A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. A player, 9 April 2011
if we each focus two cards in a duel, then strike and we both have two cards with focus effects, whos triggers off first and do they trigger in turn order like reactions, were you play a reaction, or pass?
Challenged:Focused Arrows Do Not Falter Discretionary Valor
Challenger:Focused Hamstrung Hired Thugs
would my arrows do not falter kill him before his focus effects go off?

It depends on which of you is the active player.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Challenges_and_duels: "All Focus Effect traits on focused cards resolve, triggered by the game occurrence “Focus Effects resolve.” Multiple Focus Effects resolve in an order chosen by the active player."
If you are the active player and choose to kill him with your Arrows first, the remaining focus effects won't trigger.
From the same section as above: "If a Personality involved in a challenge or duel leaves play during it, the challenge or duel ends immediately without resolution. In particular, Focus Effects that have not yet resolved at that point do not resolve at all."
