A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Subject: [L5R-CCG] Re: L5R-CCG-Digest V2002 #522
I thought I read that 1000 years of darkness was a "non-collectable" set. Doesn't that mean that the cards won't be usable in tournaments?
It means the set is a complete playset. It will contain the maximum deck-playable number of each card (1 for Events and Unique cards, 3 of everything else).
Overlaying and coming back in to play
If I bring in a non-exp personality and then overlay an exp version on the card (and perhaps overlay an exp2 version after that), what happens if the personality dies and comes back in to play?
"If an overlayed Personality leaves play, remove all cards but the top one from the game. Keep them handy for reference, though, since the top card still has the bottom cards' abilities." [DA rulebook p. 41]
Here's an example: First turn I buy gold. Second turn, I buy Kida Kuon, overlay Kuon exp and then overlay Kuon exp2 on that. Third turn I attack with Kuon who gets To Do What We Musted into the ground. I play Feign Death (I'd say Kisada's Shrine, but it isn't released yet). Kuon exp2 went to the dead pile and then comes back in to play.
Does Kuon nonexp and Kuon exp come back with him (all stapled together) or is it just Kuon exp2 that comes back by himself?
Only Kuon Exp2 comes back, but he has all the stats, abilities, and changes he had when there were still two cards under him.
"Offensive Assets" [JEFF] (was:Re: [L5R-CCG] post for 31 July 2002)
Comments Below:
Admittedly, this trait coud be called "Horseshoes" and have no rulebook text at all. It would be almost as good. Yu, as originally designed, was a terrible failure.
It looks that way because players keep trying to use it as an offensive asset when it isn't.
[KAI] What do you define as "offensive assets," Jeff?
They're trying to use it as a tool to destroy other players' cards on command. They want to be able to attack with an army and destroy anything that stands in their way automatically, no matter what. I'll be frank: if it ever gets that powerful, it will be because Design (that means ME) screwed up. But until that happens, it will be seen as useless by a large percentage of our players because they'll still be trying to use it as PK, and it's not efficient when used primarily in that role.
Yu isn't bad because players are using it wrong, Jeff. Yu is terrible you can't use on its own merits to pursue winning strategies. All the other Clan's focus abilities are "offensive assets," helping them accomplish actions that contribute to victory conditions with direct, reliable outcomes.
Lion - Tactician (military) Unicorn - Cavalry (military) Crane - Economics + Personal Honor (honor) Phoenix - Cheap Spells / Kiho / Shugenja (honor) Dragon - Card Draw + Duels (honor) Mantis - Naval Invasion (military) Scorpion - Dirty Fighting (military) Horde - Evil Monsters (military)
Crab - Yu (...)
Does Yu help take provinces? No. Does Yu help gain honor? No. Does Yu help get rings in play? No. Is Yu an "offensive asset" like the rest of the Clan schticks? No.
That would be why it's nowhere near close to our list of things to focus the Crab Clan on.
Rikugunshokan Question.....
My question is, if there is no restrictions on Attacking and the unit Rikugunshokan is in is not bowed. Can you choose not to attack with the unit and just take the 2 honor hit?
According to the card, no.
Bayushi Sunetra
Heres something I wasn't sure about. Can Sunetra move herself into another province after straighting from "Inner Fire"?
Yes. She doesn't bow to do it and it doesn't target herself.
Kaiu Forge Q
I do not have a gold version of this card, so I was curious if it had been MRPed. Do the weapon tokens count as a card?
Not in Gold. It's a Weapon and an Item, but not a card.
