Jeff Alexander, sent 7 February 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Strict Gold????? Jeff Alexander??

as orocon will be strict gold. are there any gold legal card which will not be legal, excluding " evil feeds upon itself "?

Evil Feeds is not "Gold legal but excluded". It's not Gold legal. Period.

The standard rules will be used. All Gold-bugged cards will be legal except promotional cards which weren't released until after An Oni's Fury went on sale. That includes Zokusei, Kuso, and Where Respect Is Due. Celebration and A Perfect Cut were released well prior to the Herald, so they'll be legal. Also legal are:

Akasha Dark Oracle of Earth Welcome Home Hunting Tiger Isawa's Last Wish The Power Resides in the Mountains The Council Reforms Imperial Assembly Chiang-Tsu

Come One at a Time Question

So to summarize:

Come One At A Time as an immediate terrain, gives the ability to all attackers to issues challenges,

You mean "to send one of their attacking units home".

and to all defenders to bow and send home personalities.

You mean "to issue an unrefusable challenge if theirs is the only defending unit".

It does not create a separate "subphase" in which said effects transpire.

Correct?

Except for flipping the options, correct.

Mushin and Reaction timing

I am not sure about this anymore. This is the NEW text of blackened sky:

Battle: Take as many consecutive actions that make ranged attacks as you like, before the next player takes an Open or Battle action. You cannot take Reactions during this time unless they make ranged attacks.

I think you can take reactions, because the card says you can.

IF those Reactions create Ranged Attacks in and of themselves. The new wording still does not allow Reactions that modify Ranged Attacks.

Rules Question - Kuon exp & 20 Goblin Winter

Just a quick rules question -

If I have a Hida Kuon exp in play, along with a plethora of 1F followers attached to crab peeps (for the purposes of this lets call them farmlands followers).

Now Twenty Goblin Winter resolves, giving all the farmlands followers +1F (up to 2F each now). This brings them all in range of getting Kuon exp's bonus putting them all at 3F each.

Now my question is when the window of effect for Twenty Goblin Winter expires (Until the start of your next turn....) will the force of all these followers return to being just 1 or will it remain at two (remembering that due to both bonuses being active at no time do the followers drop to being 1F, as when the effect of the event ends the force of the followers is still above 1F, thanks to Kuon exp's bonus)?

Kuon Exp. only boosts Followers who have more than 1F without the help of his bonus.

Energy Transference and chi bonuses

If I have a 2/4 personality (Yasuki Hachi for instance), and 2 Fortress of The Dragonfly in play, Yasuki is 2/6, ok... but what happens if I use Energy Transference on him ? Does he become 6/2, or 4/4 ?

He was a 2/6, so he'll become a 6/2. [AOF rulebook pp. 32, 42]

Favor "abuse" (correction)

(correction made in the order of steps in the Favor scenario)

This question concerns the ability of Doji Tanitsu: "Political Open: Bow Tanitsu to take the Imperial Favor. This is not considered lobbying."

Q: With 3 Tanitsus in play, is it possible/legal for a player to acquire the Favor four times during his turn (3 Tanitsus plus a normal Lobby) and discard it five times during that turn if he starts the turn holding it?

Yes and yes.

If the answer to the question is "Yes", and assuming Sezaru is the Wind being used, should it then be possible to draw five extra cards during the End Phase?

Yes.

Or, if three Kiyomis and a Miya Yemi are in play, is the following sequence legal upon beginning an Action Phase with the Favor?

1. Bow Yemi and discard the Favor, +3 Honor 2. Bow 1st Tanitsu to take the Favor. 3. Discard Favor for an extra card 4. Bow 2nd Tanitsu to take the Favor. 5. Repeat #3 (2nd extra card) 6. Bow 3rd Tanitsu to take the Favor. 7. Repeat #3 (3rd extra card) 8. Bow any other Personality to Lobby for the Favor. 9. Reaction: Bow three Kiyomis, +3 Honor (+6 total) 10. Repeat #3 (4th extra card)

Final result: +6 Honor and four extra cards during the End Phase.

Yes.

That silly Kitao... / Aramasu & Kitao Q > > Kitao Exp kills all copies of Baysuhi Aramasu in play, and won't

All right. A question came up on #l5r and even though I think I know the answer to it, I'd like an answer from the Rules Guys...

(And I've already checked the Accumulated Rulings...it's not in there...)

Yoritomo Kitao Mantis Clan Champion*Samurai*Naval*Experienced*Unique When Kitao enters play, discard all copies of Bayushi Aramasu. Bayushi Aramasu may not enter play while Kitao is in play. Open: Spend 3 Gold to allow a unit to assign as Cavalry until the end of turn.

Now, I went back and snagged this from the ruling on October 30th, 2001. -------------- allow you >to play them anymore... >Is Yoritomo Aramasu (Exp3) still legal? Or is he considered Bayushi Aramasu >all the same, albeit with another name?

The way Kitao is worded, any Personality who's name isn't "Bayushi Aramasu" is safe. --------------

Does this mean that Yoritomo Aramasu may still enter play while Yoritomo Kitao is in play? I know that she doesn't discard Yoritomo Aramasu, but I'd just like a little clarification.

The Rules Team is currently working on this one.

Judgement of Toshiken questions

Apologies all if this has been asked to death already, but I have a couple of questions about judgement of toshiken...

Judgement of Toshiken 0G 2FV Reaction: Play this card after players reveal Focus cards in a duel. Resolve the duel only by the Chi (or other stat noted on the card creating the duel) of the dueling Personalities before the challenge, plus the Focus cards' printed Focus values. The Double Chi trait works as usual. If either Personality has not focused, each can focus an extra time, starting with the challenged Personality.

1) Poisoned weapon... Had a bit of an arguement about this with someone last night. As far as _I_ read the cards, Poisoned weapon will take effect - killing anyone on chi+focus values <4 BEFORE duel resolution (by the wording on poisoned weapon). Also (as stated in the the accumulated rulings) the poison will continue to give -3 chi for the rest of the turn after the duel.

However, the actual duel resolution will be worked out without the poisoned weapons effect (as the chi used is read prior to the challenge).

All correct.

(This is with the obvious exception of the effects of a poisoned weapon from a duel earlier in the turn, which end up affecting the personalities chi before the current duel - but somehow I think this is complicating the issue overmuch...).

I wouldn't call that "obvious". :)

2) Bend Like a Reed... This IS cancelled by JoT, right? Although it does say to add chi as if a focus, this isn't an actual "Focus Card" as called for by JoT.

When used for its Reaction, Bend Like A Reed is not played as a Focus card. It will not add to the total that Judgement of Toshiken cares about.

Ah ok, but will AEG actually accept them?

Yes.
