Burn the Village and Wander Among the Stars

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 January 2010 to 29 January 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Regarding this question: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81281&start=0

A) would it be possible to have an answer to the above now that The Harbinger questions are being answered?

B) is the targeting from this action considered to occur simultaneously (even though there are two steps to the targeting, by each player)? This is important because of the following from the comprehensive rules: "When multiple targets are chosen simultaneously, the same target cannot be chosen twice." Could I target a personality that my opponent as targeted already (or v.v.)?

C) Likewise, from the same ruling/clarification: "This also means that when one target out of multiple, already-chosen targets is being changed, another one of those already-chosen targets cannot legally become the new target." Could I redirect (i.e. with Final Sacrifice, Chugo Seido, Imperial Command - assuming boxable unique [e.g. Isawa Kyoko Exp, Isawa Mizuhiko Exp, Isawa Reido] was targeted first) this to an already targeted personality (e.g. Shiba Morihiko)?

Cheers,

Burn the Village reads "Each player may target one or two Personalities" (with a condition). Per the rules about timing, the timing sequence must be used to determine the order of multiple choices created by a single piece of text that must logically be done in sequence, such as targeting made by different players when game text does not specify an order. Here these choices will happen at step B and so the active player will decide the order in which each player's targeting takes place.

Burn the Village destroys all targeted Personalities simultaneously. As a consequence, if the active player chooses first, the other player may choose more Personalities he controls so that he can take the Reaction from Wander Among the Stars in order to negate the destruction of all targeted Personalities he controls.

B) is the targeting from this action considered to occur simultaneously

If a player targets two Personalities, their targeting is simultaneous. However the next targeting made by a different player happens later, not simultaneously. As a consequence, each player can legally target a Personality that has already been targeted by another player.

C) Could I redirect (i.e. with Final Sacrifice, Chugo Seido) this to an already targeted personality?

Yes.

Regarding part C of this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81360

Let's say I target two of my opponent's personalities with burn the village. He wants to redirect the effect from one personality to the other personality I targeted. I was under the impression that if a card says "target X number of personalities" you cannot target the same personality X number of times. If this is the case, why can you redirect the burn the village targeting to what would be an illegal target? Or, if this is not the case for burn the village, could I, for example, target a personality with an attached Hand of the Jade Dragon twice to attempt to destroy said personality twice?

You are correct and your opponent cannot change the targeting of one of his Personalities to the other one who has been targeted simultaneously.

Glossary, Targeting: "When multiple targets are chosen simultaneously, the same target cannot be chosen twice. This also means that when one target out of multiple, already-chosen targets is being changed, another one of those already-chosen targets cannot legally become the new target."

why can you redirect the burn the village targeting to what would be an illegal target?

You cannot but my answer above was too vague, sorry. Burn the Village has two steps of targeting: one player (chosen by the active player) targets zero, one or two Personalities who meet the condition, then the other player does. If any player chooses to target two Personalities, it is not legal to change the targeting of one of them so that it targets the other one because they are targeted simultaneously. However when the second player targets any Personalities, it is legal to change the targeting of one of them so that it targets one that has been targeted by the first player, if this Personality has not been targeted by the second player too.

could I, for example, target a personality with an attached Hand of the Jade Dragon twice to attempt to destroy said personality twice?

No. Each player can target such a Personality once, so he may be targeted twice if both players target him. However Burn the Village will not attempt to destroy him twice: it destroys each targeted Personality once per Personality, not once per targeting.
