If I destroy a unit that has chagtai's armor, does he get to react and destroy the armor to prevent the death of the personality even if the 1000 cut was going to destroy the armor to begin with?

The Reaction is played before resolution, so occurs well before anything is destroyed.
Additional: The Armor will still be destroyed, though its effect saves the Personality.
