A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Question on "Current Game State"
Just a quick question on the "current state of the game", as expressed in the so-called "smart cards" ruling. How precisely is the "current state of the game" defined? Is it all cards that are face up on the table?
It's everything known and currently visible by all players.
In regards to action legality, an action is illegal if anything on the table would make it illegal, correct? And an action with multiple effects is illegal, according to the archive, if any one of those effects does not have a legal target, correct?
Correct.
Question: Reactions During Deadly Ground
Okay, so what happens when you throw Ikoma Tsunari (I've forgotten exactly which version) into the mix with her 'ignoring' of terrains?
Then Deadly Ground stops having any power whatsoever, on any player.
Kosaten Shiro question
Actually, all cards that have been re-printed have had the "costs X less for so-and-so" rather than having "costs Y for so-and-so". As the rulings archive says, all cards using the latter format should be treated like the former.
They do? Where? I don't recall a global ruling being made that all "costs X instead of Y" cards are to be read as "costs Z less" cards. The ruling is that this is a reduction and a change if X is less than Y, which is subtly different.
Shiro Ide Question
This subject is being bandied about on the Unicorn list, and I thought it might be good to have the matter settled officially:
Do non-gold producing holdings that cost more than 1 produce one gold when bowed when using Shiro Ide? (i.e., Hawks and Falcons, Kirin Shrine, etc.)
A Holding which lacks any "Bow to produce XXX Gold" capability will still have no way to bow for Gold under Shiro Ide.
AOF question
The text on Natsune no Shiryo includes:
Reduce the Gold costs of all copies you own of Spell cards attached to this personality by this personality's chi, to a minimum of 1.
Does this mean Spell cards being attached to Natsune no Shiryo's personality, or copies of spells attached to said person which are being attached to another shugenja?
Only once a Spell is on his Personality will Natsune reduce the costs of all your Spells with that title.
Rules Questions
1) What is the interaction between Moat and Heimin Village? Does the reduction from Moat happen before or after Heimin Village kicks in?
The active player would determine the order.
Incidentally, the answer here would cover other interactions with Heimin Village and Force reductions.
Only those reductions that try to start applying at the exact same time. The result of a Battle action, say, would not cause any timing conflict with the Village.
2) Shiba Tsukune (inexperienced, inexplicably in Gold) challenges Soshi Angai to a duel. The former Shosuro Techniques going in. Does the 3C bonus happen before the Technique, making the Technique redundant, or afterwards, making it useful?
These are Reactions, so they cannot be simultaneous. The answer depends on which gets played second, which depends on when and whether the players use them. They both have the same trigger (entering the duel), so the player to the left of the active player gets the first option of reacting or not reacting. Things go clockwise from there.
And -- a separate question -- Shosuro Technique does target Angai, correct?
Correct.
post for 9 January 2002
Because Deadly Ground is not yet in effect, could I use " Fall to Your Knees" to cancel the Lion Stronghold effect.
Yes.
Kitsune Gohei & The Face of Fear???
rule question
Kitsune Gohei Battle: Bow to destroy all Followers in one opposing unit. This is a Fear effect.
Used with
The Face of Fear Action: Play this card when one of your cards creates Fear. The Fear affects Personalities as if they were Followers.
I think this kills the personality and all. Just blow up the the Unit!!!!!
You are correct!
Season of the Shadowlands
Is it too late to do a Seasons of the Shadowlands tourny? If not, when is the last date you can do it?
The deadline for Season of the Shadowlands results is January 31.
Hiruma Todori
"Reaction: Once per battle, straighten a target Follower in Todori's army."
Is combining ranged attacks from different Followers considered to be at Reaction speed?
No. It's all done beforehand as part of paying the cost. You can't straighten something and bow it again as part of the same payment.
Couple questions
1) I no longer can find the link on the website; is the Heroes of Rokugan set still available to members of the IA?
No. We just sold out a couple days ago.
2) The card Way of Death refers to players using the Jogo Junzo and SLH strongholds for its larger Fear effect. Has this been MRPd for use with other Shadowlands strongholds, such as Citadel of Daigotsu, Spawning Ground, etc?
The MRP says "If you are a Shadowlands player".
Quick question
Holla, Can Bayushi Paneki move himself into a battle using his ability to move a scorpion personality into a battle?
No. He moves one into "this battle", which means he must already be there himself -- AND his battle must be the current one.
Missing Traits?
(Since Jeff is back on board I'll ask about these again)
Is Hitomi Kagetora the Hitomi Family Daimyo?
That'd be one for Rich to answer.
Kitsune Gohei supposedly used the Black Scroll "The Walking Horror of Fu Leng" and became "The Walking Horror of Fu Leng" (is this poetic justice or what). This implies that Kitsune Gohei was a shugenja. Why doesn't his card have the Shugenja trait (is it because "Walking Horrors" cannot be shugenja and, if so, can we bring this up to the Rokugan Equal Rights for Walking Horrors Tribunal)?
The traits on Kitsune Gohei match those given to the Follower created by the Walking Horror scroll. It's rather difficult to maintain one's connection to the kami when you're a card-carrying member of the lurching dead.
