Rules for 2-7 August 2001
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Greetings,
Trivia fact: It takes almost the exact same amount of time to drive from Alberta to Texas as it does to hold GenCon.
Rules question:
Does Isawa Raike have to be present at a battle to use her ability?
No. You need to have a unit in battle, and the unit must be moving into or out of the currently resolving battle, however.
open action question
Suppose my opponent has a couple personalities, each with a follower. [snip] If my opponent attacks and I do not defend, then I read this as saying I cannot use Low Morale because I have no unit in the battle.
Correct.
Can someone tell me why that is? I am confused because I can use Low Morale during my action phase to bow a follower, it should seem like I should still be able to do so if the follower is in battle, I see no difference between the card bowing a follower not in a battle and bowing one in a battle where I have no units.
Um... because the rules say so. It could be different, but it isn't. Think of it as representing the diffculty in getting the daimyo's order's out to the middle of a dangerous battlefield.
Rules Question: Bayushi Yokuan Vs Oracle of Fire
Oracle of Fire is played before the duel begins so I guess it's possible to play it in a duel involving Yokuan. Am I right?
No. Yokuan's trait also prohibits Reactions during the challenge, and there's no gap between challenge and duel.
Rules Question - Help on this please
What do they mean by Presence and Relevance, are they some kind of rules.
Yes. They can be found in the Gold Edition rulebook (available on line on Steel and Iron, URL at bottom of post).
Also when I don´t have any personalities in a battle, can I take a battle action from a unit outside that province, but in another province that moves it directly to that battle (i.e like Daidoji Rekai Exp 2.)
If it's one of your units, yes.
And what if if they aren´t in any province but in my thief.
Fief? Same answer as above.
At last, what is the FOO rule?
It's now called the "Keyword" rule in Gold Edition (see on-line rulebook).
Question on Bayushi Yojiro ruling
I had asked about this to the list a few weeks ago and was told that he still worked effectively the same as before. It was explained to me that it was an extension of the Toturi ruling in which he enters play, becomes dishonored, and then you gain honor from him (which is, of course, 0).
There's a difference in the wording. Toturi says he "enters play dishonored." Not "enters play, then is dishonored." He's essentially dishonored in your Dynasty deck.
Bayushi Yojiro (Exp. 2), on the other hand, refers to Personalities you control. You don't control a Personality until you have paid all costs and the Personality has completely entered play.
This, so I was told, means that the scorpion personality enters play, has his personal honor increased, and then I gain honor for it. Obviously whoever told me that was mistaken.
Not necessarily. Yojiro's wording changed in Gold Edition, and the ruling changed in response to that.
I would also like to know if this is going to result in a reversal of that Toturi ruling from oh so long ago.
Not from me.
One more.
Does the bonus of a Mountain Pass or a Ring of Earth add to a Ruined Fortress' province strength when the player has below -19 honor?
Yes.
Does [it] matter when the Region or the Ring enters in play here?
Yes. All bonuses that went into figuring a stat are eliminated if that stat is set to a particular number (analogous to copying / switching of stats).
And what will be the force of the province adjacent to the Mountain Pass? -1?
Gold Edition rulebook: "No values in the game except Family Honor and Honor requirements can drop under 0."
Rules for 1 August 2001
If you play ISotF, the sword bonus drops. Fine. But what if one of my personalities simply dies? Shouldn't the sword recalculate and increase back to 1 per person?
No. The bonus is fluctuating (between 0 and whatever), not switching on and off.
Otherwise, if the sword doesn't recalculate, then you are saying that when someone leaves play it is considered a force loss.
No; it's the reduction of a bonus, not a penalty.
In other words, just because the bonus fluctuates, that recalculation is not a re-appliance of the bonus.
Right.
Now, if the sword were unattached and reattached (something currently done only in Open, with Plans Within Plans and a Courier to avoid bowing the personalities involved), then the bonus would be re_applied_ to the new personality, and thus defeat ISotF. Correct?
