Jeff Alexander, sent 16 January 2002 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

But that brings up another question: is Kitsune Gohei undead (being a "member of the lurching dead" sort of implies being undead - or is there a difference)?

He is not Undead. Go by what's on the card.

Poet Question

Is the Poet trait synonomis with the Courtier trait?

No. Only Diplomat is equivalent to Courtier.

Shosuro Gardens and Bowed Personalitys

Can you use the Shosuro Gardens to redirect an Action to one of your bowed personalitys.

Yes. When redirecting, you are bound only by the action's originator's targeting requirements.

Hoshi's Claw Q

The Claw is still usable. The Personality received a +0 bonus.

What happens if the card focused is Another Time, and the duel does not resolve. Does the bonus still occur?

Yes, since the focusing bonus begins immediately and Another Time does not end the duel until it's revealed.

Iaijutsu Art question

Art says the duel is unrefuseable and you may focus only once. So when it is played on my personality and I focus one card, am I required then to announce strike after the player of the Art focuses?

"Each Personality focuses exactly once, if possible, and Reactions taken 'instead of focusing' cannot be taken." [Iaijutsu Art, Gold Edition]

The only things you can do in a duel are "focus" and "strike" [rulebook]. If you have already focused, you may not do so again [Iaijutsu Art's text]. That leaves only one option: striking.

Poisoned Weapon and other questions

Well, I hope you rules people had a nice holiday (for those who take some)

First question

Poisoned Weapon If focuses are a Chi bonus, what's the exact timing of poisoned weapon, and how long the Chi bonuses of focuses endure, if the duel was not to the death?

Poisoned Weapon's penalty begins when it is played, which is between the strike and duel resolution, and lasts until the end of the turn. Focussing's bonus begins when the card is focused and lasts only until the end of the duel.

Second one

Bayushi Kaukatsu, soul of Goshiu It says, after you lose honor, make another player loose the same amout of honor. What s the source of the second honor loss, Kaukatsu himself or the original one? And can the loss be redonne say if my opponent got an egg of Pan Ku of my Kaukatsu/Goshiu?

Kaukatsu is the source of the second loss. Any number of Kaukatsu reactions can be taken after a single loss, if you have a way of putting multiple Kaukatsus into play or giving his ability to multiple Personalities. Your opponent may use his own Kaukatsu on a loss caused to him by your Kaukatsu.

Simply put, Otomo Motoshi and a Shadowlands player, can he enter play, without gaining any shadowlands trait

He will not gain the trait. The Shadowlands Faction does not have a trait that means "a member of the Shadowlands Faction", so there is no trait that he can gain. Not only that, but his effect counts as swearing fealty by his own card text, and most Shadowlands strongholds forbid their Personalities from doing that.

Open question

Hi , I've got a question about bayushi aramoro. In gold rules there is a rule that after a card is discarded you immidiately put a new card on your province.

Yes. Empty Provinces are always refilled as soon as possible.

Does that rule also work in open format.

The Oni's Fury rulebook is the rulebook for all game formats. There are no separate sets of rules for Open and for Strict Gold.

questin on Inner wall

Inner wall reads: Fortification "Battle: Bow one of your defending personalities to bow an opposing follower or an opposing personality with no followers"

Since you don't have to bow the inner wall to use its ability, can you use it more then once; effectivly becoming a yogo towers?

Yes.

personality question

I have been given two conflicting pieces of information and I am curious to which one is correct.

I had a Doji Kurohito and a Doji Kurohito-Experienced. Can I have three of the original and one of the experienced OR is it just three of a personality in a deck regadless of experience level?

You may have three of the original (or only one if the original is Unique) plus one of the Experienced. If an "Experienced 2" version exists, you may also have one of that, and so on. Each Experience level counts separately against the per-card deck construction limits. [AOF rulebook pp. 20 & 26]

Shosuro Gardens

Can I use the Shosuro Gardens abilty to redirect an action to one of my bowed personalitys???

If it could have originally been aimed there by the action's original player, yes.

A test of courage

I have a question about a test of courage.

Would test of courage prevent my unit being sent home due to the Iron Fortress duel effect, after I refuse ? Would I then bow, in the battle ?

You may refuse and then play A Test of Courage to cancel the Stronghold action entirely as it tries to move your unit home. You would not go home, bow, or be dishonored.

If Togashi Genshuo gets a crab tatoo, will he be able to recieve the extra force while defending?

Yes.

Do personaliteis to whom you move Gaijutsu no Shiryo bow, as per normaly attaching an ancestor.

No. Bowing is only a cost of attaching an Ancestor from your hand [AOF rulebook pp. 29-30].

I don't understand how somebody can be moved into a battle if they're already there. That wouldn't be moving. It would be holding still.

It's not illegal in L5R to perform an action even when you know some or all of its effects will do nothing.

Oracle of Fire and Shosuro Higatsuku

A simple question that some heated debate in a tournament over the weekend.

