Rules for 11 July 2002

Zen Faulkes, sent 12 July 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

Rules Question: Ide Michisuna

I shame a dishonoured samurai (Mirumoto Shiryu lets say, a samurai with 3ph) he seppukus and I react with the Ide.

The rulings conflict with the personality, does the Ide over-ride the rules as explicitly stated and as such can he react to seppuku even though the stated event(target personality is being restored to honor) never occurs?

First cardinal rule: card text takes precedence over general rules.

does Shiryu get to modify the shame to a 1pt honour loss instead of a seven?

Michasuna's Reaction only negates one effect: restoration to honor. The total honor loss is 1 point for the Shame, and 3 for the Personality dying dishonorably.

Rules Question: Ide Michisuna

I do have a question about Misahuna[.] [Why] did a Unicorn get that ability?

Perhaps because no faction has exclusive claim to any single mechanic? It may also be a reflection of the magisterial arm of the Unicorn clan.

I need clarification (to ZF)

if you cannot pay a card's cost it goes back where it came from.

I said, "Incorrect. Archive, General Rules, Costs: "If a cost for an action cannot or will not be paid, the action is canceled. [JA, 25 January 2002]" Javier points out that the rulebook says an attaching card does go back to where it came. My answer wasn't wrong, but it was incomplete. Sorry.

With regards to Revering the Past: the "return to hand" rule doesn't apply, because it's not a matter of not meeting a cost. It's about whether it can be legally played.

[Stand Against the Waves]

May be canceled with Asako Towers / Flee the darknes?

See Archive entry: yes.

May be played if unopposed?

"Ring of what?" I think so.

Rules for 10 July 2002

May one play Mushin when one has no units in a battle?

Sure.

Zen, can you explain the logic behind this?

Sure. The logic is faulty. :( You can't play Mushin where you have no units, for the reasons you state. This is a CORRECTION of my erroneous ruling. (I reckon a ruling should be up for more than a day before it's called a reversal.)

"Rules Geek, surrender your medal in shame!"

On: Mushin
rules question

What's the definition of the word "other" on [Show of Strength]?

The defender is ignored during lobby attempts by any player in the game besides him or herself.

Another Time Question

Another Time reads: When you reveal this card as a Focus card for a duel, cancel the duel and discard all Focus cards without effect.

Does this mean that if a duel such as Hida Kosho's is cancelled, it never happens, and therefore can be used again?

Oh, bother.

Archive, General rules, Canceling: "Honor gains and losses cannot be 'canceled;' *only actions can be canceled.* [JA, July 2000]" (My emphasis.)

There are several non-action effects that creates duels (e.g., events: Another Time, Sumai Match). I think Another Time should read, "*negate* the duel." Kosho's challenge could not be used again.

*This is a tentative ruling.* Changing card text falls into the big "E" folder, and I'm much happier when Jeff Alexander issues errata rather than me. Jeff may have some other ideas about how this card should work.
