A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Two consequences of GE rules (NOT presence/relevance)
Two things - consequences of the changes to the rules since Gold Edition, that I don't think I've ever seen mentioned here.
* the Gold rulebook specifies that the faction formerly known as "The Shadowlands Horde" is now simply called "Shadowlands". AFAIK, the only consequence is that The Spawning Grounds (and Sepulcher of Bones, and Yogo Junzo's Army out of Gold format) now have to pay 6G for the Experienced West Wall of Otosan Uchi [which mentions "Shadowlands Horde" and "Kitsu Tombs" players]. Right?
Right.
* Bayushi Paneki has +3 PH for attaching Followers, but since Ancestors are now their own card type, he can no longer attach Scorpion Clan Ancestors with a non-zero HR, right?
Right again.
Sup. Strategist and night battle
OK, here's a question for ya. We know that superior strategist won't work with deadly ground (via getting a terrain destroying card,) but will it work with night battle. We had this come up in a game last week, and I ruled that you couldn't because the first action you are taking doesn't directly get rid of the night battle. Is this right or not?
It's right. Night Battle works the same way Deadly Ground does if you have no shugenja or Shadowlands stuff.
Question on Three-stone River
Three-stone river Battle Terrain: Lower to 1 the Force of each Personality in this battle with no Followers. Lower the Force of each Personality in this battle with Followers to the Force of his or her highest-Force Follower.
Is this a delayed terrain? Does it combo well with tacticians and ranged attacks?
It works like a Delayed Terrain, yes. Its reduction happens at the very end of the battle. It doesn't work particularly well with ranged attacks.
Question on Three-stone River
The question becomes how does this work with Yu? Is the force of the Personalities in the battle reduced until the end of resolution and therefore vulnerable to getting absolutely demolished with a smattering of Yu?
Narrow Ground is not an Immediate Terrain and there is no listed duration for its effect, so it reduced everyone's Force until the end of the turn.
Open supported, too!
The Crane got Asahina Handen in this release. He is really nasty comboed with small or large farms, but would be positively evil with Merchant Caravan, or some of the corrupt holdings. BTW, would you still lose honor for using his ability and bowing a corrupt holding?
No. You're using Handen, not the Holding.

No cards in Gold were MRPed for purely storyline reasons. None.
Then why on earth did Mirumoto Ukira lose the Topaz Champion trait? That was way to game breaking eh?
I wasn't aware of Ukira changing until now. That particular tweak wasn't deliberate.

No cards in Gold were MRPed for purely storyline reasons. None. We specifically avoided doing so across the board because of the unfavorable player reactions such changes engendered in Jade Edition.
Uhmmm...I was told that Kolat Master was MRP'd because the "powers that be" (tm) no longer wanted Kolats in the storyline.
Alright. How about "no Personalities were MRPed purely for storyline reasons"?

Extention of question, since bringing a corrupt holding into play, the honor loss is created by the holding, can you negate that honor loss with Minor Illusions?
No, by the text of Minor Illusions. The Holding isn't bowing to produce an effect.
Well, the reason I asked was because 'holding's come into played bowed.' Since is specifically mentions that they bow while coming into play (as all other cards come into play unbowed), and cause an honor loss while coming into play...see where the question came from?
I see exactly why the question was asked. The Holding never goes from being straight to being bowed, so there's nothing for Minor Illusions to trigger off. It enters play already bowed.
questions for the Rules Lords
If you'll re-read the rulebook, you'll see that reacting to one of your Personalities leaving battle or leaving play from a battle also satisfies Relevance. It's legal right now without changing anything.
How about this, though... If Moto Gaheris is in a battle (on your opponent's side), you can't play action cards that would kill him because that would not directly remove him from the battle. He's still there, he's just dead.
STOP. Bad reasoning. He does leave the battle following his death. He leaves PLAY following his death. But his removal from the battle is not a direct result of the action. Only his death is. That's the directness rule in a nutshell.
