Jeff Alexander, sent 17 May 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Blade of Truths question

Hmm, however the Blade of Truths does say "during the duel" and "when entering" is "during the duel". I think this problem stems from bad wording, since by the precise wording of Blade of Truths it is allowed to affectively 'look back in time', since it has a reaction which effects the duel before the reactions trigger comes up.

You are reading too much into the card. Look at the original Lion Stronghold. It had an Open action that give a Lion Personality +2F while attacking. Has anyone ever thought that giving one that bonus would raise his Force retroactively back to the beginning of the battle? ("Hey, that was still 'while attacking'!")

Blade of Truths doesn't look back in time.

Question- Battle Maidens

Only the Battle Maidens

The follower yeah? So that means Battle Maidens are just a 6 gold for 2 force (that goes up to 3 force when attacking) cavalry follower with a disgracefully prohibitive honour requirement?

It's hardly prohibitive considering the title. Most Unicorn Personalities with that same trait will have no problem.

Blade of Truths question

It's not that simple, since the card says you can also not play reactions with that focus value. Which means that it depends on which reaction is taken first. And reactions would start with the person being challenged, I believe... or is it the active player that gets first reaction?

The first step in determining which Reaction goes first is to read both of them and see if they tell you. You only use the "player to the left of the one who caused the trigger" rule if the first step can't give you an answer.

The active player doesn't get special treatment under Gold Edition rules.

Blade of Truths question

Look at it this way, if it helps - The stages of a duel go like this:

1) Challenge - This can be a trigger for a reaction 2) Accept/Refuse - This can be a trigger for a reaction 3) "Entering" - This is where the combatants are walking to their starting places and readying themselves. This can be a trigger for a reaction. 4) Focus - Maneuvering, focusing of chi and application of dueling techniques. This can be a trigger for a reaction. 5) Strike - Someone sees an opening and, in gunslinger terms, "draws". This can be a trigger for a reaction. 6) Resolution - Someone lives, someone dies. This can be a trigger for a reaction.

Only stage 4 is happening "during the duel".

Cross out "Only" and add 3, 5, and 6.

Light Mounted Infantry Q

Reads: Cavalry; Battle: Once per battle, if Light Mounted Infantry has the Cavalry trait, remove the trait and give Light Mounted Infantry +1F.

Is the loss of the Cavalry trait permanent? I think that it is, but the card implies (by using once per battle) that it isn't.

Is the +1F bonus permanent. On this I'd say no, as it doesn't say it specifically.

Both effects last for the rest of the turn. [p. 43]

Alliance

Yes, a Shadowlands player can use Alliance to get members of other clans for 2G less. This has been true for some months now.

??? This is new right? In the past they never could, it was written in the rule book.

The rule and book have changed.

Imperial Favor question

Hiya, My one and only question is if I don't use a wind can I still lobby and use the Imperial Favor?

You may still lobby, and you may still discard it to pay for cards and actions that require it, but you don't have any Wind actions available.

Yu question

If a buffed up crab samurai with a whole lot of Yu is hit by retirement and loses the samurai trait, can he still use the Yu?

Yes.

Rules Q - Togashi Iroshi

Togashi Iroshi - Limited: Bow to look at the top 5 cards of your fate deck. (period, seperate ability?) You may discard a card from your hand to reveal one to the other players and put it in your hand if it is a Tattoo card, then place the remaining cards on the bottom of your deck.

If I use his ability to look at the top 5 fate cards, but do not discard a card to retrieve a tattoo, are the cards replaced on the top of the deck? (in the same order as revealed)

Yes.

Imperial Favor question

I play Shadowlands Horde and paly a wind just because it kills the use of some cards against me. I can hear the rattling of the "Oh no he is corrupting the Winds"

Shadowlands players were specifically allowed to select a Wind if they wanted to. There's no reason to deny one particular Faction the chance of influencing the storyline that way.

Imperial Favor question

You have to run a Wind, at least in tournaments run with the official rules.

No you don't.

Endless Deluge Question

First, the text...

Type Spell Title Endless Deluge Rarity/Edition R A Perfect Cut Text Limited Elemental Ritual: Target a Stronghold. Bow this and any number of your other Shugenja with a total combined Chi greater than this Stronghold's Province Strength, and destroy this spell to prevent the Stronghold from using any of its actions until the start of your next turn. (Sensei abilities are considered to be printed on the Stronghold.) Gold 6 Focus 3 Artist Mark Evans

Now, my question is... If a player plays this card against a Shadowlands player and then causes them an honor loss, do they lose the game because of dishonor? (I tend to think no, however my playgroup disagrees)

The inability for his honor to change is not an action. It is not removed.

Fear this. Question for the list and Jeff A.

Shiba Kai has Untested Troops attached. I bow Clear Water Village to make this unit immune to fear. Then I attack, the oppposing player defends with Voitagi. As his first action he target Shiba Kai's unit with fear 3. Does this bow Untested Troops?

Yes.

Also silly question, does test of courage target the peep or the action sending the peep out of the battle?

By the Gold MRP, it targets both.

Basically can I test of courage the same peep in the same battle twice?

Not anymore.

Aikune's Father

On Aikune's Spirit Wars version, it mentions his father died. Any clues as to who he is? Unprinted Phoenix guy? Or someone we might know and have heard of?

Tsukune's marriage was a political marriage; she never really got over losing Tadaka. Her husband is as yet unrevealed, but he is currently no longer alive.
