random discard

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 April 2011 to 8 April 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If my opponent is allowed to discard a card at random from my hand, am I allowed to shuffle my hand before he discards a card?

Why? If it's random, it wouldn't make a difference.

It would make a difference for those that sort their hands while playing and if the opponent is paying attention to where the cards are coming from. IE. if you sorted all your items to the back and your opponent didn't want you having items he/she would easily be able to take out that item.

Needless to say, that's not random. This is why it's not a bad idea to have dice around for such occasions, since it's random and transparent to both players.

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Areas_of_the_ga ... of_play.29: "A player may rearrange any number of cards in his or her hand that have the same owner at any time, except when this will cause a sequence of effects on the same card to become unverifiable.

"Example: When an action asks the player to show a card in his or her hand, then shuffle it back into the deck, the cards may not be rearranged between the two effects."
