Exposing Secrets, Test of Sincerity and Seppuku

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 September 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Greetings!

So here's the scenario, My opponent plays Exposing Secrets and then, targets my personality with Test of Sincerity. Will Exposing Secrets trigger?

References:

Exposing Secrets:

Political Open: If you have not taken an action from any copy of this card this turn, bow your target Courtier: Target another player. After the resolution of the next Reaction he takes this turn, he loses 3 Honor.

Test of Sincerity:

Political Open: Target another player's Personality. His controller may have him commit seppuku; if he chose this, he gains 4 Honor. If he did not choose this, dishonor the Personality, and his controller loses 2 Honor; if he is now below his starting Family Honor, he may ignore Personalities' Honor Requirements until the game ends.

Definition of Seppuku: Reaction: Any number of times per turn, before you lose Honor from an action that targeted or was performed by one of your Courtier or Samurai Personalities: He commits seppuku. If the seppuku destroyed him, reduce the Honor loss to one.

If you will search the meaning, then seppuku from Test of Sincerity can be triggered if looked at it that way. But since it is a "seppuku" induced card-effect, then I will not be able to lose 3 Honor from Exposing Secrets.

Thank you for your enlightening answers!

No. To commit seppuku thanks to Test of Sincerity (in order to gain 4 Honor) does not involve the Reaction that you quoted from the rulebook. Per the glossary, here is the definition of seppuku: If an effect directs a Personality to commit seppuku, apply the following effects: “Rehonor the Personality, then destroy him; these effects will not be negated.”

The rulebook gives a Reaction to each player that enables him to have one of his Courtier or Samurai Personality commit seppuku under special circumstances but there are other ways in the game, such as Test of Sincerity.
