Rules for 11 July 2001

Zen Faulkes, sent 12 July 2001 to the l5r-useful list, L5RINFO

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings,

More changes caused by Gold Edition

Counterattack: Will be played after Rallying Cry if there are more battles to resolve.

Zen there are never any more Battles to resolve when a Counterattack is played. As its trigger is the last resolution segment.

I know. I'm being redundant for purposes of clarity.

Zen I'm thinking a spelled out example may be good in addition.

Something like that is better put in a real FAQ than the Rules Archive.

Gold targetting and Yodin Sensei

Do the Gold Edition rules regarding whether an action is targetted or not cause Overconfidence and Enough Talk! to be targetted actions now, thus making them unplayable with Yodin Sensei?

Yes to both. Targeting is now pretty much the default for actions.

Counterattack and Rallying Cry, was Re: [L5RINFO] More changes caused by Gold Edition

No MRP that is reflected in the Rules Archive.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, it's a question of the *timing rules* in Gold Edition changing, *not* card text.

Battle Actions: A resolves Province 4. Can play Rallying Cry. Resolution: B *can* play Counterattack here.

Since both parties want to play a reaction here, who gets to play first? By the quasi-official Gold rulebook, it seems that the opposing player -- i.e., the inactive player, B, gets to react first, then goes round the table (C, D, E, F, G...) and finally back to A again. If that's the case:

Battle Actions: A resolves Province 4. Can play Rallying Cry. Resolution: B *can* play Counterattack here. Reactions: B play Counterattack. Resolves Counterattack first. A plays Rallying Cry. Resolves Rallying Cry

That what you saying, Zen?

Just so.

This means A's attacking army will take no part in the battles the Counterattack starts at all, correct?

Right.

Let's take this a bit further. Assume B has a Rallying Cry here and for some reason wants to play it. And assume A has a Counterattack in hand too -- just to clarify something.

[snip]

Battle Actions: B resolves Province 4. Can play Rallying Cry. Resolution: A *can* play Counterattack here. B plays Rallying Cry. Resolves Rallying Cry. A play Counterattack. Resolves Counterattack. [Resolves A's Counterattack; see below] A plays Rallying Cry. Resolves Rallying Cry

Is that correct? Because A is the active player here, so his reactions go *last* -- Counterattack doesn't change who's the active player, just who's attacking.

Exactly right.

Just very confused now...

But you got it right, as far as I can tell.

Defend Your Honor question

Can you play [Defend Your Honor]in response to refusing an I Challenge?

Yes. Where's the honor loss written? The other player's card.

Some questions.

What *can* stop the actions of a defensive army with Hiruma Sensei?

Master's Tactics + appropriate Terrain. That is the only thing that will beat an active Hiruma Sensei. (You can also bypass the question by suprressing its effects; e.g., Amnesia.)

And whoever mentioned Crushing Attack -- no, that won't work either.

Counterattack and Rallying Cry, was Re: [L5RINFO] More changes caused by Gold Edition

Boy, did Zen open up a can of worms on this one, or WHAT?

I did say I dreaded mentioning it...

It hasn't been as bad as I expected, though. People have got the logic right.

To the Last Man Question

If the force of personalities has been changed, such as with Arriving at the Imperial Gates, and To the Last Man is played, are bowed cards destroyed at full "printed" value or full "force if I wasn't bowed" value?

Current force, with bowed cards contributing as though not bowed, as specified on Gold Edition text.

Campsite Ruling[BRAND]

On the new Campsite region it states that "once per unit per turn" you get to draw a card for that unit moving into or assigning to the province. On the original it stated the same, except it said that "once per unit" and at the end it said it could be done once per turn.

No, it didn't. Campsite didn't change in Gold.

Counterattack and Rallying Cry

I tend to see this situation in a nested sense, as in:

A's attacks { [whatever happens here] B's 1st Counterattack { [whatever happens here] A's 1st Counterattack { [whatever happens here] B's 2nd Counterattack { [whatever happens here] } } } A's Rallying Cry }

From this point of view, A's Rally won't kick in until waaaay after the Counterattacks finishes. I would just like to ask if this is what is supposed to happen.

Yes, as far as I can tell.

(Side note.. yup, can of worms. Sorry, Zen.)

It's actually not much worse than it ever was. Seriously. As I said yesterday, people *ALWAYS* have a hard time wrapping their head around this. It's mainly because Counterattack takes longer to resolve than any other Reaction.

Anyway, another question is that if B throws down a Rallying Cry in reaction to his 1st Counterattack, when would it resolves? Before A's 1st Counterattack, as A is actually the "active" player?

Exactly this.

Revering the Past Question

Revering the Past. If you don't have a personality in play when this event resolves but you do have one in your fate deck, what do you do? Do you still fetch the ancestor? Do you then discard it or do you put it in your hand?

See Rules Archive. Get the Ancestor.

Card Questions

The new wording of Flattery is unclear as to what happens in the odd instance where Flattery can start but not finish.

The total Focus values in your hand *excluding* Flattery must be larger than the opposing army to play it. (Dang -- I really thought they'd got the wording exactly right.)

Returning to play..

Can you use entering play effects with the "return to play" abilities of Kuni Yori 3 or Dark Sanctuary?

Yes.
