Keywords from abilities

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 August 2009 to 27 August 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

You are in a battle and target the opponent's Personalities (one of which has the Political key word) with:

Unpredictable Strategy Text Battle: Target a unit, and another unit controlled by the same player at any other location. Switch the two units' locations. Straighten them if they moved.

Unpredictable is now a political action correct?

How about I then play:

Enough Talk Iaijutsu Reaction: Before the resolution of a Political action performed by a Personality, target your unbowed Samurai: He challenges the other Personality. Destroy the duel's loser. If your Samurai wins the duel, the Political action's effects do not happen.

Is this a legal combo? Who do I have to kill...one, both?

Incorrect. Abilities do not gain keywords from cards they target (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#Abilities).

Thus rendering the remaining questions moot.

"An ability also has any keywords that are on its card. Example: An ability on a Ninja card is a Ninja ability.

EXCEPTION: Keywords that a card only has from one of its abilities are not given to other abilities on the card. Example: A Ninja ability on a card does not by itself give Ninja to any other abilities on that card."

I have a question about the exception...

Shosuro Takuma is a Ninja with an Open action...if the Open action a Ninja action even though it does not begin: "Ninja Open"?

Yes, Takuma's action is a Ninja action, because of the text you quoted above the exception.

The exception only applies to a very rare instance where a card will have two or more abilities, and one will have a keyword the other lacks. For example, Subtle Corruption from Glory of the Empire. Its first ability is "Limited:", but its second ability is "Fear Battle:". Therefore, its Limited action is NOT a "Fear" action. However, if "Fear" appeared on the keyword line, rather than butted up against just one of the abilities, then they would BOTH be "Fear" actions.

Bayushi Paneki xp 5 has a Political Battle. Does this mean that Bayushi Paneki xp 5 also has the Political keyword?

A player, 26 August 2009

Yes, Bayushi Paneki (Experienced 5) has the Political keyword because of his Political ability, per Card features, Abilities: "A card has any keywords of its abilities."

Per: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=78713 , when Bayushi Paneki using tactician, is the use a political battle action?

thanks in advance,

No. An action's keywords do not depend on which cards are performing it. When an Earth Shugenja performs an action on a Water Spell, this is a Water action. When a Political Personality performs a Tactical action, this action does not become Political.
