post for 8 October 2001
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
A few Qns.
First, if your opponent attacks and assigns a unit to attack you Campsite province, and you draw a Call to arms, can you use it?
No. Call to Arms is played in the Declaration Segment, which is before all unit assignment.
Second, and this may have already been answered, can Isawa Riake move a unit to a battle at a province which was a lready destroyed that attack phase?
No.
Third, a few quick questions on Minor Illusions. Does it have any effect on a holding which produces an effect without bowing?
It can't be cast then. There is no trigger.
Can you sacrifice a creature to the Sacrificial Alter, then use Minor Illusions to regain the creature, but keep the gold?
No. The sacrifice is a cost, not an effect.
What effect does it have on Imperial Acrobats that are bowing for the 2 gold and 1 honor?
They'd only make 2 gold.
Finally, with the new wording on He's Mine!, can you challenge someone to an Iaijutsu Art, then He's Mine1 in a much higher chi Samurai?
Yes.
A qns
I juz suddenly thought of something and would like to ask a qns. If oni no ugulu is assigned to province A with a defending unit there and i resolve province B putting accessible terrain there. I move oni no ugulu to province B. And because of his ability, the defender cannot move his unit inside province B.
That is correct.
Question on Rulebook clarification: Wind cards
Spirit Wars personality Kohuri has a reaction which allows him to be discarded whenever an Imperial or Toturi card is targeted with an action, thus cancelling the action. If I for example use Toturi Tsudao's Imperial Favor Battle Action and my opponent cancels it would I be able to discard Kohuri to cancel the action? In short does interacting with the Wind Cards and their effects (Confusion at Court, etc) count as targeting?
Irrelevant. The Keyword Rule does not apply to Winds. Toturi Tsudao is no a Toturi card.

I gotta agree that this doesn't quite fit. Does it target every personality, follower, item, or other attached card in the battle? Does it target the ephemeral sense of "battle" itself? What about other terrains?
Um, people...targeting rule #3 details actions which are NOT targeted due to being global in scope.
Master of Bushido
Zen Faulkes Rules Archive states:
Master of Bushido * Negates honor gains AND LOSSES rather than "canceling" them, because only actions can be canceled. [JA, 6 September 2000] My copy of Master of Bushido: Retainer. Political Reaction: Bow the Master of Bushido when Honor is being gained. Cancel the Honor gain. You cannot cancel any gain that is a result of winning a battle or duel, or being gained by a player who has less than his or her starting Family Honor.
How about losses ? Is a rules archive errata?
Disregard the bit about losses. I no longer recall why I mentioned them, as the card itself does not.
Soul of Trait question [Jeff, Zen]
The Soul of... trait is only used in deck construction right?
Right. This is in the rulebook.
a. If two Scorpion players were playing each other, can one bring out Bayushi Goshiu nonexp and the other bring out Bayushi Kaukatsu?
Yes.
b. Can a Scorpion player have both Bayushi Kaukatsu and Bayushi Goshiu exp3 out at the same time?
Yes.
post for 4 October 2001 / Ruling?? Imperial Favour/Acquiring Favour
Can my opponent bow a personality to lobby for the Favour, discard it for Hantei Naseru's ability(naming Dynasty Phase), and then play Acquiring Favour to use Naseru again(naming Limited Phase) in the same turn??
Yes.
Wait, doesn't the Naseru ability that involves naming phases have to be used at the beginning of your turn?
Yes, which is why the combo needs to use AYF instead of lobbying. BUT...your next point is also important. Even more important, it turns out.
And even if you started the turn with the Favor, your stronghold unbowed, and Acquiring Favor, wouldn't using Naseru's ability twice fall under the rule about not using a reaction on the same card twice for one trigger?
That's a subtle nuance I didn't catch the first time. You're absolutely right. The combo actually isn't legal. This is a REVERSAL.
