So my friend built a pretty nice Enlightenment deck and a question came up during a group game. When can the Ring of Earth be played during an allied attack? This was the situation. Player A is declares an attack against Player C, and Play B allies with Player A. Player A only has enough Personalities to engage at one battlefied. Player B sends his troops to each of the other battlefields. Can Player A play the Ring of Earth as a result of Player B destroying a Province? Can Player B ever play the Ring of Earth while being allied? This caused quite a discussion during the game as it was a game winning issue. I had thought that player A would have to take a Province or atleast destroy some personalities to Paly the Ring. However, someone else argued that since Player A was the actual attacker and Player B was only the allied, which ever army won the battle was under the command of Player A and that Player A fulfilled the requirements. Can anyone make a call on this?
Ring of Earth and Group games
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

The "someone else" was correct. Player A may play the Ring of Earth because he declared the attack, and Player B never can play it for just allying.
Whoever declares the attack is the Attacker and whoever's provinces are being attacked is the Defender.
Only the Attacker or Defender ever "win" the battle, even if the army they "won" with only contained allying units.
