Jeff Alexander, sent 2 March 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

That wacky Hachi (and submissions)

Just a couple quick questions. We know that XP Yasuki Hachi (An Oni's Fury) can be overlayed over Yasuki Hachi (Gold Edition), and we know that Yasuki Hachi (Gold Edition) counts as Daidoji Hachi (Spirit Wars).

They count against each other for deck construction. That's it.

So can XP Yasuki Hachi (An Oni's Fury) be overlayed over Daidoji Hachi (Spirit Wars)?

No.

Also, I know that if I have a good card idea and want it to even be CONSIDERED as an actual card, I have to submit card ideas to AEG (specifically, to Dave Williams, and with the boilerplate that can be found all over the place at Deathseeker), and that it's useless if I post it on the list and THEN send it to them. My question is, can I send AEG a big wad of card ideas, with boilerplate and everything, then post the ideas in a public forum at a later date? And if so, how long would I have to wait?

Honestly, we'd prefer if it never happened, since any public appearance of ideas can be used as grounds of a claim that we derived cards from said appearance.

So, "this battle" ALWAYS means "the current battle". In addition, it ALSO means "the battle this card is in" when such a phrase makes sense for the type of card it's on.

I do appreciate the clarification, but that was not wuite what I was getting at. What I am wondering is some personalities have the "current battle" phrase on them. Should I interpret it the same as if they had the "this battle" phrase, or are they completely different? Thank you for your help.

A card with the phrase "the current battle" on it does NOT need to be in the current battle for that action to be legal.

Hoshi Wayan exp2

Can I make a follow-up clarification? I thought the ruling on Wayan is the duration of Wayan's bonus is the same as the original force bonus?

Wrong card. That's the ruling on Hoshi Wayan non-Experienced, who "gains an identical bonus to that just gained by [an] opposing Personality". By card text, Wayan's bonus was ruled to be identical in all aspects, including duration as well as amount.

Hoshi Wayan Exp2 instead has the ability to increase bonues that he himself receives. That increase is temporary.

Does raising an existing force bonus count for the same force bonus or is it a separate force bonus on its own?

Raising another bonus does not count as applying a new one. [AOF rulebook p. 31]

When I use Snow Crane tat to boost an existing focus card by 2, it still counts as a single focus with only its numeric value boosted up a notch, does this work the same way with Wayan's force boost increase which in effect only increases the original force bonus' numerical value?

It works the same way.

Geisha Assassin question

Does Geisha Assassin temporarily create a personality that you control? If so, it's presumably Human (since no trait makes it Nonhuman). Would it then gain the benefit of any Fortress of the Dragonfly or Ki-Rin's Shrine (exp.) you have in play?

Yes, yes, yes.
