I am buying a Lion with 7 honor requirement, 6 goldcost and am at 7 Honor. What would happen if I use the smuggler´s port to produce 3 gold for him? Would I then have to pay 2 more to ignore the honor requirement, or is that checked before paying? The rules aren´t very clear on the moment you check honor requirement.

See Playing Personalities, in particular: B. The personality’s Honor Requirement and other restrictions on its entering play are checked at this point and at no other time; and C. If requirements and restrictions were met in step B, the player pays the Personality’s Gold cost;
The Personality's honour requirement is checked in step B; if you lose honour during step C this will not stop you bringing the Personality into play.
