Timing - Shuriken and Smoke

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 April 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I believe I know the answer to this, but I want to be sure. Shuriken and Smoke, plus a few other Ninja cards, give the option of moving home as part of the action. What I want to make sure is whether or not I have to announce the move-home portion before targeting.

The imaginary scenario is that Ninja A announces that he is performing Shuriken and Smoke to do a ranged 5 attack vs a 4 force enemy personality. Player B reacts with the Cost of Pride to reduce the ranged attack's force and make it fizzle. Does the ninja now have the option to stay or run away, or was that option skipped during the announcement phase? I guess it boils down to whether you have to announce optional effects, or if the choices remain until the resolution phase. I suspect the latter is true.

Shuriken and Smoke Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Ninja Personality: Ranged 5 Attack. You may move your Ninja home.

The Cost of Pride Reaction: After a Ranged Attack targets one of your cards: Give the Ranged Attack -3 strength.

No.

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Order_of_effects: "Effects occur in the order they are written." This includes optional effects.

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Choices: "Regardless of these considerations, each of the effects following 'may' is activated and applied separately, and can be negated separately."
