Jeff Alexander, sent 21 February 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

passing

is passing a action?

No.

Rules question

I've got a bowed personality in play with 1 PH, my opponent ambushes him with a 2PH (human) guy...Can I play Return for Training?

Assuming your own Personality is also Human, no, since there are no legal targets for it.

Tsuno Takuma Question

"Takuma has the Tactician trait while it as one or more Tactician tokens. Takuma loses a Tactician token each time it sues the Tactician trait."

Battle: "If Takuma is opposed and has no Tactician tokens, gain a tactician token."

APC Rulebook (sorry, no AoF starters yet ):

". . .Such personalities have the Tactician trait. Their controller may, as a Battle action once per battle per Tactician, target the Tactician and discard a card from his or her hand to raise the Tactician's Force by the card's Focus value until the turn ends. . ."

This may be a dumb question, but you never know. Now, as I see it Takuma is NOT a tactician when he enters battle, he's only a tactician while he has a token on him. So, when he gains the token, he's a tactician, when he uses the token, he no longer has the tactician trait, he may then gain another token because he would be still opposed and have no tokens left.

Correct.

Now my question is, in the space between being a Tactician (gain a token), then not being (use the token), and becoming a Tactician again (gain another token), is he the same tactician?

He is the same Personality. That's all that matters.

Essentially, my question in a nutshell is does Takuma's ability allow him to essentially Tactician your whole hand?

No. That'd be just a little too good.

Nagori and Yogo Tjeki Question

Can you Winds Truth your honor loss then use your Nagori on your opponents honor loss?

Yes.

Can you use Yogo Tjeki on yourself if you are above your starting family honor, Winds Truth it to your opponent, then Nagori their honor loss? Even if they are below their starting family honor?

Tjeki's loss cares about who it finally applies to after it's finished being redirected (even if it's redirected more than once), not who it's originally aimed at. Wind's Truth-ing Tjeki's loss onto a low-Honor player from another is no different from using Tjeki on that player in the first place.

Duel casualties with Followers

You have two Personalities in battle (one of which has a Follower attached). The Personality with the Follower is destroyed in a duel. Does the Follower die as well or does he attach to the other Personality (assuming that it is otherwise legal to attach the Follower)?

When a card leaves play in any way, all cards attached to it leave play in the exact same way, and all tokens on it (including Follower tokens) are removed from the game entirely. [AOF rulebook pp. 60-61]

Norikazu and blackened sky

recently i asked about reactions being taken with blackened sky and if there was an answer i never saw it in emails. can Norikazu's reaction be taken with blackened sky or can only the person playing blackened sky not take reactions

By MRP, Blackened Sky only prohibits its player from taking general-purpose Reactions.

Does this mean that Yoritomo Aramasu may still enter play while Yoritomo Kitao is in play? I know that she doesn't discard Yoritomo Aramasu, but I'd just like a little clarification.

The Rules Team is currently working on this one.

So, Jeff...any ruling yet on this?

Moving and Resolved Battles

Can you move a unit into a resolved battle?

In general, yes.

If so, what happens if the unit is an attacking unit once the attack phase is over? Does the unit go home bowed?

Attacking and allied units still at any Provinces go home bowed at the end of the last battle of that attack.

Combined Range Attack question

If a shugenja has Fire from Within attached and the Fox Nagamaki attached, can he bow to cast the spell and bow the nagamaki to make a combined range attack?

Yes.

Tsuno Takuma Question

Where would these archives be?

http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/

seppuku question

Is seppuku considered an action, a reaction or something else all together? If its a reaction can it be cancelled with fall to your knees?

The rulebook-provided seppuku response Samurai can take to being involved in an honor loss is not an action or Reaction. [AOF rulebook p. 64] Seppuku in general is a special kind of death with extra rules surrounding it; it's not an action either.

It is not. Changes to printed numbers need to be explicitly worded as such. Most bonuses do not change the printed value.

Permanent changes to Personal Honor do change the printed value, correct? (Last Gift, a Samurai's win from For the Empire, etc)

Not correct. A permanent change is just that: permanent. In other words, it lasts for the rest of the game. How long a change lasts has nothing to do with whether it applies to printed or current value.

As a corollary, though, you can redirect an ally's Iaijutsu Duel: If the ally chooses your personality as one of the duelists, you can bump it to one of the allying personalities instead.

Correct.

Maximums and minimums are applied last, after all bonuses and penalties are added. [AOF rulebook pp. 31-32] Domotai with a Charge played on him is a 3/3. Domotai with a second Charge played on him (which is legal) is still a 3/3. If, somehow, he finds himself with a brand new Wakizashi (+1C) during the battle, he'll become a 4/4.

Say this Domotai finds himself in a duel, where his focus values total 6 (thrown two 3's as focuses). Between revealing the focus values and duel resolution, he becomes 7/10 (1 base + 3 + 3 (2 Charges) / 3 base + 1 Wakizashi + 6 Focuses)?

Correct.

Yogo Question.

The text on this stronghold (Towers of the Yogo) reads: All of your Scorpion Personalities have the ability "BATTLE: Bow this personality. Bow an opposing Follower or Personality without attached Followers." <<Seems to me this means you could bow your guys even if there is no opposing personalities, from the way this reads. Is this true?

No. As a targeted action, it cannot be taken if some of the required targets are missing.
