Enticement + Seppukku

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 April 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player, 10 April 2010

Enticement Open: Pay Gold equal to the total Gold Cost of the targeted Personality's unit: Lose 3 Honor. Take control of a target Personality. While you control him, you may not assign his unit to attack and he will not move to attack. Before this turn ends, give control of him to his owner.

Seppuku Reaction: Any number of times per turn, before you lose Honor from an action that targeted or was performed by one of your Courtier or Samurai Personalities: He commits seppuku. If the seppuku destroyed him, reduce the Honor loss to one.

I'd been told this had been ruled on, but couldn't find it when I searched up Enticement.

Scenario A) I play Enticement, targeting my opponent's Personality A. In response to the honour loss, I seppukku (my opponent's) Personality A.

Scenario B) I play Enticement, targeting my opponent's Personality A. In response to the honour loss, my opponent seppukkus his Personality A.

Are either of the above acceptable outcomes, or is it accurate that at no point will somebody be able to seppukku an Enticement? My ruling was that neither of the above is possible.

You are correct. Neither scenario A nor B are legal plays.

Why?

A) The honor loss is Seppuku's trigger, and at the time it occurs for you, the Personality is not yours.

B) Seppuku triggers off "you" losing Honor. Your opponent does not lose honor, so he may not take the Seppuku Reaction.
