A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Rule Question
In a recent GoldEd game, my Lion went up against my best friend's Dragon. Second turn, he had Tamori Chosai out, and Matsu Domotai came calling, with Elite Light Infantry and Spearmen in tow. He defended, and passed. I played Strength of Purity. He then Overconfidenced Domotai. I went with it, but I thought if there was one character in the whole game immune to Overconfidence, it would be Domotai, with that whole "Force cannot exceed Chi" thing going on. I argued that, since Domotai's Force and Chi both went up by 3 at the same time, Overconfidence shouldn't work. He retorted by saying that Overconfidence bowed someone who got a force bonus greater than their PRINTED Chi, which was 3 for Domotai. I debated that bonuses that add directly to stats like SoP change the "printed" Chi, so now Domotai's Printed Chi was 6.
Which one of us was right?
Your friend was. [DA rulebook, p. 32]. "Printed stat" means exactly that: what's printed on the card.
Another Rule Question
When you attach a Follower with an Honor Requirement to a personality that can legally attach it, if the personality is then dishonored, the Follower remains attached.
So when a Ninja Shapeshifter or Shosuro Taushui copies someone's Shugenja trait,
Which it can't do, by both errata and later by MRP. The NSS can't copy traits. But if it could...
and then attaches a Spell, at the end of the turn, when that Shugenja trait disappears, is the Spell discarded, or does it remain attached?
It would also remain attached. However, it would not be castable.
Some more questions
Going a bit more technical now to try to deepen my understanding of the game mechanics :)
Is a reaction considered an action?
It's not just considered one -- it IS one! [p. 48]
(Could I cancel a reaction with an effect that lets me cancel an appropriate action?)
Yes.
Is a Kiho anything more than an action with the Kiho keyword?
Yes: its effects are treated as Spell effects. Other than that, it's an Action card with an extra word on it.
(And different card art?) I noticed that the bowing of a monk or shugenja is not inherent in the Kiho trait, but rather in the effect of each Kiho card)
Crucial point: it's not an effect, it's a cost.
So is a Kiho just a Kiho Action just like there are Political Actions and Elemental Actions? So could I cancel a Kiho using a card that lets me cancel an action?
Yes.
Are cards used in a duel at a battle considered to be in a battle?
They are not in play, but they do occur "during" a battle.
More specific, could I use Fall on your Knees to cancel a Poisoned Weapon "inside" an Iaijutsu Duel?
Yes, but mainly because Fall On Your Knees is playable during a particular part of the game turn. Your question about whether the duel is "in" the battle is beside the point.
How about Faith in my Clan using a Clan Champion outside the duel?
Yes.
Kolat Master question
********************************************************
Errata/Rulings for Kolat Master
Most Recent Printing (MRP) changes Clarified: Personality gains the Kolat trait.
Zen's Rules Archive Reads, "Kolat Master 10G 2FV Limited: Take control of another player's Personality with under 4 Chi for the rest of the game. Destroy each of the Personality's Followers with an Honor requirement over 0. Lose 4 Honor." [MRP, Gold Edition, 1 July 2001]
********************************************************
So does the targeted person gain the Kolat Trait or not?
Not.
campsite(jeff)
campsite reads Reaction: Once per unit per turn, after a player assigns or moves a unit to attack this Province, draw a card.
my question is how did anyone get the idea that that means draw a card for every attacking unit
That's what the card says: once per turn per unit. If four units assign, each can be reacted to once.
my other question is if there right how did they let someone print a card that indefinately stops all attacks let alone print it in gold
Make no mistake, it's a powerful card. But it's nowhere near as powerful as you make it out to be.
1000 years of darkness was:HoR where are you?
why would aeg created 1000 years of darkness instead of a purely gold legal or diamond legal HOR part 2
The question of "What if Fu Leng had won?" is one that's been asked since the day he lost. It's a subject that the existing L5R community holds far more interest in than they would in another dozen near-strangers. The opportunity to tell this story is simply too rich to pass by.
