A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Quick Rules Question:
If you discard a "Burning Your Essence" or a "Let The Spirit Guide You" to use "Know The Enemy", is the focus value 0 or the modified focus?
0 for Burning Your Essence, modified for Let Your Spirit Guide You. LYSGY gives the higher value for any use of the Tactician trait, whereas BYE is only a 6 when used for a Tactician Force bonus (or an ability printed or copied onto the Personality card).
Sacrificial Altar Question
Can I play Lies, Lies, Lies if I have a Sacrificial Altar in play?
Lies, Lies, Lies "Political Limited: If you have less than your starting Family Honor and you control no Kolat, Ninja, or Shadowlands cards, or cards that cause you an Honor loss when played, either gain 8 Honor or raise your Family Honor to your starting Family Honor, whichever gains you less Honor" Sacrificial Altar Bow the Sacrificial Altar and destroy one of your Personalities or Followers to produce an amount of Gold equal to twice the Personality's or Follower's Force. Lose an amount of Honor equal to the Personality's or Follower's Force It doesn't cause an honor loss when brought into play, so I would say no, but I would like some clarification. Thanks.
I think you mean "yes". Yes, you can play Lies, Lies, Lies, since the Altar doesn't fit into any of the categories of cards that invalidate it.
Question
Okay, so where would I sign up for these clan lists? Or are they something that comes with um, an Imperial membership or whatnot?
AEG doesn't run any Clan-specific discussion forums.
Hataki, NEW QUESTION
I don't see any reason why not. Come to think of it, is there any reason why he can't move into an Ambush on another of your Personalities?
Yes. The text of Ambush prohibits it.
Soshi Tishi + Bayushi House Guard
During our league last night, this issue came up. While at the time I did not have a new version of the BHG with me, I went ahead and allowed the combo to work until I could get a definative answer. The player said that the new version of the BHG allowed for Tishi where the old version did not.
If Soshi Tishi has the Bayushi House Guard attached, will he take the -1 chi that accompanies his Reaction? After reading the Gold version, I say no but would like confirmation.
The Bayushi House Guard negates Tishi's -1C as of Gold Edition.

Do the chi bonus you get from entering and/or focusing during a duel last til the end of the turn opr the end of the duel?
End of the duel, as per the rulebook.
This brings me to a question. If both personalities in a duel have focused, the focus value immediately adds to the character's chi, correct?
Correct. [AOF rulebook p. 61]
Therefore, if a personality with printed chi of 3 and a focus value of at least 1 when focuses are revelaed in the duel has Poisoned Weapon played on them which reduces their chi by 3, they will not die before the resolution of the duel?
Correct. And if he survives the duel, he will die immediately after the duel ends when the focus bonus wears off but Poisoned Weapon's penaly is still present.
Yes. However, you cannot combine that ranged attack with any other cards, since you can only combine attacks within a unit.
Could you still use Arrows from the Woods to raise the strength of the ranged attack? Is that considered "combining"?
It's still legal. It's not combining.
Soshi Tishi + Bayushi House Guard
Actually, I have that backwards. If it never took place it is canceled. If it takes place with no effect, it is negated. :)
You're looking at things the wrong way. Canceling is something which can only be done to entire actions. Negating is something which can only be done to effects.
So, Jeff, is this an example of the BHG negating the "-1C" or canceling it?
Negating.

Soooo, the poisoned weapon doesn't count against the chi of the person for the duel?
It does count.
To clarify, if two personalities with 3 chi get into a duel, both focus a value of two, then the challenged strikes, the challenger plays poisoned weapon. Does the reduction in chi happen immediately?
Yes.
thus the final results of the duel end up being: Challenger 5/ Challenged 2? Meaning the challenger won the duel.
Correct.

Heh heh heh. Evil thought... If you're playing Open, and Moon and Sun allows Suspicions to resolve a second time, then you can use Nagori + Diplomatic Apprentice. Nagori reacts and the Diplomatic Apprentice bows for one instance, and then Nagori reacts and bows for the second. Nasty.
Perfectly legal.
Rules question: Chime of Harmony
Chime of Harmony: "The Chime of Harmony gains +3C while this Personality attaches Spells, creates Spell effects, and uses innate abilities."
Let's say I put this on Mirumoto Tsuge: "Once per turn, after Tsuge issues a challenge, draw a card."
I issue a challenge and draw a card, at which time Mirumoto Tsuge gets a +3 Chi. However, since this is only "while this Personality ... uses innate abilities", will he still have the +3 Chi in the duel itself, or only while I am drawing a card?
Only while drawing the card. Enjoy your short-lived bonus.
Shiro Mirumoto Qtn.
I was reading through the digest and thought up a question. If you have the Ring of Void in play, and use the special ability on the Shiro Mirumoto stronghold, do you draw only one card, or can you draw 5? If only one, not great, but with 5, that can get very sickly. First, empty your hand, then refill and attack. Thanks!
The Ring of the Void can only provide its benefit during the End Phase, by its own text.
