Challenge vs Duel + Delay

L5R CCG Rules board, 20 January 2012

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

1. can a duel happen without a challenge?

Steel on Steel Iaijutsu Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Personality and target an enemy Personality: Your performer DUELS the target. Destroy the duel's loser.

vs

Sanctioned Duel Iaijutsu Limited: Choose your performing unbowed Personality and target another player's Personality: Your Personality CHALLENGES the target. He may refuse; if he does, dishonor him and gain 2 Honor. Destroy the duel's loser.

2. or is this just a way for design to say: DUELS are unrefusable where CHALLENGE refusable ? but then, will we still be seeing cards that produce unrefusable challenges?

Doji Hakuseki (Experienced 2) Battle: Target an enemy Personality: Hakuseki issues him an UNREFUSABLE CHALLENGE. The controller of the duel's winner gains 2 Honor. Bow the duel's loser, and destroy him if he is dishonorable.

3. if a card effect only says DUEL can i skip the part

Challenges http://rules.l5r.com/EE_Challenges_and_duels A challenge is an effect that can create a duel: an individual confrontation between two personalities controlled by different players.

?

4. if a card effect produces a DUEL like STEEL ON STEEL gets delayed, do I need to have my personality in play once the effect to DUEL pushes through?

Duels A: The duel begins: This is the same point that both Personalities enter the duel. The two Personalities are now facing each other in the duel.

it doesn't stipulate that both personalities had to be controlled or in play.

*unlike a card effect that produces an unrefusable CHALLENGE like DOJI HAKUSEKI XP2 which checks that personalities needs to be controlled [in play] to create a duel as cited on question 3.

thanks!
