Events revealed outside events phase

L5R CCG Rules board, 15 November 2009 to 22 November 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If an event is revealed outside the events phase will it ever resolve? Trying to clarify for my playgroup, since there seem to be conflicting rulings.

Under: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_types#Events "An Event only resolves by being turned face-up during the Events Phase."

I think Kaiu Genji indicated it would: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=79365&p=1039402&hilit=border+keep#p1039402

however, Bayushi Loïc indicated otherwise: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=79314&p=1038833&hilit=border+keep#p1038833

I'm seeing all three agreeing: Events only resolve in the Events phase.

You may want to reread Genji's post.

Could you clarify the following:

Events and Regions resolve in the Events phase only. If they are flipped face up during any other phase (Border Keep, et. al.) they just sit there, and will resolve normally during your next Event Phase.

I have a problem with the second part of the answer, specifically:

If they are flipped face up during any other phase (Border Keep, et. al.) they just sit there, and will resolve normally during your next Event Phase.

Events revealed this way should *never* resolve at all. As per Comp rules:

"An Event only resolves by being turned face-up during the Events Phase."

Regions *will* resolve on your following Events Phase because there is no additional rule that says they need to be *turned face-up during the Events Phase* to resolve.

Events and Regions in this case are treated differently.

Thanks for your time.

Under discussion.

Regarding this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=80156

In the sequence of play rules, the first entry for the events phase is as follows: A. The active player turns a card in the province face-up, revealing it. If the card was already face-up, the other steps still happen, but the card is not "revealed "for purposes of triggering effects.

Therefore, even if the card is face up, isn't it still considered to be face up, even if it isn't considered to be "revealed?" I know that some actions aren't successful (such as straightening a straight card) but isn't the effect applied anyways, it just doesn't count as a successful action because there was no gamestate change?? If this is the case, do you (or do you not) turn your already face up card face up? Since "An Event only resolves by being turned face-up during the Events Phase," wouldn't it resolve even though it's already face up?

Additionally, the rule says "If the card was already face-up, the other steps still happen," so wouldn't that at least imply that if the event is already face up, it resolves anyways?

After discussion, we realized that the line ainthe pointed out was written in error.

Events do not need to be flipped face up in the Events phase for them to resolve.

However, Events will only resolve in the Events phase, as has been the case.