The Celestial Sword would have to be transferred from an appropriately aligned Clan Personality, to a non-Clan Personality, then back to an in-Clan Personality for the bonus to be reapplied. The bonus exists whenever the Celestial Sword controlled by a Personality of the appropriate Clan, and there's no moment when it is *not* controlled by a Personality when you transfer an item.
Recent Goblin Sneaks ruling?
As I recall, there was a recent ruling made that When a card such as Goblin Sneaks (re-)enters play in a phase other than the usual action phase, normal restrictions on attachment are waved, since you are not actually taking an action which attaches the Sneaks.
Not that I'm aware. It's possible that I missed it, but I'm sure someone will let me know if I did.

Shadowlands and Allies Q
The Gold Edition Stronghold, The Spawning Ground, prohibits that player from taking Political actions. But it says nothing of allying.
It never has.
Can Shadowlands players now ally? Or am I missing something really dumb?
Shadowlands players have never had any general restriction against allying. Only specific stronghold text prevented it for Yogo Junzo's Army / The Shadowlands Horde.
Shadowlands and Allies Q
I checked the Accumulated Rulings (thanks, Zen), and it has a "blah blah Shadowlandsish Stronghold reads:" and includes "may not ally, or invite allies." Kind of ... uh, one of those oversights, I guess, that they forgot to print on the gold Ed. SL boxes. The ruling is dated July, '01. Darn.
I'm not sure what you're talking about. The original question was about the Spawning Ground stronghold. They can ally; always have been able to. The Shadowlands Horde stronghold has never been able to ally, and still can't.
Towers of the Yogo
I have a personality with one follower attached, and my opponent (playing the Towers of the Yogo) has two Scorpion personalities in play. He bows one of his personalities and bows my follower. Can he now bow his second Scorpion personality to bow my personality?
No; that's not a Personality without Followers.
Wasn't Gold supposed to slow....
Also, isn't Suspicions unusable by SLH?
Perfectly usable. It is not an action. (If there was a FAQ, some version of that question should go in it.)
Newbie-type Questions
When a Terrain card is played can it only be "replaced" by using an effect that *destroys* Terrain (Go Master, for example)?
Effects that replace terrains also destroy the one in play. Terrains can also be destroyed without being replaced.
I've had it happen where I play my Contentios Terrain only to have it replaced by some other Terrain that does nothing for the person playing it.
Perfectly legal.
I get from the rulebook that Terrains can *only* be destroyed by card effects that say they destroy terrain.
Right.
Does Fear bow Personalities at all?
Not without some additional effect.
Has "Take the Initiative" ever had text that allows the attacker to take the first Battle action?
No.
The one I have says nothing about that, but the other player insists that it's has errata.
It if did, it would be in the Rules Archive (URL at bottom). (I'd sure like to know how these rassa-frackin' rumours get started.)
How can a newbie Crab player like myself combat Cavalry?
Build a wall. (The Crab's solution to anything!) Dragon's Teeth is pretty tasty. Elite Pikemen also pose significant problems for Cavalry. Speaking of followers, there are many more infantry followers available than cavalry ones, and the infantry followers provide a lot more bang for the buck.
Rules question: Shiryo no Shinjo
I tried to Block Supply Lines but the action was considered to be targeting cards in Otaku Kamoko's unit, with Shiryo no Shinjo[.] Is referring to "an attacking unit" the same as targeting cards in the unit?
Yes. If you target a unit, you always target the Personality leading it.
proxies in Gold
I know you can use the old versions of "Souls" in tourneys, but can you use a Pearl Edition Ambush, or Imperial Imperal Gift?
Sure. Earlier printings of cards have always been allowed, and always will be. There's a big difference between proxies and an earlier printing of the card.
Genshuo Rules Q
Can Genshuo/Juppun use the Dragon Tattoo to get Force bonuses? Can Genshuo/Juppun gain Force bonuses from attaching weapons?
Yes. See Rules Archive, General Rules, Bonuses and Penalties.
