Rules for 12 July 2001

Zen Faulkes, sent 13 July 2001 to the l5r-useful list, L5RINFO

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

Ashigaru Spearmen and card drawing

Since the extra card drawing is now a trait with no real qualifiers, instead of a coming into play affect, shouldn't you be able to draw a card *every* turn?

See Rules Archive. No. (Think about it: Would bringing Experienced Kyoso no Oni into play cause you to lose 5 Honor *every turn* until the end of the game? It's worded the same way as the Ashigaru Followers.)

OK. I take it that means that the line in the archive is supposed to mean the Ancestor goes into your hand.

Well, I suppose not exactly. The *event* tells you to put the Ancestor in your hand. I mean, what else do you do when a card tells you to "get" something from your Fate deck? Also, the current ruling in the Archive is premised on the fact that getting the card from the deck is a seperate effect from attaching the ancestor.

If the Ancestor is in your fate hand but not in your deck, you would still lose the honor?

Yup. You didn't "get" the Ancestor.

Akasha ruling question

does Akasha's ablilty to make a ranged two attack bow her?

[Zen has flashback to Imperial Edition. Wyrm Riders simply say "Battle: Ranged 2 attack," with no indication of whether they bow. Zen gets in argument with Ryan Dancey in *real* early days of l5rinfo about Wyrm Riders. Ryan's been telling people, "They're like a very slow Heart of the Inferno." Zen sputters, "But... but... but..." and takes Ryan to task (Ryan's words), arguing Wyrm Riders should bow, because the rulebook says things bow for Ranged Attacks. Ultimately, Wyrm Riders are ruled to bow. Zen begins slow return to the present day...]

Yes.

On: Akasha
On par with Go Home. Bowed.

I hate to put a stick in the hornets nest but the ruling with Counterattack and Rallying Cry is just awful. Everyone felt that intuitively it should not work that way except one.

Intuition doesn't exert a real strong pull in situations like this. Find a logical inconsitency and sing it out, and I'll be a very receptive audience.

So I would say that if they play Counterattack before they bow from combat they are still straight and can defend against the CA.

Just one problem. That is not what the cards, rules, or rulings say. Here's the points to keep in mind.

1. The Gold Edition rulebook has bowing written in Resolution Segment. Rallying Cry is played *after* that segment. (Even if bowing was after the Resolution Segement, non-action effects still precede actions.) Therefore, units *always* bow before Rallying Cry can be played; you just normally don't "see" it.

2. By the timing rules, Counterattack *WILL* be played and resolve before Rallying Cry if there are no more battles to resolve.

This is how I would fix it. It would not take an executive order just a realignment on how it works.

No, it *would* take an executive order to change the sitation. The wording on either Rallying Cry or (more likely) Counterattack would have to change -- either by errata or by use of the "most recent printing" rule.

On par with Go Home. Bowed.

Thing is... this isn't a new ruling. It's just newly clarified in the Rulings Archive. It's been this way for as long as I can remember.

Joe is correct that the "retroactive" nature of Rallying Cry is in no way, shape, or form a new ruling -- and I so in my first post on the subject.

I think that reason why the ruling never got added to Jeff Alexander's Accumulated Rulings or my Rules Archive was that the weird retroactive nature of Rallying Cry only showed its head during a secondary Counterattack, which is uncommon, at best.

New player's question.

Kyuden Hitomi: This doesn't seem to be advantageous, unless the cards under Kyuden Hitomi are face up and you can choose any of the face up cards.

They're face down, but you get to pick which you want.
