Unshakable Resolve

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 September 2009 to 24 September 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I had a question about Unshakable Reslove.

Open:Rehonor your target dishonorable Personality. While he is opposed this turn, he has a Force bonus equial to his personnel honor. If his personnel honor is 4 or greater, gain 1 honor.

My question is does the Rehonor your target dishonorale personality have to be meet for the the remaining affects to occur.

Unshakable Resolve: does the Rehonor your target dishonorale personality have to be meet for the the remaining affects to occur.

This is a variation of "Is an action legal if an effect can't happen?"

You still have to target your own dishonorable personality, right? You can't just target an honorable personality and give them a force bonus (and gain honor if they are PH 4 or more), right?

This action has one required target: your dishonourable Personality. If you have no dishonourable Personalities, you may not announce the action.

However, as Zen stated in answer to your original question, there is no requirement that the Personality can be rehonoured: if the Personality's rehonouring is negated by any effect (for example Utter Defeat, from Samurai Edition), the remaining effects will resolve. At least, they will try to resolve, since if the Personality is dishonoured his personal honour is 0, so his force bonus when opposed will be 0f and you won't gain any honour from Unshakable Resolve.

Regarding this

I agree with Zen's answer, but most often that kind of questions usually mean "can I do this if I don't control a dishonored personality?". Rehonoring can fail, and the rest of the effects will happen, but the dishonorable personality is a mandatory target, so Unshakable Resolve can't be played if you don't control a dishonored personality in the first place.

Just to clarify things for the original poster

See also Alex's post above, which made the same point.

The FAQ entry does specifically say mandatory targeting has to happen.
