post for 19-22 April 2002

Jeff Alexander, sent 23 April 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

3. Traits overwrite when you overlay, so does that mean if i have Isawa Kaede Exp. In play and i overlay Exp 2, that now I no longer get the abilty of my shugenja not having to bow to cast kihos in the same army as her, and only get that Ninja cards cost 2 gold to straighten?

That is correct.

It was my understanding that abilities are still inherited, however. Aren't those Kaede's abilities rather than her traits (which I assume are supposed to be "shugenja", "master of the void" etc.).

"Ability" means "action": something preceeded with one of the four action type keywords. "Shugenja in the same army as Kaede do not need to bow to perform kiho. Kaede need not bow to perform kiho." is not an ability, it is a trait, so it is not kept when overlaying Kaede Exp2 over Kaede Exp.

Question about Spell Effects, RA and Nakamuro.

Are the RA from a spell that produces several consecutives RA different effects? or is it just one spell effect?

this would be quite important when cancelling/negating the effects.

Each RA is a separate effect as far as negation goes.

also... if they are different spell effects, can you play the ring of air after making 6 consecutive RA with cascading fire?

The whole spell counts as only one of the three needed elements to play the Ring of Air.

if they are just one.. can you redirect all those 6 with nakamuro xp? (asuming your opponent used it and targeted your cards)

You can change only one target with each retargeting effect.

Heavy Armor Q

This came up in a game today. I checked the accumulated rulings and the rulebook, and it wasn't entirely clear.

---- Heavy Armor +1F +0C 2G Armor. Will only attach to a Personality with more than 2 Force. Ranged Attacks targeting this Personality have -2 strength. 3F ----

If I combine 2 or more ranged attacks to hit a person with Heavy Armor (say, a ranged 4 and a ranged 2), what happens?

A) Both of the ranged attacks target the personality, and so both are reduced by two, and there is a total ranged 2 attack. B) Since they are combined, they make one ranged 6 attack, and so the result after the modification is a ranged 4 attack.

It is B.

Quick Question

If Yoritomo Katoa bows to pay the cost of Call to Arms is he straightened by Call to Arms' effect?

Yes.

Moto Technique v. Towers of the Asako [Ruling?]

Phoenix Shugenja w/loads of chi challenges my lowly (non-Moto) 3 chi personality w/an I.Duel during battle.

As my first focus I play, Moto Technique (Reaction: Play this card face up as a Focus card in a duel. Bow both Personalities in the duel. If your Personality is Moto and has higher Force than the other Personality, you Persoality straightens.)

What happens if the Phoenix player bows the Towers of Asako:

a) The Phoenix player can't bow the towers, because Moto Technique does not target.

b) The Towers cancels Moto Technique. Neither personality bows and the focus is discarded.

c) The Towers cancels Moto Technique. Neither personality bows but the focus remains.

d) The Towers cancels Moto Technique. The Phoenix personality does not bow, but my personality does. The focus remains.

e) Insert something funny here (ala Leon).

b). It becomes the Phoenix player's turn to focus or strike.

Encircling Terrain Q

How does encircling Terrain work in a batlle where there are allies involved?

It does just what it says:

"Battle: The Attacker and Defender each target one of their own units in this battle. Send all other units in this battle home without bowing."

The Attacker and Defender have to target units they control, not units in their armies, so neither may choose an allied unit to stay.

shadowlands no political for jeff

one of things that need desparately needs to be clairifyed is the shadowlands in ability to play political actions cards like remorseful seppuku cant be used and also isnt things like marrys a barbarain and secrets on the wind political

Another poster has already echoed my thoughts: it's spelled out quite clearly in the front of every Gold Edition and later rulebook. None of these actions are, nor have they ever been, Political, and they are certainly not now that all of them are in Gold Edition without the "Political" keyword.

I Believed In You question

A personality with - honour requirement and I believed in You how does this work? does - count as 0?

"I Believed In You" will never kill a Personality with an Honor Requirement of "-".

L5R-CCG-Digest V2002 #244

So, in the rulebook somewhere, it has a section on copying abilities with the shapeshifter?

Yes: pp. 41-42, with some other applicable rules on p. 32.

Misprint in DA

I've noticed when opening my box of boosters and starters that Bayushi Toru has the Rare symbol on the card, which is a star. At first I thought that he was rare, but whenever you open a booster he appears with the uncommons in the back.

In my box of boosters and starters I have gotten 5 of him so he is definitely Uncommon. Am I wrong?

No. His rarity symbol is a typo. He is Uncommon.

L5R: Isawa's Last Wish

Isawa's Last Wish Unique Item +0 +0 Battle: Destroy an opposing card. The target's controller then destorys any one of your cards.

The question is if you Destroy a personality does it destroy the followers as well since they don't have a personality anymore?

Whenever a card leaves play in any way, all cards attached to it leave play in the same manner. [rulebook p. 60] Destroying a Personality will destroy (not just discard) all her Followers too. This situation is really no different from killing someone with an Iaijutsu Duel.

Kyuden Agasha Question

Just a clarification: If my stronghold is Kyuden Agasha and I have an Osugi in play, will the spells that I attach to Osugi cost zero or 1?

Zero.

Same thing with the event Bloom of the White Orchid, will spells cost zero or 1? Thanks!

Zero.

A Couple of Questions from OK

Just a couple questions we could use answering please

#1... If Street to Street is in play and I use the Scorpion Clan Martyr with a follower to switch him in with someone who was in the battle (or any other switch or move into the battle action for that matter) what happens to that personalty's follower? Do they remain attached since the personality was not in the battle at the time the Street to Street triggered?

Followers brought into the battle after Street to Street is played stay attached to their Personalities. They also do not need to reattach when the terrain goes away.

#2... What happens when more than one person plays Take The Initiative?

Whoever plays the last one goes first.

Can you play it in response to someone playing it on you? (example: to stop Shadowlands from getting to go first)

Yes.

Rally vs. Fall On Your Knees

Just checking: Fall On Your Knees will not stop a Rally, right?

The Rules Archive says that FOYK won't stop anything that happens during or after resolution of a battle, but I am not completely sure of when Rallying Cry hits, so I wanted to ask.

Read the cards:

Rallying Cry Reaction: Play this card after a Resolution Segment. Your units in the battle do not become bowed by the combat.

Fall on Your Knees Reaction: Play this card when a player plays a Reaction during the Battle Action Segment. Cancel the Reaction.

Rallying Cry is not played during the Battle Action Segment. FoYK can't cancel it.
