A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Iaijutsu action targets
May you use Iaijutsu Art and Iaijutsu Lesson to target your own Personalities? Iaijutsu Challenge has a ruling which prohibits this, but Art and Lesson do not (that I have found).
Two of your own Personalities cannot challenge each other or enter duels against one another.
(Jeff) Monkey Clan Trait
Has there been any decisions made on the Monkey Clan = Toturi's Army (for open purposes) ?
Yes. It will be in the next rulebook.
Sun Kites Q
Sun Kites +0/+0,0G,2F Nemuranai Reaction: Bow and destroy Sun Kites before a Ranged Attack destroys one or more cards in this unit (including this Personality) to produce a Ranged Attack of equal strength targetting one Personality or Follower which contributed to the orginal Ranged Attack. This may target a Personality with Followers.
Question is, by the wording of the card, the Sun Kites ranged attack goes off before the orginal one. Is the orginal ranged attack therefore affected by the Sun Kites attack.
No. [AOF rulebook p. 45]

Assuming your own Personality is also Human, no, since there are no legal targets for it.
Jeff, Doesn't the card actually do a global effect and affect all the cards in both armies and then chooses the one with the lowest honor? (Smart card.) The person only targets when there is a tie. Text: Battle:Send home the Human Personality in this battle with the lowest Personal Honor (you choose in the case of a tie), without bowing the personality.
It's targeted because it is not global. It does not affect "each", "all", or "every" Personality that matches certain criteria. It targets the unit sent home regardless of whether there's a tie.
The "Smart Cards" ruling has nothing to do with targeting.
overconfidence questions
Overconfidence works when is played ?: 1 - Domotai + Charge
Yes. Charge, by its own text, gives Domotai a 3F bonus. It does not matter if his net Force rises the full 3 points.
2 - Domotai + Test of Might + focus (hidden bonus >= 3)
Only by someone who knows that the bonus was large enough.
3 - Domotai + Test of Might + focus, when I have Ring of Fire in play (I see the focus value)
Yes. The focus bonus is public knowledge here.
4 - Domotai (1/3) + Charge (Domotai 3/3)+ (I pass) + Charge (Domotai 3/3) + (I pass) + Iaijutsu duel (focus are revealed and 4 chi bonus total for Domotai, who becomes 7/7 until the end of duel (from the 3/3 at the beggining of the duel). May I play Overconfidence?
No. The bonus was already present.
Test of Might Question
If I recall correctly, during a duel a focus is considered a chi bonus, hence why many characters who cannot increase their chi specifically say they can focus in a duel. So I would assume that during a Test of Might, a focus is considered a force bonus, right?
Right.
So then how does this interact during a battle at a province in which Yamaso no Oni is present? Can no one focus?
People can focus. It will simply not add to the Force of attacking Personalities.
Superior Strategist
I have problems with Superior Strategist card text: Battle: Target one of your Personalities with the Tactician trait in this battle who has not used the trait during this battle. Get an Open or Battle Action card from your Fate deck and play the card. THIS is considered the target's use of the Tactician trait for this battle. Shuffle the deck.
When EXACTLY is considered I'm using Tactician?
The action of playing Superior Strategist is a use of Tactician.
This is important when it interacts with 'Lion Scout', 'Luring Tactics' and an oponent's 'Fall on your Knees' (cancelling Lion Scout):
Lion Scout: Reaction: Bow when one of your Lion Clan Personalities uses the Tactician trait. The Personality may use the trait one additional time this battle, but it must be a use he or she did not use previously this battle. Fall on Your Knees: Reaction: Play this card when a player plays a Reaction during the Battle Action Segment. Cancel that Reaction.
I don't see what the problem is. You play Sup. Strat., you react with your own Lion Scout, and your opponent cancels the Scout's Reaction with Fall On Your Knees. It seems straightforward to me.
more questions
1) Energy Transference: Open: Bow this Shugenja to switch a Personality's Force and Chi. If the Personality is not yours, destroy this Spell.
Last clause is a cost or an effect ? i.e. If Imperial edicts cancel it (when I target another player personality) the spell is destroyed?
By past ruling, it's a cost.
2) Golden Obi of the Sun Goddess: Unique Only a Personality with over 2 Personal Honor can attach the Golden Obi of the Sun Goddess. Battle: Once per battle, bow an opposing Shadowlands card. Reaction: When this Personality would be destroyed, destroy the Golden Obi of the Sun Goddess instead.
May I use the Reaction during battle resolution?
If your Personality is destroyed, yes.
What happens with the personality?
It survives, and neither the Personality nor the Obi count towards figuring out how much Honor your opponent gains from the battle, since neither is destroyed by the resolution of the battle. Other cards attached to the Personality are still destroyed since the whole unit is dying.
post for 20 February 2002-domotai
Ok, this brings up a strange question. Does this mean that Matsu Domotai is completely screwed in a Test of Might?
Not completely. You can focus a 2...or two 1s...
In other words, Is his focussing in a Test of might subject to his own maximum, thus, to his own Chi? Barring any bonuses to his chi, 3?
It is subject to his maximum, yes.

What if Nakamuro Exp. redirects a duel back to a personality in the opposing players army?
Nakamuro still cannot redirect a challenge to another Personality controlled by the player who controls the challenger.
War Paints question
I must bow a ratling shugenja and another ratling personality, I suppose that the ratling shugenja must be in the battle,
He does not.
but can I bow one of my ratlings personalities in the fief or in another battle? If not, how does it exactly works?
As long as you satisfy Presence, Relevance, and card text, you're fine. In this case:
A) Either the shugenja or the other Ratling must be in the current battle, and
B) The other Ratling must be in an army opposing the other targeted unit.
Any arrangement that satisfies both these conditions is a legal use of the card.
Kwanchai and Shosuro tech
"Kwanchai and Shosuro Tech are both extremely good cards, but with the new targetting rules they don't combine that well anymore. If Kwanchai bows to replace somebody in a duel, you cannot use Shosuro Tech because it targets both duelists (and Kwanchai is bowed). It worked before Gold, but not anymore..."
This is cut & pasted from another site, but I wanted to know if this is true?
It's true.
Revering the Past?
If this event resolves before you have a body you can legally attach your ancestor to. Can you get your ancestor and add it to your fate hand without playing it, avoiding the honor loss OR if I get the ancestor to avoid the honor loss would I need to discard it as I can't attach it?
The latter.
You only need to get an Ancestor from your deck to avoid the Honor loss. [card text]
In general, any time you are told to get a card from either deck and immediately play it, you must discard it if it is unplayable. You may not keep a Fate card gained this way in your hand.
Mantis Ho [AEG]
Kitao does not deserve to be the Champion.
That doesn't mean she can't be.
