A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Silence and Hida Technique
It was probably asked a long time ago when the cards first showed up, but if I target Silence with the Hida Technique, does he permanently gain +2 force? And if he has Kaimetsu-Uo's Ono attached, is it then +3 permanently? I think the answer is fairly obvious, but I just want to double check.
Yes and yes.
post for 24 January 2002 / questions
It´s legal to move rekai into a battle with no units, using her ability. ?
It's legal as long as you satisfy Presence and Relevance. She's legal if you
* either have a unit in the current battle already or are moving one of your own into it, and you
* use, target, or affect a card already in the current battle, or move one in
Um, Jeff? Unless I'm mistaken, if there are no units in the battle, then Rekai has no one to shoot, and therefore cannot use her action (not having a target). Granted, if *you control* no units at a battle, but there are opposing units there, she can move in and shoot, but I think that was not what the original poster was asking.
That's what I get for answering things too fast.
I was thinking of Isawa RIAKE when I wrote that, not Daidoji REKAI.
Daidoji Rekai can't use her move-and-shoot ability to move into a battle unopposed because her action demands a target for the ranged attack effect and it's illegal to use it without one.
Season of the Crane
What's the release date for Season of the Crane? From all the tourney postings, I get the impression that it's very soon, if it hasn't already happened.
It's already happened.
Question on Chi bonuses?
Do the chi bonus you get from entering and/or focusing during a duel last til the end of the turn opr the end of the duel?
End of the duel, as per the rulebook.
Ki-Rin's Shrine
Can someone tell me when then +1 personal honor bonus is applied, before or after I bring a personality into play??
It applies as soon as the Personality enters play, and before you collect Personal Honor if you paid full price.
Herald subscription via the website
I was just going to the website to renew my subscription to the Herald, but it seems like the interface only accounts for new subscriptions.
Does it even really matter if I renew or get a new sub.?
Two questions
These questions came up during the course of play last night.
Yogo Tjeki Limited: Bow to make a player lose 2 Honor. This loss cannot reduce a player below his or her starting Honor.
Can Tjeki's ability be used after a player has already been reduced below their starting Honor?
No. (Okay, okay. Technical answer: yes, but there is no loss.)
Second question involves Poisoned Weapon and Fortress of the Dragonfly. If a personality with 2 Chi is hit with a poisoned weapon and has 2 Fortress of the Dragonflies in play, do they die immediately or does the FotD save them?
If he's 2C WITH the Fortresses, then yes, he'll die. If he's 2C without the Fortresses, then he's 4C with them, and the Poisoned Weapon only takes him to 1C, so he lives.
Street to street
I need some information about this card. If a follower is detached is he still in the battle?
They are still at the battle and in armies, but they are not in units (not even one-card units).
(i have a spearman attached to a personality and my oponent plays Street to Street, can i still bow the spearman for a ranged attack?)
Yes. However, you cannot combine that ranged attack with any other cards, since you can only combine attacks within a unit.
Battle Resolution question
Greetings to all
I was re-reading the Gold Edition rulebook and came across this paragraph that I never noticed on p58:
"If this is the very last battle of the Attack Phase, any attacking and allied units that moved into other provinces and are still there go home bowed now as well."
This got my gears turning, and I came up with a scenario that my group may have been handling incorrectly:
Stefan attacks Paul with all of his units on one province. Clearly, he has only one choice for which battle to resolve first.
As has been pointed out, there is a battle at every single one of the Defender's Provinces. The Attacker chooses which order they resolve in, and must eventually choose all of them before the Attack Phase can end. Nothing forces the Attacker to resolve battles where units assigned before ones where they didn't.
The rule you found is a failsafe to ensure that attacking cards can't work around the long march home by sneakily avoiding any real fighting.
Golden Obi of the Sun Goddess
Just a quick question. Are all attached cards destroyed when the Golden Obi is triggered. For example a personality with the Obi and a Dragon's Claw Katana dies during resolution. Does he or she lose the Dragon's Claw and just the personality survives or is the destruction considered to have not happened? Same question with followers.
The Obi destroys itself to negate the destruction of the Personality. If only the Personality was being destroyed (say, due to Kolat Assassin or losing a duel), this will keep every card attached to her safe. If the entire unit was being destroyed (like with To Do What We Must, or from losing a battle), all the other cards still die.
Shadowlands Horde
Another question: If I pay for Tsuburu no Oni and I dont have any other personality in play, can I bring him out? Or do I absolutely NEED someone else already built to be destroyed before he can come out?
It's worded as a cost in the Most Recent Printing: "You must destroy one of your Personalities to bring Tsuburu no Oni into play." You can't play the Oni if you don't destroy someone.
Kyuden Hida
Can you draw the extra card if you payed for the follower while the stronghold is bowed?
Actions on cards and Strongholds cannot be used if the card or Stronghold is bowed. [AOF rulebook p. 24] No.
Revearing the past Question
When this even resolves and two players want to attach the same ancestor, who has first option? Does the player with the event go first or does it start with the player to the left?
The active player decides the order of this Event's effects for all players.
Koku Questions
1) Are FK boosters still worth 2 Koku?
Yes.
2) Are the mis-backed SW cards still worth Koku? If so, how much?
Yes. Three each.
3) Is Dinari usable for Koku redemption?
Dinari, Plunder, and Ghost Rock are exchangable for Koku.
Rules question: Doji Nagori
If Nagori has the Diplomatic Apprentice attached to him, can he and the Apprentice bow to cause a 3 point honor loss from Suspicions? (1 from Suspicions, 1 from Nagori, 1 from the Apprentice)
Each printed Reaction is usable once per trigger. [AOF rulebook p. 48]. A Diplomatic Apprentice does not allow the same Political Reaction to be used multiple times against one singular circumstance. You have to use the Diplomat alone on the first trigger, then use the Personality (or another Diplomat) on another one later.
Spirits and Thunders
Hey everybody.
Two quick questions:
1) Shrine of the Spirits has a line that says "Your events do not resolve." So Itok this to mean that a spirit player's events would have no effect. But someone told me otherwise so I'm just wondering who's right.
Not only do they have no effect, but they don't even stop other players' copies from resolving later that same game.
2) Do things that affect the Thunders affect all versions of them? (e.g. The Hooded Ronin Exp.)
No. Only cards that are actually Thunder cards by the Keyword Rule.
