Retribution X2

L5R CCG Rules board, 28 May 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I attacked into a lion player and took a province. he reacts with retribution. he assigns, i have no defenders. he's playing followers and ends up keeping his attacking personality unbowed by resolution. he takes one of my provinces. then he plays retribution again and takes another.

my question: is that legal? the judge at the time stated that he could use the retribution to react to the original attack phase. my issue was that the card creates a new attack phase which makes my opponent the attacker and not the defender.

what is the correct ruling? are the phases separate? or is the phase created by the first retribution still part of the original phase in which i was the attacker?

is that legal?

Yes. When a Reaction trigger happens, you have not passed on the window of opportunity until all players pass on the Reaction trigger consecutively. Here the trigger is your own normal Attack Phase, which your opponent reacts to twice, although there has been a lot of stuff in between each copy of Retribution.

Mod reminder: as requested by the rules forum guideline, please use the search function before asking new questions. See "2xRetribution + Unwavering Assault".

are the phases separate?

Yes, each Attack Phase is a separate phase: your normal Attack Phase, then the first additional one, then the second additional one are consecutive.
