes.

a few rules questions

1) if I use oath of fealty does this remove the shadowlands faction trait from the cards that I oath?

No. There is no "Shadowlands Faction trait".

2) can yasuki hachi xp overlay daidoji hachi?

No. They are different cards.

also am i correct to assume that daidoji hachi and yasuki hachi count together towards the number of non-unique hachi's i can include in my deck?

There is no need to assume it. The Yasuki Hachi card itself says so.

Season Dates

What days do the Season of the Mantis & Season of the Dragon run through? Is Season of the Dragon even out yet?

Season of the Mantis runs through June and July. Season of the Dragon runs through August and September. It should be available by now.

naga Shugenja

can i use a naga Shugenja's open ablity to give all naga cards in play a 1f bonus outside of a battle ?

Since it's an Open action, it can be used during battle or during any player's Action Phase.

If used during an Action Phase, it's always allowed.

Due to the Rules of Presence and Relevance, if a battle is underway, the Naga Shugenja can be used if and only if either

A) the Naga Shugenja itself is in the current battle, or B) you have at least one unit in the current battle AND there is at least one Naga card in the current battle.

Either way, all Naga cards in play get +1F, not just those in the current battle.

does the same go for Heart Beat Drummers? They do not target any thing or come from the battle.

They work the same way, only you don't have option A) above since the Drummers can't ever be in a battle.
