post for 6 March 2002
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Naval Invasion
Naval Invasion If every Personality and Follower in only one army has the Naval trait, then immediately after that battle is chosen for resolution, the Naval army's leader may elect to make the battle a naval invasion.
Does this mean that you can only declare a Naval Invasion at one province per attack phase? (that is, should the rule read "in only one army at a battle"?) -- Onobori-san
By the posted text, the decision to invade navally is made right after the Attacker chooses which battle resolves next. It can be made every time a battle is chosen. The only armies that matter are the two in that battle.
Rules Q
Is a Bonus considered a positive or negative amount, or either?
Normally, a change needs to be to a larger number to be considered a bonus. Cards, as well as particular sections of the rulebook, can always override this general rule by outright stating that a certain change is a bonus, and I think there are a number of situations where bonuses of 0 exist.

or Command Group all you tacticians?
I think you're thinking about a card other than Command Group. Command Group has nothing to do with Tacticians and doesn't look like it would cause any unusual problems when put in a combo with Samurai's Fury.
Sorry, that was supposed to be Signal Corp, not Command Group. Mostly for White Shore Plain/Samurai's Fury/Signal Corp/dump your fate hand for force.
That's legal too.
Three Stones River....
Is Three Stones River a Delayed Terrain or Imediate Terrain?
Page 4. Terrains which say they take effect when played are Immediate, otherwise they're Delayed. Three-Stone River is Delayed.
(Trivia: Battlefield of Shallow Graves is both!)
(JEFF) Several cuestions on several cards
Hi, I want to ask a bucnh of questions that have appeard in our playgroup:
1.- Can a card affected by Sysh be affected by another Sysh or copie of it (Of One mind, egg of Pan“ku) or is only a one time effect (like Norikazu exp 2)
Multiple Syshes are legal. This is the general rule.
2.- If a force number is changed to another number (shosuro technique) or changed with another number (energy Transference) and the second number is higher, is this considered a force bonus?
Yes. [AOF rulebook p. 31]
3.- If I play with the Prophecies of Uikku and Doom of the Dark Lord Prophecies of Uikku While the Prophecies are in play, you and your cards are not affected by any Doom events. This has no effect on events that have already resolved. Reaction: This Personality gains a 2F/3C bonus until the end of your next turn when a Doom event resolves.
To have my cards not to be destroyed by the Doom when I have no more fate cards, i must have a Prophecies in play by the time the doom resolves adn keep the same prhpecies all the time along, yes?
Yes.
4.- If I play a combined Fear effect (adding the fear effect of 2 cards in the same unit) can this effect by affecte by Face of Fear?
Yes.
5.- Can Soshi Eiji be played against a Ikiryo? Eiji cannot be played againts variable losses, but is the loss of Ikiryo fixed by the personality wich holds it?
Eiji's action can be used, because it's known beforehand what the loss from the Ikiryo would be.
6.- How does the Great Climb interact with bowed and unbowed spells and items?
The rule prohibiting bowed cards from taking actions is not lifted by The Great Climb. You may not bow a card to produce a Ranged Attack normally during the battle and then shoot again from a bowed position when this Terrain resolves.
Just a stupid question...
Is an "Inexperienced" Personality considered "Experienced" ?
No.
Soul of… Question
"Soul of..." Question
Kitsune Shudo is aligned to Yoritomo's Alliance. Kitsune Ryukan (soul of Kitsune Shudo) is not.
For the purposes of building a Gold legal deck, if I use 3xKitsune Shudo does he keep his Y.A. alignment?
No. He is played as Kitsune Ryukan in every way.
Q about Tsukune ascends
Hi!
I have a question regarding Tsukune Ascends... Do personalities not already in play also gain the bonusses? Like with the ki-rin shrine or Bayushi (what's his name) the scorp. champ.
None of these cards affect Personalities who aren't in play.
The reason you see extra honor gained due to Ki-Rin's Shrine Exp and Bayushi Yojiro Exp2 is that they raise Personal Honor a fraction of a second before honor is gained, not because they raise it while people are still in your deck.
Naval Invasion (To Someone Official )
Naval Invasion If every Personality and Follower in only one army has the Naval trait, then immediately after that battle is chosen for resolution, the Naval army's leader may elect to make the battle a naval invasion.
Does this mean every personality and follower you have?(Army) or does it mean a unit?(A personality and it's followers)
It means what it says: "every Personality and Follower in only one army". There are at most two armies in any given battle: the Attacker's and the Defender's. Those are the only two players who have the authority to declare a battle a naval invasion, but their entire army, including allying units, must be Naval to do so. (Yes, this means your allies can sabotage your plans by assigning non-naval units. "Only a friend can betray you." --Bayushi's _Lies_)
The stronghold City of Lightning refers to units. If it means units then this is a fantastic new mechanic. If it means army then it's totally worthless because it will never get to that point and therefore never see play.
Any Naval keyword will work, including one printed on a card itself. It does not have to be the one granted by the Stronghold.