Can the Oracle of Fire be used on Shosuro Higatsuku after he has bowed to start a duel with an opponent? And could the reasoning for the answer please be explained as I would like to be able to pacify both sides of the arguement around here.

Higatsuku has no prohibitions against focussing. The Oracle of Fire does not care if your Personality is challenging or being challenged. There's nothing on either card that would even hint that the combo is illegal.

And related Oracle of Fire questions. In an Iaijutsu Art duel I am assuming that if someone uses the Oracle it counts as that personalities one focus for the duel - can that player then use Kakita Technique to then strike?

Yes. Ow.

It's not that a card can move to where it already is. It's that this effect of her action does not violate the "you can't take a targeted action when you can't pick a target" rule (which DOES prohibit her from moving into a battle with no one opposing her). Thus her action stays legal to perform. The movement effect of it does nothing

The movement effect is unsuccesful or does she actually move from the current battle to the current batlle? (I know, it sounds ridiculous)

It is unsuccessful. There is no movement.

Towers of the Asako

Question:

Now, obviously, in order to cancel an action targetting my shugenja I must have the Towers unbowed. However, when it also says:

Reaction: When an action targets one of your Samurai, bow one of your Shugenja Personalities to cancel it.

So, let's assume I'm being attacked by some guys on the opponents turn. And I have Shiba Aikune and Isawa Taeruko guarding, the towers are bowed. If one of the bad guys throws refugees on Aikune, can I bow Taeruko to cancel it? or does my stronghold need to be unbowed in order to use that ability as well?

The Towers of the Asako must be unbowed to use either of its Reactions.

Mirumoto Uso and Iaijutsu Art

Okay. This is probably a stupid question to ask, but if you use Iaijutsu Art with Mirumoto Uso, is he allowed to focus two cards when he focuses? Just wondering.

Yes. It's one focus, two cards.

Enlightenment in Season of the Crane

An idle question: where on the form for Season of the Crane are we supposed to record the Enlightenment wins that are required for one of the storyline effects? -- Ono-san

Wherever is convenient.

post for 10 January 2002

Well, actually, I thought Tsukune was MRP'd to be back to a trait. In any event, let's use Bayushi Eiyo or someone who has a trait to get Chi bonuses to enter into a duel (I was already aware of the Reaction timing stuff). If Eiyo duels a Crane with much, much higher Chi, can Shosuro Technique be combined with his native Chi bonus to pop his Chi up above the Crane's? (Same question as above, but specifically referring to a a mix of traits and Reactions.)

Traditionally, when traits and Reactions have the same trigger, the traits go into effect first. Eiyo is no more effective with Shosuro Technique than is any other Scorpion.

Season of Shadowlands report (Bordeaux, France)

FYI = In Time of War's text states

For the rest of the game, no player's Family Honor may rise over 5 pts. from what it was when the turn began.

which means if both Suspicians and In Time of War are in play you can regain the lost 1 honor and gain a further 5.

Correct.

Question about Moto Chagatai Exp

Ok the question is about his reaction.

Reaction: Once per turn, when another player moves a unit into or out of the current battle, move one of your Unicorn Clan Personalities into the current battle from any location or from the current battle to another Province

Does sending one of the Chagatai's controllers units home with BSL, Tsudao or similar actions trigger this reaction.

Yes.

eg Chagatai and Zhijuan are at one battle and Huang is at another battle.

Zhijuan is sent home with a Refugees, can Chagatai move Huang into his battle or move over to join Huang?

Yes. Either.

Yoritomo Yukue Exp. and Alliance Question

I'm playing with the Yasuki Palaces SH, and have declared Crane. I bring out Yoritomo Yukue Exp. and during my next action phase I use her ability(Limited: Once per game, bow Yukue as a cost and name a clan other than your own. For the rest of the game while Yukue is in play, Personalities from that clan will join you for 2 less Gold.), and the clan I name is Mantis.

Later, I reveal a face down card during my events phase, it is the event Alliance(Select a clan other than your own. For the remainder of the game, you may recruit Personalities from that clan for 2 fewer gold.), and again I name Mantis.

Now, do all my Mantis Personalities come into play for 4 less gold?

Yes.

Return of the Mantis?

I have a question. If Island Wharf gets 'bugged' will we have to wait 30 days or will it be immediately available for use.

Modifications to reprinted cards go into effect immediately. Only brand-new cards need to wait to become tournament-legal.

Snow Maiden Question

Snow Maiden says gains +1F/+1C for each forest in play

What is a forest card? A Jade card I'm told is any card with the word Jade on it. Therefore, if I have:

3x Forest (Hold) 3x Edge of Shimonen Forest (Fort) 3x Bloodstained Forest (Spell)

Are all of my Snowmaidens now 10F/11C? I've been told that the Spell didnt count. But I wanted to confirm.

Any card with the word "Forest", "Forests", "Forest's", or "Forests'" in its title or boldface traits area is "a forest card". That arrangement would indeed give Yuku no Onna a +9/+9 bonus.
