A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

So basically any Bushido Virtue printed since The Plague War that is performed does not trigger his ability, since cards started using "choose a performing personality:" instead of "target your personality:"?
Open Emotion, EaW Bushido Virtue Open: Rehonor a target Samurai. <----------I guess this one works. Open: Choose your performing unbowed Samurai and show a Strategy in your hand: Once this turn, after engaging in a battle as the Defender, you may take an additional action to play a card with the shown card's title.
My Life is Yours, TPW Bushido Virtue Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Samurai: Bow a target enemy Personality with equal or lower Personal Honor. You may target and bow another enemy Personality with a base Gold Cost of 6 or less.
In the Heart of Battle Bushido VIrtue Battle/Open: Choose your performing Samurai: Straighten him and give him +3F. Destroy him before this turn ends.
Bushido Virtue • Duty Battle/Open: Choose two or three of your performing Samurai: Each of them has +1F and the ability "Battle: Ranged 4 Attack" while in an army with one or more of the others.
For comparison...
Prayer for Guidance, IG2 Bushido Virtue Battle/Open: Target your honorable Samurai: After the next time this turn he is destroyed or bowed by another player's action or by battle resolution, gain 3 Honor.

Yes. None of those cards works with Naomasa.
We did consider adding a rule for Celestial Edition along the lines of "'Choose your Performing XXX' implies that XXX is a target of the action", but decided that it would be an unnecessary complication.

So I saw this response, from the rules team, and I have to ask...
Why not just issue technical errata to Naomasa, rather than make him completely useless, or muckety up the rules. (not that he saw a lot of play to begin with, what with all of 2 of the CE Bushido Virtues targeting, and only 3 more in all of CE for a grand total of 5 out of 13. For a personality that is supposed to be used with Bushido Virtues, he works with exceedingly few of them...

Matsu Naomasa Lion Clan • Samurai • Paragon Reaction: After one of your Bushido Virtue actions targets Naomasa: Gain 2 Honor.
Prayer for Guidance Bushido Virtue Battle/Open: Target your honorable Samurai: After the next time this turn he is destroyed or bowed by another player's action or by battle resolution, gain 3 Honor.

As said, performing and targeting is now different. So shouldn't the said Bushido Virtues work on Naomasa. Since it did say the 'target' on the action?
