Shuffle and Searching

L5R CCG Rules board, 1 December 2010 to 4 December 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi,

I use the ability of a Bitter Lies Student, search in the discard pile (but do not choose/found anything) and search in the Fate deck, find a non-unique weapon but don't attached it. What's happen in this case? Must I shuffled my Fate deck or not? I found a card. So, "If the card is not found, the deck is still shuffled immediately after searching." do not applied. But the card doesn't leave the deck. Then, "All effects that search decks for cards also shuffle the deck after the found card (if any) leaves the deck." do not applied too.

Thanks in advance.

Bitter Lies Student Battle/Open: Remove this card from the game: Search your discard pile, then your Fate deck, for a non-Unique Weapon. You may attach it to your target Personality.

Search To inspect a deck, or all cards in another area, in order to select one or more cards from it. A player searching an area looks at the faces of all cards in it, keeping them as they were (face-up or face-down). He or she may look at all cards before deciding which ones to select, unless otherwise instructed by text (such as, "Put the first Ring you find into play."). All effects that search decks for cards also shuffle the deck after the found card (if any) leaves the deck. If the card is not found, the deck is still shuffled immediately after searching. Such shuffling is not an effect, but a mechanical requirement of the search process; for example, it cannot be negated. If an effect directs a player to search for a card and play it, and it cannot be played, it is discarded instead. If a player searches for a particular description of card and does not select any, the search effect fails, with special consequences. For the rest of the game, any of his or her further attempts to search for that description of card will fail, even if a card matching that description re-enters the deck or other searched area. Searching multiple areas If an effect instructs a player to search two different game areas: * If the first area consists of face-up cards (such as a discard pile), and the player finds and selects what he or she was searching for in that area, the second area is not searched. Once the second area starts to be searched, cards in the face-up area may not be selected any more. * If the first area consists of face-down cards (such as a deck), the second area may be searched regardless of whether anything was found or selected in the first area. * A deck only needs to be shuffled if it was actually searched.

Must I shuffled my Fate deck or not?

Yes.

Hi,

First, thanks.

Regarding the previous post: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=87586#p1157782 Could you explain why and exactly when we must to shuffle the Fate deck in this example (the process, the rule(s) to applied this, ...), please?

Thanks in advance.

Stop gap "Because I say so" ruling while Rules Junta deliberates.

Rules wiki glossary entry for search has been updated. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_S#Search, new text in bold: "If the card is not found or is not required to leave the deck after it is found (e.g., due to some optional effect), the deck is still shuffled immediately after searching."

Regarding this topic

The update of Rule Glossary about "Search" now states that "the deck is still shuffled immediately after searching" as a mechanical consequence of the effect "Search your discard pile, then your Fate deck, for a non-Unique Weapon" from Bitter Lies Student (according that the card has been chosen in the Fate Deck).

So, how could the optional effect be solved, since the chosen card is now in a shuffled fate deck?

Why should we delay the shuffling of the Fate Deck after the resolution of the Optional Effect "You may attach it to your target Personality.", when the rule say "immediately after searching"?

Of course, if the player decided at the point of searching if he will activate the optional effect (or not), the card could simply be removed from the deck (or left inside). But why should he take the choice before the normal timing?

Thank you for clarifying theses aspects.

Let's see if this wording withstands the magnifying glass, then.

"If a card is found, but is not required to leave the deck after due to some optional effect, the deck and found card is shuffled after the optional effect resolves."
