Game of Sincerity - Laughter of the Flames

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 February 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

There are now ten cards in the Celestial Environment which use the word contribute with relation to force in battles. Many of them do it in different ways and these do cause confusion especially with regard to Game of Sincerity - A card which says that two targeted personalities do not contribute force in battle resolution.

My basic question is what happens if subsequent to being targeted by a Game of Sincerity I play Laughter of the Flames on my personality, will that counteract the effects of the Game of Sincerity and if not, then why not as the word even implies an either/or state of bowedness(sic). As rulings are being made by what the wording on the card implies (see sunrise keep - clan alignment ruling) I believe that it should overwrite it as if the card were meant to only work if bowed it would say "while bowed" not "even while bowed."

Likewise assuming my personality becomes bowed so should Essence of the East Wind have a similar overwriting effect.

Furthermore if the word contribute is going to continue to be used is it possible to have it added to the comprehensive rules glossary please?

many thanks Azrael

(I)f subsequent to being targeted by a Game of Sincerity I play Laughter of the Flames on my personality, will that counteract the effects of the Game of Sincerity (?)

No. Laughter of the Flames only overrides one reason a card may not contribute force: because it is bowed. It does not override any other reason a card might not contribute force.

(I)f the word contribute is going to continue to be used is it possible to have it added to the comprehensive rules glossary please?

Many -- indeed, most -- words in L5R cards have only their normal English usage. We are not going to duplicate the dictionary in the rules glossary. That way lies madness.
