Rules for 1 August 2001
A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Greetings,
Yesterday, I noted that Utter Defeat was once playable by Shadowlands players because it did not cause an immediate Honor loss. However, I've found a precedent that the "immediate" test for actions no longer applies for Shadowlands: Lessons of Honor. According to the Rules Archive, Shadowlands players can't use it, so they don't get to use Utter Defeat on another player, either.
Tournament rules
Can somebody confirm for me what the new tournament rules are to be?
They haven't been announced yet.
can people confirm that a wind has to be chosen with a deck and cannot be swapped mid tournament.
In the Rules Archive.
Hi
may i know wat is the use of shady dealings?
It pays 5 Gold for an action by bowing your Stronghold. Since most Strongholds produce less tha five gold, it's a way to pay for an action earlier than would otherwise be possible.
Rules for July 30th
Is there an AEG list up yet, and if so, how long will the Oracle list here remain?
Yes, and not my department.
Something returning to play is considering to be entering play again.
How does this apply with the various cards that resurrect the dead?
Fully.
Most of these return a character to play with 0 gold cost; do they (if of the player's Faction) gain that player family honor?
That option is only available in Dynasty Phase. See Rules Archive.
Also, in the case of personalities who were experienced, do we bring back both cards?
No. See Gold rulebook, Experienced Traits: it's in there.
[D]oes [Ambush Strategist] allow an item which had no force bonus before such as a jade bow to gain a force bonus to itself, and thus by the rule under Bonuses and Penalties (p32 gold) "Items add their force and chi directly to their personality's stats," add the bonus to the personality?
Yes.
I suspect also that if used on a shujenga with an attached spell (Fires from within, e.g.), that the spell would get a force bonus, but as there's no rule of transfer from spell to personality, that bonus would be meaningless.
Yes.
Not going to GenCon
Um, am I to infer from this that either Dave Williams is not going to be at GenCon or Dave Williams is not a member of the Rules Junta?
Heh. Dave *is* going to GenCon, but he's only rarely involved in behind-the-scenes rules discussions for L5R these days. I think he's spending most of his time on Warlord. (Terrific game, incidentally.)
Rules for July 30th
If I use C@C and negate the use of the favor, he can't pay the cost for the Underhand and can't get rid of a card. So he could look at your hand, but not discard. Are you saying this is not true?
That's not what Vaughn said. Vaughn was getting at that discarding the Favor as a cost makes an action Political, but it does not make the action an Imperial Favor *effect*. Severed From the Emperor (the card in point) only prevents effects, and cannot prevent the use of the Favor to pay a cost.
I thought Jeff ruled that card attachment is a two way street - that the sword is attached to the personality and the personality is attached to the sword? So it would, I thought by extension, give a +1F/+1C bonus for the one personality it was attached to.
No. The bonus is written in ink *ON THE SWORD*, not the Personality, The Personality is not giving the Sword a bonus (though he or she does influence how big that bonus will be).
Otherwise, would the Doji Guard lose their bonus?
The Doji House Guard don't get a bonus; their force is a variable stat. See Rules Archive, Bonuses and Penalties.
The whole deal with In Search and conditional force bonuses relies on the condition *ceasing* to be met, and then being met again. Take Takuan. He gives a force bonus to all TA personalities in his army. If he's attacking, and In Search is played, his bonus is *still there*, but reduced to zero. Now, if he uses a SupTac to move to a different province, the 0f bonus he was giving everyone goes from 0 to nonexistant. Now, if he uses *another* SupTac to move back in, his bonus gets reapplied at full strength, due to the fact that it ceased existing for a second, and then got reapplied. That is *not* the case with an attached Sword.
What is the definition, then, of reapplied?
The bonus completely ceases to exist because a condition for the bonus is not met. Only conditional bonus (i.e., those using a word like "if" or "when") can be reapplied.
If you play ISotF, the sword bonus drops. Fine. But what if one of my personalities simply dies? Shouldn't the sword recalculate and increase back to 1 per person?
No. The bonus is fluctuating (between 0 and whatever), not switching on and off.
Why does it recalculate ("is reapplied") when a person enters play, but not when a person leaves play?
I think you've misread or misunderstood Vaughn's post, or Vaughn misspoke. I didn't get that from his post.
Otherwise, if the sword doesn't recalculate, then you are saying that when someone leaves play it is considered a force loss.
No; it's the reduction of a bonus, not a penalty.
Kolat Assassin
Anyone could tell me if a Shadowlands player may play a Kolat Assassin? He can't loss the 4 points of honor!
Honor loss in that case is an effect, not a cost.
And what about Imperial Funeral?
Can Shadowlands play it, you mean? Yes. It's not an action.
